Great tip on using grease under the valve cover! Instead of some fancy oil in the air filter, I use fogging oil. I need fogging oil to put the generator away, so by using it in the air filter I have one less product to keep on the shelf.
Wow. I hope you see this review. This is the best video on this generator. I just bought one right after Christmas in dec 2021. I live in a cabin in the winter and I need to to charge my solar barrel banks, run heating stoves, charge many things. I had no idea how to maintain a generator. Literally I learned so much today. I just had a feeling I needed to change oil 6 weeks later. I'm glad I watched this. I bought a spare bottle of oil but it's 12 Oz. It takes 8oz. I had no idea how to measure it or what to use to put the oil in it. It comes with one use cardboard crappy funnel. Generator is not cheap. I need to use it all winter and sometimes during summers for camping. I love lots of solar but summer but some days it's cloudy and I will run out of power. This video is amazing on maintaining this generator. Thank you so much. Is there any change you could make a step by step video how go install hour counter please? I already ordered every part on Amazon just now. Hour counter is very useful. This is my first generator ever, I want to maintain it. I cant afford a new one. Thank you for an excellent video. I have this robi generator. 2300 w starting, 1800w running. The exact same one I just got from home depot
Thank you for the great reviews, it made my decision making a lot easier! I bought a Craftsman !2500 it came with a broken spark plug and a broken cap on the spark plug wire, "shattered" so I brought it back and because you said these small I generators are made by Ducar I ordered the Westinghouse IGen 2500 (I liked the control panel) it came with a broken spark plug and a "Defect" label on the box, I brought it back to Lowes and they gave me my money back, both of these generators were $599.99, two weeks later I was shopping at Lowes and they had the Westinghouse generator I had returned with a price tag of $299 on it and bought it. I replace the spark plug and the second pull it started, It runs great, I would not have bought the Westinghouse generator if it wasn't for you and I got an amazing deal!!!! From what I can see is the defect was the broken spark plug. Thanks again!!
Just had a Westinghouse iGen2200 delivered today. First order is to toss the Torch plug if it has one and replace it with an NGK. Then after the break in run, dump the factory oil and refill with Rotella T5 or T6. Using a magnetic dipstick is a good one too.
@MR Garage (Random DIY & Projects) First off let me say thank you Mr Garage for all the things you do for everyone on this channel!... So far I followed every single step and I purchased all the supplies via your links in the description... But now I'm stuck... P1. When I'm using the 0.10mm feeler gauge on the tappet of the two valve I don't think there's clearance because they won't fit unless you're actually lifting up the valves tap it each time? I even tried to push a little bit and started to bend the feeler gauge. P2. I was told by a friend to add one tablespoon of Sea Foam Motor Treatment into the spark plug socket hole then install the new Denso Iridium spark plug and then the dialectric grease in the boot, next to add two tablespoons into the oil fill hole before adding my final oil after burn in regiment. You're Feedback is most appreciated and welcomed.
Hello! On your questions: P1 If the feeler gauge will not insert, means clearance is a bit too tight. Time to back off the adjuster a tad and re-check. P2 The seafoam treatment will not hurt so just depends on the hours on the gen if needed. Also, if put in the oil, you need to change the oil shortly after application is my understanding (not a seafoam expert)
Good News... I've completed all the steps you recommended and I did my burn in today just as you instructed... but there was just one difference... I didn't have any startup sputters as It ran extremely smooth from the first pull! 🤪 1Q: what is the auto idle button? Any chance you could explain what that means and is for like when would I use that and for what reason? Thanks Mr Garage for all your help and care and feedback! 🙌🤗😉
Very nice - you have a great gen ! Auto idle lets the generator idle down quiet when no load is present. Once a load presents itself, the generator will ramp up in RPM. The only time you should turn this off is during startup.
Thank you. Waiting on my Westinghouse iGen 2500 I just ordered for $399 and after seeing this I ordered the magnetic dipstick, fluid extractor, and hour meter hoping to extend the life of this generator for as long as possible. Price can’t be beat at Sam’s Club for the next 2 days on this one.
