there are plenty of engines that are better than the Hudson hornet engine if you compare horsepower to weight or displacement , but the fact that this engine was designed and made was made in the late forties and early fifties, and is still a relevant motor in a sense that with a few modifications can be competative when compared with modern engines today is quite impressive. also the reliability! WOW!

I love my 93 Ford F-150 short bed with its fuel injected 300 inline six and 5 speed manual. It's not as quick as a V8, but it's got torque that will pull some of the largest trailers. Around 4K RPM, with the stock camshaft, its responsive as hell. The truck's a blast to drive and the single Flowmaster exhaust gives it a great sound reminiscent of a sixties era sports car.

The Hudson performed so well in racing not only to it's drivetrain, but the construction of the chassis. It's center of gravity was incredibly low, so it could outmaneuver the competition if it couldn't overpower it. A business-styled automobile with performance construction. Ahead of it's time.

Indeed, the Hudson Hornet 308 rated at 170 hp with "twin H-Power" was the hot car of the early 50's. Very popular on the track, Hudson sold speed parts to the public, just like Direct Connection/Mopar did decades later.

The Hudson Hornet was first introduced in 1951. Consequently, the mighty Hudson 308 six cylinder engine was exclusively produced for the Hornets from 1951 to 1956. In 1957, the last year of the Hudson, only an American Motors (AMC) eight cylinder engine was available for the Hornet.

Our engine was a GMC 272 Cu In. bored to 301. trick heads and cam. single 4 bbl carb. Yep, held class records. 6CYL printed in foot high letters both sides of the '57 chevy hood. Truck engine torque, perfect for those short tracks. Mods allowed it to wind up to well over 6,000 rpm. sounded like nothing else on the track. Old man who owned a chain of Chevron gas stations built the engine and car for his son to race. I was fortunate to be on the pit crew and drive as a substitute and later a rookie. Folks who attended El Cajon raceway in 1968 might know this car as a Chevron Blue and White number 301.

My engine builder specialized in Ford flat head V-8's but also restored all manner of antique engines...I worked for him for a time and was lucky enough to work on a Hudson six.
It was one of the most impressive flat head engines I've ever seen....it had individual ports for each valve (No siamesed ports) and were large and square. The block was also relieved from the port area and very smooth flowing. The great engine wasn't the only reason Hudson's were a success...they were very light and stiff and had a low center of gravity. And with the big six they made a lot of low end torque, so came out of the turns ahead of the new over head valve V-8's of the day.

Agree Jean-Charles. Your hero WO also came up with the 6-clyinder Bentley 8 litre of 1930 and 1931 (and the valve gear of the pre-1931 Bentley 6-cylinder cars was interesting). And WO came up with the nice refined LG6 & MR45 Lagondas (forget the V12's!) of the 1930's - one of which won LeMans in 1935. I quite like the 1930 Bentley Team Car 6½ litre engines, and the cars they were fitted to! In the 1930's there were lots of big six-cylinder engines! Cheers.

You've mentioned Invicta, but for more British cars only, how about the Riley MPH, an SS100, AC 16/80, Railton Light Sports Tourer, Frazer-Nash TT Rep, Talbot 105...? French 1930 sports cars? That's another story! Cheers.

A late 20's Vauxhall 30-90 Clinton Saloon or a early 20's Sunbeam. Speaking of SS100, I've got a MKV with the same 3.5l engine... I can only imagine what it can do with 700 less kilos to move about and nothing separating the top of your head from the skies above.
Judging by your username, you're more into pre-WW1 sports cars.
By the way I'm french, and as for the Talbots, I prefer the cars the french division came up with, even before Anthony Lago's got involved into it. Like a nice 11Six, M67, or a big Pacific (like the Coach by Pelletier).

Those engines are small. Between 1905 and 1925 the leading luxury cars had six cylinder engines that were real monsters. For example, the Pierce Arrow 66, 825 cu in or 13.5 liters. McFarlan Twin Valve Six, 572 cu in 9.37 liters. Oldsmobile Limited, 707 cu in 11.6 liters. From Europe there was the Renault 40CV with its 557 cu in 9.1 liter engine and the Napier, who made the first six cylinder car, made an 80HP racing model with a 920 cu in 15 liter engine.

Just to add some perspective to this , the Aussie Chrysler Valiant 265 cid in line 6 cylinder RT e-49 Charger held the title as the quickest accelerating PRODUCTION 6 cylinder in the world for nigh on 15 yrs, it was only with the advent of turbo charging that another in line ( the Holden Calais Brock Director Special with a turbo Nissan RBDet motor) 6 was able to beat it's 1/4 mile times. The triple dual throat webers hanging off the 265 gave it a howl that would send tingles up the spines of most V8 drivers as well, they knew how quick these bloody things were and most sane V8 steerers let them sprint away at the lights without trying to race them as they knew the embarrassment of getting flogged by a mere 6 pot would be hard to swallow.
So far as bragging rights go, the 265 Aussie Hemi 6 handed every other in line 6 it's ass in spades, nothing held a candle to it as far as potency.

In my late '50s Auto Shop Class I was taught that all inline 6's, regardless of manufacturer, have the same firing order- 1-5-3-6-2-4, and that that was not true for any other engine type!

I agree with the one comment the best engine I've ever built for straight 6 was the G MC 302 2 barrel carb 3in exhaust 12-inch clutch what are credible smooth-running Beast and it did have a great oiling system tremendous low-end torque I put it in a flatbed truck for a guy it was a sweet running machine

Great video man! However, you forgot to mention some engines like the Chevy 4.1L that was used in the Brazilian Opala in the 80s, and later on in the 90s Chevy introduced the 4.3L V6 vortec, which here in Brazil powered both the pickup truck s10 and the Blazer (the SUVs' father lol)
