    This isn't just similar to what I'm about to do to my garage, it's dead on - right down to the shiplap "sheathing," cement board on bottom and the drywall on top. I'm just removing the whole external wall, putting up zip sheathing, replacing any rotten studs, and installing new Windows. Thanks for the video. I actually love how you just own your mistakes and show how you deal with them. That gives me the confidence I need bc I'm sure to make plenty of my own. Thanks, and subscribed!

    Wow, I've been thinking of doing exactly this, changing out one of those stupid large windows that are essentially in the shower for a higher longer one that does not get water on it all the time (so stupid). However, your videos shows how much work it would really be, having to rip open the entire exterior wall like that would be a massive job and be very expensive on top.

    Hi Shannon, greetings from Nova Scotia! I’m replacing a couple of older vinyl slider windows with bigger ones. Older house with vinyl siding over rigid insulation over I assume tar paper. Haven’t started yet. After changing the framing and rough opening, can I incorporate tyvek with the tar paper as a barrier? I want to install window with nail fin after rigid is installed. If self adhesive membrane is installed on sill and around opening over rigid, what do I do with the tyvek around opening? Thanks

    I built a shed with your how to build a shed video.
    10ft by 20 feet with a frame roof.
    Thanks for that video for that.
    My next project is to cut a hole in back of my house to add a garge door. So I can drive into my back yard.
    I only have 3 feet on each side of the house. So I can’t drive around.
    This seems to be the same process as I wannna do. But I have to shore up the roof to make sure it doesn’t sag while I install the new header.
    Any chance u will do a video on how to shore a ceiling or roof?

    • @HouseImprovements

    Looking over the earlier posts, I am in total agreement. Great quality and content. Thankfully no background music. Shooting and prep for these videos take a lot of time and thought. Addressed the support consideration and wiring too. Have you ever called an engineer about support or have you just used experience as basis?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  5 лет назад

      In this case its experience . Not really much load over this sized opening with this roof. The double top plate will support that long enough to do the job. As the opening gets wider or you get more load above it you then need to use some temp. support for the ceiling .

    Not bad mate, but you could throw a block of 4x2 into that gap on the right hand side of the header and drive a wooden wedge to bring it over (suggestion) but great vids, and keep them coming. Cheers from Australia.

    Hey there, great video!! Just wondering how you secured the hardy backer to the new framing or is that even important? Assuming that there is currently tile on the other side that you can't screw or nail through. Thanks!

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  2 года назад +1

      In this case I did not fasten it to the studs at all because my plan was to gut the bathroom in the coming year to re do it. However if I was not then I would have made a few small circular dime sized cuts in the poly vapour barrier allong the new stud locations so that I could use a construction adhesive to bond the new framing to the back side.

  • @garycummings4885
    @garycummings4885 3 года назад +2

    Can you follow the same process from the inside without taking off all the siding?

  • @Maxid1
    @Maxid1 5 лет назад +3

    I didn't see that you supported the ceiling. I've done interior and exterior walls and I don't think it's ever gone that smoothly. I hate it when I find out a non load bearing timber turns into a load bearing because of some past error or modification. I pulled out a built in flue frame once and found it wasn't built between the joists but to the flue framing (the joist was nailed to the flue framing and didn't go all the way to the load bearing wall). Paying attention to the recip saw binding saved me on that one. Sheetrock was harmed in the repair of that little mess.

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  5 лет назад

      In this case it is a supporting wall, but because the rafter weight is really all that is supported and the width of opening so short the double top plate was enough to temp. support what we needed while removing old framing.

    It seemed like the studs were loose in the opening. Are they actually supporting any weight from above? You also don't want them to be so long that they push the top plate up because they have to be wedged in. It's those little details I'm never sure about. Should the new studs be an 1/8th or 1/4 more ? Also if the wood is green which most new wood is it will shrink over time so should that be takien into account?

    excellent example of how to perform some safe demolition causing as little damage as possible. The popularity of those "home renovation shows" where the DIY'ers go mental using a 20lb sledge and flip flops.... Yes it is entertainment folks but should come with a disclaimer of "don't try this at home..."