Good information for a beginner like myself. (Everybody does not have technology savvy like some critics I see in the comments. ) Clear information. Good detail. Excellent visual on applications. I have two of the Pulsar G2319Ns and lent them to a friend and specifically showed him how to drain bowl once done, he did not have stabilizer in the fuel nor did he drain the bowl before bringing them back and putting them away, shame on me for not checking, as you might imagine next time I go to use they won’t start because gas has turned into turpentine. These carburetors are a little different than others if worked with, I cleaned the bowls unplugged the little jet (I guess that’s what is but its on the side of the pick up tube) thoroughly cleaned out all orifices and reassembled. They start and run but I am getting surging now. What did I miss. TIA BTW your video is very good and I did order several of the upgraded options for both of mine.
@Jeff Pitt Low idle circuit is still partially clogged in the carb. You've got 3 options from easiest to expensive. Buy a 4 oz. bottle of "Mechanic in a Bottle". Remove all the gas in tank and pour in the MIAB. With the spark plug cable OFF (don't start it) pull the starter rope 15-20 times to get it down into the carb. Leave it for a few days to a week. Pour in fresh gas, reconnect plug wire and see if it'll run right now. 2nd option is to reclean the carb by using a torch tip cleaner, poking into all the orifices. 3rd option is to replace the carb. Good luck.
Instead of fuel stabilizer I use truefuel and run it through the system before I store it. During the season I will run staybil 360 for its upper cylinder lubricant and cleaning properties. But for storage if I want to leave any fuel in it without having to completely drain my system I trust the synthetic fuels such as VP SEF and trufuel
Your list includes the Yamaha EF2000is: however, the name embossed on the engine is "Yamaha"… Is that really a Yamaha-made MZ80 engine, or a Ducar-manufactured clone of the Yamaha MZ80 engine? Are they just all the same?

I moved on from this ryobi and have a Pulsar dual fuel now that ROCKS and over 3000W! Same size as these smaller units. Check out my latest video on it. Made by Dinking instead of Ducar.
Echo EGI-2300 is another one. Has pretty much the same app as the Ryobi as well, except the colors and fonts are different. I wonder if you could connect to the Echo with the Ryobi app or the other way around.
I have a Champion & in about 2 hours of running I'm on my 3rd batch of oil,... Went about 5 minutes on the original oil, dumped it then about 30 minutes on the 2nd oil & dumped it,... The 3rd go of oil was some good stuff. After I cleaned the air filter I drowned it in WD40 & squeezed out the excess,... WD 40 is what I had ;)
Thanks for all the useful information in your video it was very helpful with items that I did not think about. All have been ordered along with my inverter generator.
Yep, a little bit of maintenance goes quite a long ways. Just ordered a fluid extractor and a set of feeler gauges; not sure where they wondered off to. I know that it is almost time to check and set the valve clearance. Also, I found that if I use non-ethanol gas and Sta-Bil gives me less headaches on equipment that I only use occasionally. I drain the carburetor when possible, unfortunately some small engine fuel system layout now days make it difficult to do that.
I agree 100% the carb in these ducar generators has a side jet, not bottom feed. So unless you use the bowl drain screw, cannot run the bowl out of gas if you wanted to!
Thank you. I have been reading, looking, and niticed how all these Chinese models look alike. Similar case desin. Then I noticed how the engines all looked the same. I want something that has high quality control and a reputation for lasting a long time. I think a Honda might be the ticket. Thank you for sharing this information.
You are a master really impressed by how you made it easy!! However my only problem is the valve clearance I don’t even know how to strip all plastics off the generator. I seen that this video was posted out of Phoenix, AZ. I’m from Phoenix as well, is that a service you provide? Really interested. God bless you!!
Very appreciated. It is pretty easy - just all Phillips screws to take the side cover off and such. Unfortunately, I do not have time at all for service work
You can do a CR5HIX which will work excellent. Adds a resistor which does not hurt anything / may slightly reduce electrical noise overall. You may need to order a terminal nut for the end as they usually ship threaded only.
MR G thank you for this whole video and a special special thank you for the valve clearance I could not find this info anywhere I never thought about looking up the Westinghouse manual I could not find a video on your channel regarding adjusting the governor or away to adjust the idle speed and is there a way to change the ignition timing on this generator
GREAT video! Thank you very much! I learned a lot. I understand Hyundai generators do not use Ducar engines. Am I right? Rather their small 2000W gen uses a Rongfa engine? That one generator appears terrible… Awful assembly and poor quality components.
