Going wider on pullups doesn't focus more on width. It limits the range of motion of the lats, thus limiting their development. Shoulder width or narrower gives the lats the greatest stretch and range of motion and thus the greatest development. The function of the lats is to bring your arm from directly overhead , down towards your torso. Using a wider grip only activates the other muscles (mid-lower traps and rhomboids) more and takes the strain away from your lats.
