Having a seizure. Talk calm, soft, pet. & don’t hold or restrict movement. When it passes still keep calm & quiet. Could take up to an hour to recover completely. May also be very thirsty, or not thirsty or hungry for many hours & usually wants to sleep after.
Dogs can still hear and understand you while they are having a seizure, and it is good to talk to them and provide comfort while it’s happening. Edit: There are different types of dog seizures and not all are unconscious during the episode. While the brain is misfiring motor function, it does not always impair sensory perception. In fact, it has been shown in studies that comforting your dog during seizures can decrease the length they occur. This information was confirmed by my vet. 🙂
No they can't. Best to stay quiet and calm and dont touch them. Taking and touching will stimulate their nerves and can make the seizure longer. Even after it's over they are often confused and may bite if you pet them. Get a blanket for a pillow and one for any bowel movements it's all you can do.
If this ever happens to you, try not to panic. Often times they can still hear you and are mostly conscious still. If you assure them and comfort them with your presence. It can make the whole event a whole lot less scary for them. Also be sure to keep their head from bumping the ground. Afterwards call or take them to the vet.
@@Liamfavorstheboweh some seizures are caused by drugs but some just come by birth that can happen like come and go but are not deadly, i went with my 10th grade class on school camp, and some kid had seizures cuz they were switching the lights on and off 💀

Please people if this happens to your dog don’t grab the collar I know he was just scared and not sure what to do but gently hold their head to make sure it’s not smacking the ground and then just do your best to sooth the dog or whatever animal it may be while actively calling the vet or driving to an emergency vet. Our dogs deserve the world so please just take the time to know what to do in situations like these, they love you so much, show them that same love.
They are still there, comfort them gently and speak in a soft voice. Just be there for them, there's nothing you can really do physically aside from maybe touching them and reassuring them you are there. Miss you lil npc.
Poor guy. I know this all too well. Whenever this happens i just try to be gentle and verbally comfort him until he comes down from it. We've been lucky that medication and monitoring has allowed him to have a generally normal life. Best of luck to you guys
Tenho uma gata que sofre com convulsões, graças a Deus a medicação e o monitoramento também tem tornado a vida dela mais segura. Mas acho que a medicação afeta a ferritina , então sempre tenho que estar de olho nisso também.
I remember my buddy's first siezure, i didn't sleep all night, sat by him comforting him all night through his siezures, i hate that stress it puts on you every time it happens if he doesn't take his medication i never know if it's gunna be the last time i see him
I found figuring out a stressor to them and solving it before it can trigger Tham helps a ton. So if playing to hard without a break is causing it, try to train them to understand "take a few moments to get yourself calm" then come back. I had a service dog like this and she was such a lover. She lived to be 14 Shepard/Pit mix 🫶🏻
@nicoleguiher1665 i think it started happening to him a few years ago during the fourth of july there was i really loud firework that scared him idk if that's what triggered it or maybe it's an age thing since he's older now idk
That’s what you supposed to do except the part when he’s scared and saying screaming hey hey you supposed to be calm when this happens didn’t you read not one comment of this short or don’t you have a dog
I was told by my vet to talk softly to them when they are having a seizure, reassuring them you are here with them. I’m so sorry you’re having to go through this. It is stressful for a pet owner for sure. Prayers for you and your fur babies. Your other dog knew to stop interacting with the seizure dog. How amazing.
Dogs are like humans they have seizures and everything but they can still hear aswell, i find it amazing how alike we can be and knowing they know that we love them just as much as they love us
But humans can't hear during their seizures, I have epilepsy but don't hear during my grand mal seizures, which is like what the dog I happening, I don't remember them at all which is normal, I'll just be standing there then feel like I'm being electrocuted for a second then I wake up on a stretcher with people in an ambulance asking me who the president is, stuff like that is usually what happens, people say I was on the ground seizing but I have no memory of it ever, and my doctor says that's normal, because during a seizure there's not much oxygen to the brain so we don't actually know what's going on during a seizure, not conscious
For generalized seizures the person is completely unaware of what's going on, but the brain is still absorbing stimulus so when we 'come to' our brains have to reboot and it's an incredibly frustrating, stressful, and can even be scary/violent situation. Dogs are similar. They can't hear during a grandmal
Do not panic when an animal is having a seizure! The animal can still sense that your scared or whatever your feeling will affect the animal and make things worse. Stay calm at all times and if it happens constantly take them to a vet all you have to do it talk to them and give them the comfort they need and talk in a soft voice. Hope this helps for anyone
@@Woomperz it’s ok just if it happens again keep calm and make sure you pet them and talk to him in a soft voice. I did the same thing when it first happened to me so I completely understand. Hope this helps 😊