Comes down to the few small feature option differences and available warranty from a local store. For me, Ryobi, Wen, Pulsar and Predator would be my top picks. Ryobi even has an electric start small frame inverter now that uses their 18v batteries. Very cool generator.
Hi there, how many cc are these engines? I have a Westinghouse igen 2800 and the manual says 79cc. I go look at the generac gp2500i and it say 98cc. They both look identical.
Looking at picking up a Ryobi 2300 this weekend. Do you know if the spark plug type has changed. I was reading the manual from HD website and now shows NGK BPR7HS or equivalent which appears to be a 7 heat range spark plug and not 6? Also looking at the IWF22 from denso to replace it with if it has changed, iwf20 if not, but the manual also says a .6-.7 mm gap and the denso is .8? Would that still be ok or would need to be bent in slightly? Thanks in advance and for the awesome videos
When going to iridium, no need to adjust the gap. The spark kernel will be well focused. Error on the colder side and check the plug after a long hard run. Environment, altitude, fuel ratio... all play a part.
I would be surprised if it used a pump but I have not opened one up personally. Looking through the manual (excellent manual! I can praise westinghouse here!) it looks gravity fed. No reference to a pump and the layout on page 21 makes me confident it is gravity fed. Just a fuel filter off the tank.
For break in on a dual fuel... ( if someone planned to use mostly propane)....is it better to break in on gas or no big difference to break in on propane?
Thank you for this video. I was looking for something like this. I'm going to buy all this stuff you're recommending. I have two pulsar 1800 watt generators. One of them works like a charm. No issues. Now. The other one I gave to my father-in-law. He rarely used it and kept it outside covered with a bucket. I'm starting to use it to give the other one a break but I noticed it's not running even, or at a consistent RPM? I guess it kind of like gets high and then low and then high and then low constantly. Any thoughts on what I should look at? Troubleshooting thanks again man
Likely just a carb issue. Get rid of the gas in the tank safely, drain the carb bowl best you can and take the carb apart. Will need a thorough cleaning and you should be good to go!
@@MR_Garage I was hoping you would not say that. Lol. Got to learn about carbs now. Thanks for your quick reply. And thanks for all the great information you give out on your videos. Best wishes
Great upgrade and maintenance tips. My Ryobi 2300 takes about 6 pulls on choke to start. Is that standard for you? I'm hoping to get it dialed in to just 2 to 3 pulls at most. Any tips?
@@MR_Garage Update to this. Yes I did but the fix was to tighten up the choke. The play prevented it from fully closing. New plug came afterwards. Thanks for the great video!
"YAMAHA" is stamped on the engine… I would assume this is the original Yamaha MZ80 engine! Now: is THAT one also made in China? By Ducar? THE PLOT THICKENS!!!
I hate the carburator bowl fuel drain (clear tube) location as it's bent in it's current factory position... Can I just loosen the carb bowl nut and change the position to where I want it to be without having to remove the whole carb and then once I have it in the perfect location just tighten the bowl nut back to snug? Or... Causing problems by doing this process?
You can, just a 10mm nut on the bottom. Can rotate it a little. The o-ring is annoying so do not drop the bowl all the way. Just enough to turn it a little.
@@MR_Garage I did just that 👍... Everything looks new with zero residue, reassembled = no start. I check for spark = good = no start I drained fuel and replaced with fresh = no start Replaced sparkplug with new NGK BPR7HS = no start. I checked carb bowl is getting fresh fuel = no start. I'm lost 😔
@@MR_Garage Yes, used Redmax JASO-FD 4 cycle oil 10w-30 I ran it last summer for 40 minutes to power my shop radio 1200 watts... Then I stored it, I did not drain the fuel because I was using zero ethanol Tru 4 fuel, I replaced the fuel with same brand and type and still no start.
