Having a seizure. Talk calm, soft, pet. & don’t hold or restrict movement. When it passes still keep calm & quiet. Could take up to an hour to recover completely. May also be very thirsty, or not thirsty or hungry for many hours & usually wants to sleep after.

Dogs can still hear and understand you while they are having a seizure, and it is good to talk to them and provide comfort while it’s happening.
Edit: There are different types of dog seizures and not all are unconscious during the episode. While the brain is misfiring motor function, it does not always impair sensory perception. In fact, it has been shown in studies that comforting your dog during seizures can decrease the length they occur. This information was confirmed by my vet. 🙂

No they can't. Best to stay quiet and calm and dont touch them. Taking and touching will stimulate their nerves and can make the seizure longer. Even after it's over they are often confused and may bite if you pet them. Get a blanket for a pillow and one for any bowel movements it's all you can do.

I found figuring out a stressor to them and solving it before it can trigger Tham helps a ton. So if playing to hard without a break is causing it, try to train them to understand "take a few moments to get yourself calm" then come back. I had a service dog like this and she was such a lover. If this ever happens to you, try not to panic. Often times they can still hear you and are mostly conscious still. If you assure them and comfort them with your presence. It can make the whole event a whole lot less scary for them. Also be sure to keep their head from bumping the ground. Afterwards call or take them to the vet.

In this situation, relax and wait it out. Seizure, though uncommon can randomly afflict your little fury friends. Don't restrain them, or move them. It will usually last about 30 seconds. Once they've self-stabilized, you can clean them up and take them to your nearest vet. These things happen. It's actually good he caught this in film. This is good teaching tape for fellow animal lovers. 👍

But humans can't hear during their seizures, I have epilepsy but don't hear during my grand mal seizures, which is like what the dog I happening, I don't remember them at all which is normal, I'll just be standing there then feel like I'm being electrocuted for a second then I wake up on a stretcher with people in an ambulance asking me who the president is, stuff like that is usually what happens, people say I was on the ground seizing but I have no memory of it ever, and my doctor says that's normal, because during a seizure there's not much oxygen to the brain so we don't actually know what's going on during a seizure, not conscious

For generalized seizures the person is completely unaware of what's going on, but the brain is still absorbing stimulus so when we 'come to' our brains have to reboot and it's an incredibly frustrating, stressful, and can even be scary/violent situation. To All of You Commenting about Him Recording on His Phone or Nervously saying “Hey! Hey! Hey!”…
    Just 🛑 Stop!…
    1. This is likely NOT the 1st time this has happened. The owner has likely spoken to or taken the dog to a Vet, but b/c you can’t just make the dog have a seizure on command or by the 🫰 of your fingers, there’s only so much the Vet can do w/o having witnessed the event. So, he was prob instructed to try recording the seizure the next time it happens, in order to help the Vet properly diagnose it.
    &
    2. The owner clearly cares about his dog & appears to be genuinely worried about the dog’s well-being (hence the “Hey! Hey! Hey!”). Ask any seasoned medical professional that has many emergencies under their belt & they’ll tell you that while they may be able to stay calm & collected when treating a patient, it’s completely different when it happens to a loved one.
Honestly, unless this had been going on for years, I’d be more concerned about the dog if the owner was totally unemotional & just apathetically recording the vid like… “Yeah… So, my dog did this weird shaking thing today. Idk what it is, but I guess he’s ok. It didn’t last too long & after it stopped, he only acted like he was drunk for a few min. before behaving normal’ish again. Glad I didn’t panic & waste $$$ rushing him to the vet, lol!”
Aside from all that, I for one am thankful for videos like this that can be of help to any other owner who has a dog w/ seizures bc it can help educate & poss serve as an example for the Vet. i.e. “I haven’t had a chance to record Fido having a seizure yet, but it looks exactly like this example…”

You NEVER hold back an epileptic because there is a risk of causing damage. Even less is there a need to caress him because he is not conscious, so he doesn't feel anything. The only thing is to put something soft under your head and as soon as the crisis ends, run to the vet.

My golden retriever started having seizures in 2021. After that, she would have one at least once a month. A year later, it seemed like it was once a week. In mid-December, i believe she had a stroke. Her head tilted, she couldn't walk on her own anymore. Then she passed on December 31st, at 15. The seizures are always so hard to deal with. You never get used to them. I'm just happy she can finally rest.
    Rest in Peace, baby girl.

That truly is heart-stopping. My parents used to have a miniature schnauser, who started having seizures. First time it happened, I was frantic. She was up on the couch and just seized and fell to the floor. My heart dropped, and I ran to her, but there's not much you can do but try to comfort them.

I lost my 11 year old Maltese, Jake, about a year ago. He was basically healthy with no history of seizures. It was the middle of the night and I was asleep on the sofa. I woke to the sound of him bumping the floor violently shaking. He had come to me, I’m sure, because he realized something was wrong. It scared me so bad. He wet himself and was violently shaking, head thrown back, just like this poor baby in the video.
After he seemed to calm down, I wrapped him in a blanket, picked him up and held him close to me. He actually cried (in the way dogs do) for a little while but wasn’t the same after that. I took him to my vet the next morning. He told me the seizure caused brain damage. I had to let Jake go because I could see he was suffering. And I swear, I knew he was scared, kinda in shock. I believe all dogs go to heaven and I’ll see him again one day. It still hurts though and I’m crying just writing this. My Maltipoo Chloe and I sure do miss him. ❤️

I have a rescue dog who suffers from seizures. Best thing to do is to put your hand under there head on the floor so it doesn't smash onto the hard surface. gently pet them and speak to them calmly. be sure to time the event; anything over 2 minutes you should notify your vet. (assuming your vet already know your dog has them) your dog will most likely be shaky and confused after be sure to comfort them but give them space to breath. some medications can be prescribed to reduce the amount and severity of seizures.

@@ConspirHerSee so for her it’s not like epilepsy with like flashing lights or anything like that. She can cause herself a seizure is she over works herself, especially now she has a heart murmur, or if she gets bumped in the head. I have a 2year old son and he hit her in the head with an object one day and it instantly caused her a seizure but overall She thankfully doesn’t have them all that often. Usually once every couple months but slightly more often when it’s hot.
She had 3 in one week once and I was very afraid we’d lose her but that was probably a year ago. She was shortly after diagnosed with the very early stages of a heart murmur.
We recently took her to the vet for dental surgery so they did blood tests and surprisingly she is perfectly healthy for her age.

I work at an Emergency animal hospital. Do NOT handle your dogs during or right after a seizure! They need to come out of it on their own. Place fans around them and try to cool them down as best as you can (you can also put ice cubes in a bag and apply it to their feet). They overheat easily during a seizure. If the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, or there is more than one in 24 hours, see a veterinarian immediately.
