Excellent video Warren! As always 😎
Thanks ***** I really appreciate it!
Nice!
Thanks MOSHAEMUSIC I really appreciate it!
Hi Warren, I've been watching your videos for quite awhile now, but I had no idea of how good a guitar player you are. Nice job! Impressive.
Hi +Sean McAleavy Thanks very kind of you! I love playing guitar! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Thank yous aren't necessary. I was just voicing an honest observation. Good of you to respond though. In actuality I should be thanking you for benefiting from your years of hard earned experience. So, thank you good sir.
@@Producelikeapro 😲indeed, simply astonished!
Warren I appreciate these videos so much. For me its a gift every time you share the ways you record and produce. I just wish I will be as effective and knowledgeable as you someday, and all the while just being a great guy! I think it so great that you don't have to make these videos, yet you work very hard on them just to teach people like me. I might have access to a studio now but when I do I like to think that I'll be prepared. Thank you, thank you.
Hi Jared Eliasson wow!! Thanks very much for the extremely kind words! I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Warren you are providing us with priceless knowledge and experience in recording, i don't know how to thank you enough, keep it up
Thanks Tim Sot I really appreciate that! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Warren, everything you do is gold! Thank you for these mic techniques. You are a fabulous player! Amazed by your multiple talents
I am just getting to watch your videos and I can't thank you enough, I do loads of recording but there is always something to learn and share, you are doing a fantastic job and it is a real pleasure to see you giving so much information and quality stuff that we guitarist love so much. Cheers
Thanks ever so much Ricardo! That's very kind of you!
Great video, would have been cool if you'd used the same guitar the whole time to really show how the miking techniques change the sound though.
Hi Steven Lynn, thanks for the great comment, I really appreciate it! I changed guitars and amp from the Marshall, but when I went to the Vox AC30 I stayed on the same guitar so you could hear the difference that the SM57 and Ribbon Mics and positioning brought to it. I can and will do other videos that stay on only one amp and one guitar, this one I was trying to get a few amps in and show the many different approaches to miking cabs and open back combos. Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren
I want my songs to sound as good as I can get them so thanks to people like you and youtube you are the best
Hi +steven john Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
AIC is my all time favourite band, and I had no idea until you mentioned it that this was how they recorded their guitar tracks! Fricking amazing..Thanks so much Warren \m/
Thanks for tanking the time to make these informative videos. I know they are fun to make but they also require a lot of your time. They are top notch!!!
Great tutorial Warren. I have watched endless videos on amp miking, and this is the first time I have ever seen anyone mic up the speaker from the back. I loved the sound you got there. Wonderful info to be sure. I will be experimenting big time with that trick. Thanks for all of the awesome and informative videos. I have learned a bunch of new things watching you. BTW, nice playing. :)
Thanks Phil Sackett I really appreciate it! So glad I could help and thanks for the compliment! Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren Huart
Just Joined, I am a session Gtr Player, great to see that you can play man. Your a good player..................Lance Sabin
Hi +Lance Sabin Thanks very much! Yes I started off as a guitar player! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren! just dropping in my huge appreciation and thumbs up to you and your channel! you seem like the nicest guy ever, your videos are great, easy to understand and very informative! You're star mate, Cheers!
Hi +Pe Peroni Aw shucks!! You Rock! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Just seeing this video now after 8 years, as I’m about to embark on recording and mixing guitars and will take all this into consideration,
Thanking Warren
Not only you're a great producer but you're a great guitarist. :)
This is making me excited about recording electric guitars! Thanks Warren.
Wow, you are great guitar player! Nice chops (and tone, of course)! ;)
Hi Ha Nguyen thank you ever so much! That's very kind of you! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Thanks so much Warren for putting out soooo much info on your channel. I would say it is the same for many of your other subscribers as it is for me, in that, it's really great to get such well informed, practical and usable ideas from a pro producer like yourself, again, really appreciate the time you take to put out all the varied videos which cover so many aspects from, mixing with plugins, DI info, amps and amp miking, mics used within vocal recordings, be it dynamic, condenser, ribbon and the specified areas of mixes, be it toward drums, guitar, bass, vocals or the overall mix itself. I'm spending a lot of time getting a handle on my own projects and it's going great, but always nice to have someone in the know like yourself to open up the ideas further with regard to what else can be done.
Also, big fan of the studio tours!!;-)
Thanks again and all the best to you and yours.
I have a marvelous time watching these videos. So much so I sometimes froth at the gash.
I'm still discovering your amazing early videos! This one is great.
Thanks very much
Thanks so much for giving away some of your "tricks", It*s really helpfull! Love the ide of micing the back of the amp. This video gives inspiration!
I use GarageBand. Recording the amp, a small Marshall, I get so much volume, the Amp settings have to be all the way down. I use a Focusrite interface. My question is how do you adjust the interface and the DAW to get a nice sound without the amp turned way down? I'd love to know what can be done and how to not get a very hard and rough recording. Do you use headphones to monitor the DAW live?