@@MR_Garage UPDATE: Took the 3 year old Gen to Home Depot Tool Rental Service and they are going to swap it out for new in the box. I also used your links to get all maintenance upgrades from Amazon, should all be here in 6 days. Watched your awesome tear down video, just wished you made a how to remove the shroud/cover properly video. I'm sure it's simple, it's just that I'm a visual learner 🤪👌
What do you recommend to store a Ryobi generator when you know you will be using every 4-6 months. Do you drain the gas and add oil to the spark plug. That is what I read in owners manual.
If I store any gas engine that long, I drain the bowl. If you want to go expert level, use a syringe with proper sized tube to fit the bowl drain. Once drained, inject ATF fluid back into the carb. Pretty much fill it and close the drain. When ready to use, drain the bowl again and fire it up. Will smoke a bit and take a little longer to start first try but the carb will always be 100% ready to go.
For the air filter on my preditor gennies. After cleaning/drying I use a a spritz or 2(3) of the K&N air filter oil. Don't know if it's right or wrong. But that is what I use.
Hey Mr Garage! I have a question, I have a 2300watt Pulsar Generator. I’ve had it for about a year and have meticulously maintained its. It’s at 433 hours. I’m having an issue with it revving up and down. I took it apart and cleaned the fuel jet but is still doing the same thing. Any help would be great appreciated, thank you!
Remove the spark arrestor and see if it is doing the same thing? Possibly clogged? Also, valve clearance check would be due by that point. Doubt it has to do with the bouncing idle but it would be due.
@@MR_Garage thanks for responding! I checked, cleaned and took off the spark arrestor just now. It didn’t seem to do anything for the revving up and down. I’m kind of stumped, do you think it may be the little red inline fuel filter? It was flowing pretty good when I had removed the gas line from the carb. Do you think the carb needs cleaning??
@Anthony Marquez Low idle circuit is still partially clogged in the carb. The Chines stuff is much better than it was 20 years ago,... The finish on the castings of the plastic & alloy is clean. I think we tend to treat cheap stuff like cheap stuff but if we treat our cheap Chinese generator like we paid 3 times as much for a Honda then we would be better off.
just bought a 4300 A-ipower gen that has a A5RTC plug, can not find a Denso cross but it crosses to a champion Z9Y with then crosses to a Denso IUF22 that is a different heat range would that be safe ?
In all small engines, I use a 15w40 (unless in a cold climate, I use a 5w40). I use rotella T6 in pretty much everything I own. But I am not caught up in brands. Maintaining equipment on-time trumps whatever brand is on the bottle.
@@MR_Garage I like a good diesel oil, I just ran my wen 2000 for 6 days straight, only turned it off to change the oil at about 60 hours. I use Amsoil HDD 5W30, it’s a heavy 30 weight. Pretty stout oil., I changed it again on the fifth day. Between changes maybe used an ounce. My unit has about 200 hours on it, i’m assuming it’s got the crappy torch plug, I will be yanking that thing soon. I kept thinking while it was running non stop I hope that crappy plug stays together.
Thanks for the info, I am ordering the Pulsar. I will replace with the mentioned plug as soon as I find out the heat range. Could not find that info in Amazon.
Never encountered a document stating maximum hours. And actual hours all come down to maintenance, load and such. Well taken care of machines last a very long time.
No issues. Iridium simply describes the center electrode material and general shape of the electrode (always a fine wire). What matters is the heat range and proper fitment of the plug. The center electrode material and shape simply changes the shape / focus of the flame kernel. The material has to be tough with a high melting point which is why iridium was the choice. Soft / lower melting point materials like platinum or gold palladium just wear out fast. iridium / fine wire allows for excellent flame propagation across the gap and even wide gaps under boost (for guys that tune only in high performance engines). But in small engines, this means the focused energy will nearly always fire even when wet fouled or oil fouled. This, and they last seemingly forever. This is why iridium plugs / fine wire plugs are simply a better choice over gimmicks and why nearly every automotive manufacturer on the planet has gone to them. There is no magic, or voodoo here. Just science and tech. Your engine will not run hotter, cooler or do anything other than run as well as it can and start easy. I know way to much about spark plugs to the point it is embarrassing sometimes (past life work) - carry on!
@@MR_Garage I have 2 ATVs that need spark plugs. Could I use Iridium in them to? Do you happen to have a conversion chart that could easily tell me what the DPR7EA-9 and D8EA would be in Iridium?