His buddy reacting immediately scared is amazing the other dog knew right away something was wrong, this is one of the scariest things that can happen to a person or a pup
Exactly he stayed there on his face for a good minute almost like he was sniffing it like he could tell something wasn’t right and then backed away immediately he knew something was wrong
My aunts dog also had epilepsy, it was so severe for him, putting his life at risk, the doctors said that he is in a lot of pain and said its better to take him out ( he had brain cancer so he would die soon anyway ) :( he was an amazing dog, he was also still a puppy :(
Wrong as can be. During Seizures the brain is going crazy and has no idea wtf is going on, I know from personal experience. When I wake up from one, NOTHING helps but time.
You NEVER hold back an epileptic because there is a risk of causing damage. Even less is there a need to caress him because he is not conscious, so he doesn't feel anything. The only thing is to put something soft under your head and as soon as the crisis ends, run to the vet.

I had a dog who seized non stop for the whole day that we decided to let him go. My mom comforted him over the phone as she was out of state. Horrifying. I'm sorry you had to go through that.
Most animals are much smarter than we give them credit for. Watch cattle/bulls with large horns. They are always so careful and aware of where their horns are and do their best not to touch people and things with them.
@@Zero_InertiaYup they can sense it before it happens, what the service dogs are for. You can see the other pup that let go off is having stressed smile with the corners off the mouth pulled back.
That's pretty typical for dogs. If you yelp, shout "Ow!" or display pain in any other way while playing with a well-trained dog, they'll immediately stop playing and check on you.
I know it looks scary, but you got to remain calm. The dog can hear your voice at times and it will make them seize more. The best thing that you can do is take a breath and let it happen and once it stops you need to immediately get under the emergency room.

I lost my 11 year old Maltese, Jake, about a year ago. He was basically healthy with no history of seizures. It was the middle of the night and I was asleep on the sofa. I woke to the sound of him bumping the floor violently shaking. He had come to me, I’m sure, because he realized something was wrong. It scared me so bad. He wet himself and was violently shaking, head thrown back, just like this poor baby in the video. After he seemed to calm down, I wrapped him in a blanket, picked him up and held him close to me. He actually cried (in the way dogs do) for a little while but wasn’t the same after that. I took him to my vet the next morning. He told me the seizure caused brain damage. I had to let Jake go because I could see he was suffering. And I swear, I knew he was scared, kinda in shock. I believe all dogs go to heaven and I’ll see him again one day. It still hurts though and I’m crying just writing this. My Maltipoo Chloe and I sure do miss him. ❤️

Anyone who has female miniature schnauzers needs to be aware of this. Happened to mine too :( it was such a heart drop picking up her limp body. They come back out of it and walk around like nothing happened but in reality their little heart’s sinus rhythm is on the Fritz and they’re not getting enough oxygen to their brain.
I have a rescue dog who suffers from seizures. Best thing to do is to put your hand under there head on the floor so it doesn't smash onto the hard surface. gently pet them and speak to them calmly. be sure to time the event; anything over 2 minutes you should notify your vet. (assuming your vet already know your dog has them) your dog will most likely be shaky and confused after be sure to comfort them but give them space to breath. some medications can be prescribed to reduce the amount and severity of seizures.

My golden retriever started having seizures in 2021. After that, she would have one at least once a month. A year later, it seemed like it was once a week. In mid-December, i believe she had a stroke. Her head tilted, she couldn't walk on her own anymore. Then she passed on December 31st, at 15. The seizures are always so hard to deal with. You never get used to them. I'm just happy she can finally rest. Rest in Peace, baby girl. 11/8/07 - 12/31/22.

keeping her alive for your comfort alone would have been more selfish. You made the decision that hurt her the least and you shouldn't feel bad for it. I'm sure your little lady wouldn't want you to beat yourself up, now would she? be well friend.
Hey man, it’s a hard choice to make but sometimes it’s better to go with dignity than be kept alive just to wither away. Your dog had love from the start to the end and as long as you can say you tried to make the dog happy and comfortable that’s all there is to it. Many dogs don’t even get 10 let alone 15.

This is known as a dog seizure, and in order to calm the dog down, it is by talking or comforting the dog so that it will calm down and the seizure will go away.
My boy Atlas has epilepsy. His seizures aren’t as severe but can last a few minutes. If he has any really bad ones or if they go on too long I can’t give him a squirt of diazepam into his butt. He doesn’t ever really need it though. It used to be very scary but we are used to it now. He doesn’t seem to care either. The moment it’s over he returns straight back to wanting to run around and play.