Hi *****, thanks for the great question! I would suggest buying a pad for your mic if the amp is putting out a huge amount of volume. I believe a 10-20db mic pad would be around $20 or so. That can bring down the gain going into your DAW considerably and avoid distorting your DAW. I do often use headphones when placing my mic on my cab, I have those Extreme Isolation Headphones which really helps in loud situations. Let me know how it all goes! Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren Huart
Hi Warren another great vid thanks for taking the time to record post and share your wealth of knowledge and experience with us. I greatly appreciate it. Many kind regards from Ireland.
The moment you realize that the reason I've always needed some "buttom" and the lovely low mids i missed from the room and the amp is....
You NEED to record back of the amp too.... Doh!!
Thx Warren :D Man I feel stupid...
I am so glad that I found your channel. I'm going to be getting my first interface soon and am planning on recording my own music. You have such great information, I feel like you are a one stop shop! lol Thanks for all you do and keep up the good work!
Hi Warren! Great video as usual;) One question: what about the volume levels? I hear a lot of guys are recommending to crank up the volume so that the speaker starts to move the air (speaker excursion) and then some are going as far as to go for the cabinet resonance volumes. What is your take on that?
Thank you and have a marvelous time recording!;)
Hi +Evgeny Sazhin Great question! It really depends on your preference for tone! I grew up mic'ing small speakers primarily, they worked harder and I got the tone I require! But using a 15 on some guitar tones I kept the volume lower and git a very fat tone! I would strongly suggest you experiment as there is no right way! Thanks very much I really appreciate it!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
For me, my tone is from pedals. I got rid of the amp altogether. Live and in the studio. I run my pedals into a focus rite pre amp. The trick is that I use a Roger Meyer voodoo vibe. I send its AMP 2 output to a second DI Live and in studio. Now I have one PA speaker for the audience and one for me and my drummer to hear (we use looping so we need it to hear very well). The "stereo" effect of having two "amp speakers" (PA speakers in this case) is 10x more satisfying than any amp i ever played since i was 12 years old. I can have the speakers up on 6 foot stands so Im not blowing the audience out with guitar (its above their heads this way). That VOODOO VIBE though- sounds like a glassy, pristine yet dirty little amp all its own. An EHX POG sounds massive through a PA. I don't think ill use amps any time soon. In the studio I mic the PA speakers with two inexpensive AKG cardioid pencil condensers bc I want the recording to sound just like the speakers sound in my room. Just thought I'd weigh in with my set up. Im proud of it. Been chasing it for 14 years. BTW my vintage cheap Telestar sounds crazy through this rig. Especially with 1k and 400 boosted on the mxd Graphic EQ. Just saying, you can create many tones, or you can buy one big ol fender or fox tone.
Hi +Joe “JazEGeoff” Sepe Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Wow the Roger Meyer is AMAZING!! Also agreed the Electro Harmonix POG is amazing! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Warren this video blew my mind. Thanks for sharing this valuable information and secret tips. I'll be sure to try to use it next time I set up some guitar cabinets. You covered so much ground in so little time!
Hi +monkey dangus AW shucks thanks! I tried to cover as many different techniques as possible! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Note to self:
Intro (Marshal Front) 1:07
Front only 3:40
Front and back 4:24
Ribbon both speakears 6:17
Small amp condenser center 7:51
Big condenser 10:22
Fantastic! Thanks ever so much for sharing
Hey, look who's got some seriously tasty phrasing there! Thanks for the micing tips- I always learn a lot from you!
Aw shucks! Thanks ever so much
The Carl Martin stuff is great, but would you record the guitar tone with the delay or do you add delay after?
Hi +Jak Leyton Great question! It depends! I like to print the way I want to hear it, but sometimes if it's a really tight delay in time with the track then I will use an on board delay. Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Great Video! Actually, i would like to see a video where you tell about different types of microphones, what kinds are better for drums, what better for amps etc. Cause it's kinda confusing when i look at the store and see lots of different mics and i dont what is better for what and why. It would be so great you if record something like this
Thanks niZe afonya thanks for the question! That's a great idea, I will do one of those in the near future. You can also check out my drum recording video if you sign up for my mailing list at www.producelikeapro.com, there I talk about some of the mics that I use all the time. Many thanks! Have a marvelous time recording Warren
can you post some videos introducing common equipment for recording thanks!
thanks for the comment, I appreciate it! Yes I'm going to do more videos using affordable excellent equipment! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren.
Warren .. another great video .. super clear and concise.. thanks for sharing.
I have a feeling that the 57 on the back side of the open back amp will solve the problem I've been having on my Blues jr. Thanks!