After 40 hours of use there is a problem, the IGEN 2500 became hard to start, I filled it with gas, checked the oil, and it would not start, there is a handy float bowl drain and I opened it and air came out once all of the air was bled out the generator started fine then after an hour it started sputtering and I found the gas cap was not venting. What could have caused the original hard to start problem with the air in the float bowl? I have had this generator for 5 months and only used non ethanol 91 octane gasoline with Stable in it.
Same here with my Westinghouse igen 2500. Started with one pull until I drained the carb bowl. I eventually did get it running again and starting with a single pull I but have not used it for an extended period of time after that so hopefully it keeps running. Maybe there is a trick to draining the carb that I missed.
what about those champion 2000w generators? are they using the same ducar internals? they kinda look the same. ruclips.net/video/JPWT9iFVz9Y/видео.html

After I cleaned the air filter I drowned it in WD40 & squeezed out the excess,... WD 40 is what I had ;)
WD is fine - My gramps used the same on foam filters!
Honda makes great generators are a very high premium. Treat one of these little guys right and they do last.
Add Jegs 2300i to the list of clones. I just bought two of them for $380 each including shipping.
Question: should the fuel filter be replaced as well?
and if so could you give a link to the one you recommend.
Thanks 🤗
Great video noticed the split cases in the background
You are a master really impressed by how you made it easy!!
However my only problem is the valve clearance I don’t even know how to strip all plastics off the generator.
I seen that this video was posted out of Phoenix, AZ.
I’m from Phoenix as well, is that a service you provide?
Really interested.
God bless you!!
Very appreciated. It is pretty easy - just all Phillips screws to take the side cover off and such. Unfortunately, I do not have time at all for service work
You can add the Pulsar G2319N and Pulsar PG2300iS generators to the list of Ducar engine generators.
is there a iridium equivalent for A5RTC,...NGK 6535, CR5HSB ,...CHAMPION ZY9 COULDNT FIND,JUST REGULAR NGK ETC
You can do a CR5HIX which will work excellent. Adds a resistor which does not hurt anything / may slightly reduce electrical noise overall. You may need to order a terminal nut for the end as they usually ship threaded only.
MR G thank you for this whole video and a special special thank you for the valve clearance I could not find this info anywhere I never thought about looking up the Westinghouse manual
I could not find a video on your channel regarding adjusting the governor or away to adjust the idle speed and is there a way to change the ignition timing on this generator
Hello man, nice videos! Do you recommend full synthetic 10w30 for a ryobi 2300 staying at Venezuela the climate rounds by 20 to 30 degrees on hot days
That would be perfectly fine oil weight wise.
@@MR_Garage many thanks men
The big "D" on the air filter is a dead giveaway 😂
GREAT video! Thank you very much! I learned a lot.
I understand Hyundai generators do not use Ducar engines. Am I right? Rather their small 2000W gen uses a Rongfa engine?
That one generator appears terrible… Awful assembly and poor quality components.
How do you splash lubricate overhead valves??
Careful if you change oil when it’s hit, that magnetic dipstick gets extremely hot.
Any tips on where to find parts or carp rebuild kits?
I love the video, of all the China generators being the same can u tell me what brand of them you would suggest?
Comes down to the few small feature option differences and available warranty from a local store. For me, Ryobi, Wen, Pulsar and Predator would be my top picks. Ryobi even has an electric start small frame inverter now that uses their 18v batteries. Very cool generator.
@@MR_Garage Thanks for the info!!
Great video. Thank you.
Thanks for the reply! Got the generator and checked the spark plug and it’s still the torch 6 so will be going with the denso iwf20!
Can you tell me for Igen 2800 inverter generator does it have fuel pump or is the carburetor gravidity fed
?
I would be surprised if it used a pump but I have not opened one up personally. Looking through the manual (excellent manual! I can praise westinghouse here!) it looks gravity fed. No reference to a pump and the layout on page 21 makes me confident it is gravity fed. Just a fuel filter off the tank.
Great video and thank you. Great job walking through the details.
For break in on a dual fuel... ( if someone planned to use mostly propane)....is it better to break in on gas or no big difference to break in on propane?