They can't hear during a grandmal

just pinch hard on his belly or his paw... his brain will react to it and stop his seizures

May ur furry family member REST IN PEACE along side God.
❤
Sorry for your loss.
I'll pray for your baby to not have any more seizures.. my heart goes out to the family
when my 15 year old dog started having seizures i took her to her vet and a brain tumor was discovered…one of the hardest decisions of my life was to let her go…medication wouldn’t help her and she was suffering so much…she’d been my service dog for 13 of her 15 years…i still feel guilty about my decision because she gave me her best for 13 years and the best i could give her her was to let her go…i really hope and pray your dog is better and his condition is treatable
keeping her alive for your comfort alone would have been more selfish.
I’m sorry :( I had a cat who also had a brain tumor, and has seizures at the age of 12. She was always in my life, before I was born so it hurt. We noticed She only had the tumor for a week, before dying. Or Atleast we think. I remember when she had a seizure the night she passed, it’s really sad to see it and 8 year old me freaked out because my mom was in another room. I’m happy you chose to not let them suffer, that is a lot better then anything else :(😢

I had a dog that had severe seizures. They were fairly manageable until one day they weren't. Had to call my daughter and her husband to get him to the vet since I'm in a wheelchair. It was so heartbreaking having to talk her through putting him down, at least she saw it was for him, not convenience. It was traumatic

Poor thing. His buddy instantly knew something was wrong
This is known as a dog seizure, and in order to calm the dog down, it is by talking or comforting the dog so that it will calm down and the seizure will go away.
Thanks g
yes but keep in mind that the seizure isn’t just going to end. it will end on its own but that will help keep the dog calm afterwards

How does a dog develop seizures?
I feel so bad. I think dog might be having your other dog being too hard and now he is having a allergic reaction and dogs die.
Whenever this happens be calm, be collected, be comforting. They’ve lost control of their bodies, but are still aware of everything. You being an island of security in an ocean of terror will bring them back faster. Eventually it will take them, but you can still have many happy healthy years with them. My Cooper lived a good ten years with this. I still miss him.
My dogs name was Cooper too! He was a goldendoodle. Just recently lost him, he was throwing up then passed away. Hard time for my family and I. He was also 10. And I'm sorry you lost your dog. ❤
RIP Cooper 😔
The medication is My dog also have seizures problem but the medicine i give him is
gardenal 60, levetiracetam, you can use this two or else use epicare syrup with gardinal tablets it works best and give according to weight of your dog.

This breaks my heart. The same thing was happening to my little buddy Damein. We took him to the vet and a tumor was found in his brain. They tried everything they could, but after several months the tumor took my buddy from us. Please have him checked out soon. Praying for the pup and family.

If you ever have this happen to your dog. Just sit with them and pet them slowly, and calmly talk to them. Tell them positive affirmations. “You’re such a good boy/girl.” “It’s okay, buddy.”
Just stay calm.
If you’re freaking out. They’re freaking out.
That’s what I did with my dog. I’d get soon the floor with hi
And talk with him until the sexier was over
Sexier? Turn off the autocorrect bud
Actually you should not interfere with them at all unless they are about to fall or biting there tongue…. You can make the seizure longer by interacting with them (e.g talking and touching)

Do they need to go to the Vet for checkup after that?
My pup just had a seizure about a week ago. It was terrifying and worse not being able to do anything to help. I hope he made a full recovery!
If it repeats again, just be calm and track time (if it’s less than 5 minutes, it’s still not critical). And please remember not to hug or kiss him/her right after the seizure. They are being still unconscious and may hurt you (me and my brother got bit from my Labrador). And pls pls plssss never leave him because of that. He/she is no different from other dogs ❤
Yeah i agree with the comment on this. If it happens again, stay close but be careful because the first few minutes "he aint himself"
Thank you for the advice! Thankfully it only lasted about 15-20 seconds. What they don’t tell you is completely normal are the after effects. Our girls vision took about a day to return to normal. She’s been her normal self since and the vet blames age as nothing obvious was found! Thankfully !!
Bruh what do you mean "I hope he had a full recovery" isn't he your your puppy do you know how to check your vet?
My dog used to have them regularly, lasting up to 10 minutes, 2 back to back, 1x per month. Even with that, our vet always tells us "they look more dangerous than they are." Hold on to that! She is stable on meds now. Seizure free for 3 years!
You see him shaking you’re not doing nothing you see him shaking you see your dog biting him. You’re not doing nothing.

My girl sought me out to hold her when she would have seizures. Unfortunately she suffered from them on and off the last 10 years of her life. Does she seize often or do things trigger seizures that can be avoided?
@@ConspirHerSee so for her it’s not like epilepsy with like flashing lights or anything like that. She can cause herself a seizure is she over works herself, especially now she has a heart murmur, or if she gets bumped in the head. I have a 2year old son and he hit her in the head with an object one day and it instantly caused her a seizure but overall She thankfully doesn’t have them all that often. Usually once every couple months but slightly more often when it’s hot.
She had 3 in one week once and I was very afraid we’d lose her but that was probably a year ago. She was shortly after diagnosed with the very early stages of a heart murmur.
We recently took her to the vet for dental surgery so they did blood tests and surprisingly she is perfectly healthy for her age.