Does not make a difference really in my experience. Propane runs cleaner and a bit hotter, that's about it.
amazing video
just didn't say what kind oil you use
I use rotella T6 15w40 in my generators.
Any tips?
Did you get rid of the junk factory plug yet?
@@MR_Garage Update to this. Yes I did but the fix was to tighten up the choke. The play prevented it from fully closing. New plug came afterwards. Thanks for the great video!
Please add the Yamaha EF2200IS as well to your list. That generator costs nearly as much as the Honda EU2200I yet has the Chinese engine in it.
"YAMAHA" is stamped on the engine… I would assume this is the original Yamaha MZ80 engine! Now: is THAT one also made in China? By Ducar? THE PLOT THICKENS!!!
@MR Garage I found this useful, thank you! Since this video has been uploaded NGK has made an Iridium plug NGK BPR7HIX. NGK Part# 7067
pulsar g2319 i have been using them for a while but when the pull starter rope breaks how do i fix it cant even get the side cover off
Great video bud! Subscribed! Any recommendations on good CM6RA plugs? Can’t find iridium variant of those.
Not finding a valid crossover on that one! What plug is that in? Lawnmower or weedeater... or?
@@MR_Garage it’s actually for a small Sportsman 1000 inverter generator.
@@MR_Garage
I did just that 👍...
Everything looks new with zero residue, reassembled = no start.
I check for spark = good = no start
I drained fuel and replaced with fresh = no start
Replaced sparkplug with new NGK BPR7HS = no start.
I checked carb bowl is getting fresh fuel = no start.
I'm lost 😔
New generator to you that has never run or brand new? Oil full?
@@MR_Garage
Yes, used Redmax JASO-FD 4 cycle oil 10w-30
I ran it last summer for 40 minutes to power my shop radio 1200 watts...
Then I stored it, I did not drain the fuel because I was using zero ethanol Tru 4 fuel, I replaced the fuel with same brand and type and still no start.
@@MR_Garage
UPDATE: Took the 3 year old Gen to Home Depot Tool Rental Service and they are going to swap it out for new in the box.
Thanks for the helpful info.
Awesome teacher !!!
Really good advice. Thanks!
Lol the no pun intended had me 😂😂
For the air filter on my preditor gennies. After cleaning/drying I use a a spritz or 2(3) of the K&N air filter oil. Don't know if it's right or wrong. But that is what I use.
That will do just fine!
@@MR_Garage also I did check the valve clearance at 336 hours. It was at .06 and .08
@Anthony Marquez Low idle circuit is still partially clogged in the carb. Good luck.
Hey Nicole, the IUF22 is correct. The A5RTC is a 7 heat range in NGK and a 22 in Denso.
Mines at about 339 hours and I just checked intake and exhaust. Intake is at .06 and exhaust is at .08
So it was right on the tight spec but still in spec. Good to know! Good time for a reset so they do not get too tight.
What brand of oil? What weight? how often do you change?
When should I add oil to my new Honda gen? They come with enough oil new right. Sure smell weird running
Kiddn
I hoped so lol They do not ship with oil :)
What about like 4 or 4500 size ?
what plug do i get for a ryobi 2200??
Thanks for the info, I am ordering the Pulsar. I will replace with the mentioned plug as soon as I find out the heat range. Could not find that info in Amazon.
How many hours you figure the lifespan of these gensets is if maintained?
I would expect a few thousand. I see some of the predator generator guys passing 3000 and more
Mine's got about 4,000 something hours on it so far I got to Ryobi 2300 w
I’m a bit confused selecting an iridium NGK spark plug for my (Ducar) Pulsar PG2000iSN generator .. can you help?
I can, what is the stock plug number you have now?
What the maximum hrs expected. From this series of engines.
Never encountered a document stating maximum hours. And actual hours all come down to maintenance, load and such. Well taken care of machines last a very long time.
Any issues with iridium plugs for my Ryobi? I want to replace it but I’m nervous as no other videos or websites says iridium is safe for the genny
@@MR_Garage Best answer! Thanks so much!
Forgot to change the oil on time😭 wasn’t making any noise but cut out 1 time then kept running next time I went to use it it wouldn’t start

what about those champion 2000w generators? are they using the same ducar internals? they kinda look the same.