Hi Justin Webster great! Yes I love that trick! Do it all the time! Obviously remember to flip the polarity of the back mic. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I only have a Peavy Viper tube 120 watt. and thought miking was only good w/high gain for best sound. BUT, i followed instructions to the tee and only used a master volume of 2.5w/condenser mics and OMG the tone was much better than DI ! Thanks Warren.(ps..Warren also has great bass recording and mixing tuts too)
Hey Warren i love the sound of that Vox,have you ever played with the Klon Centaur pedals?
Thanks Kyle rowe I appreciate it! Yes the Klon Centaur is an amazing pedal!!
Watched every second of this Tutorial. Learned about Pencil Condenser Mic. Thanks again Warren!
Many thanks David Koval
HI Warren. Nice tips. Would you record the guitar signal with the delay engaged (Fender Jr) or was it just for the sake of the video? Thx!
Great question James Creek! I usually set up the exact sound I want and record, that would be with any effects I want to use. But I always record a Di as well so if I want change the sound I can. Many thanks!
Best video on this dubject so far!
Thanks ever so much!!
Hi Warren... wanted to ask a common doubt.... while tracking guitars with mics, there is always some hiss sound that is tracked.. how to handle it in the mix ?
Hi, thank you very much for the video. I'm wondering why does one has to record from a mic when he can just use the interface and the software? I see a lot doing it, please, I wanna know why?
Thanks you again. :)
Hi Adamo Racine thanks for the great question! You can of course use Amp Simulations in your DAW. This tutorial is to show how you can record live guitars! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
You probably figured this out in the last five years but modeling and plugins are great but they can't replicate 100% of the characteristics of a really good amp. Often a guitarist has dialed in their sound through an amp, typically a tube amp of their choice. It's as much a part of their sound as their guitar and their fingers. Ask the Edge or Brian May to swap their AC30s for an imitation AC30 modeling software and they would probably kick you the face. I worked hard to get a good tone from my AC30, so I want to capture that character in recording. A producer friend of mine wants me to record my amp and send a DI track to him as well, to mix with potential other amp sims. And I'm like you can fuck right off...or refund me my $1,400 I spent on my amp!
Great content as usual! Keep it coming! You have anything on acoustic?
Hi +Robert McClellan Thanks very much! Yes here it is:- ruclips.net/video/9YinM0hJlfw/видео.html Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Have you ever tried strapping a pencil condenser to an SM57 to mic a guitar cab? Or using a pair of SM57s in an XY on the front speakers?
Hi Steven Butler yes I tried quite a few multi mic options on guitar cabs, personally I like one most of the time, I like the polarity to be perfect. Thanks very much for the great comment! I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren! Have a little problem. Was trying to mic my brand new Marshall dsl5cr combo with sm57 and got an interference humming going from the power button of amp. In this situation I cannot mic my amp with close mic position. Is it OK? Thanks
Hi Warren. Do you have a favourite guitar cabinet to mic? Eg. 4x12 Greenbacks, 2x12 Vintage 30's and so on?
Hi +Jak Leyton I really like vintage 25 or 30's! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Great video, helps me out with my Music Tech coursework!
That's fantastic to hear CDogMate! I really appreciate it! Have a marvelous time recording, many thank Warren
Great video! All awesome approaches. Thanks! (great guitar chops too).
Hey Warren.
Loving the videos.
I have a Epiphone ES335 Pro with ToneRider Pickups. Blackstar HT20 with a Vintage 30 speaker. Play rock music mainly. Use a Klon clone and a tubescreamer a lot. But i'm struggling to get a nice tight rock drive sound. I think it might be the pickups. They were already installed when I bought the guitar. Is there any other pickups you can suggest or is the ToneRider pups fine?
Hi +Christiaan Rossouw (Chris Ross) Great question! Yes it could be the Pickups, I personally love Seymour Duncan pickups, but definitely any good quality pick up would do an amazing job! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
In general with SM 57 , we should point it to the centre of the speaker , the edge or something in between? I worked some time ago instuuos and pointing it to the centre is a no go, the tone sounded like direct line.
Hi Alexandre, marvellous question! The centre is the brightest sound, the edge is the dullest, yes, usually I split it somewhere in the middle. However it would entirely depend on the sound I was trying to achieve!
How much hum can you filter. I assume your vox does make a little noise that get`s picked up by the mic
Turorials newer talk about idle amdp humming/ noise.
Hope you get what i mean.
Hi +Jan Demant I completely understand! Yes I do try to deal with basic hum generated by the guitar pickups but adjusting the seating position until it's great reduced. 60 cycle hum can be EQ'd out. I hope that help! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
exellent video, loved the sound with the akg. hopefully I can emulate it with slightly less expensive mics. thank you. great tips
Hi +Ben Archer Fantastic! Definitely there are cheaper options!! I use Lewitt Mics a lot and they are much more affordable! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
First, my compliments on your fine guitar playing! Whether you are playing clean, or dirty, you display excellent technique, and precise playing. You are versatile and well skilled! Very well done! The second point is...the mic technique on open backs was quite valuable. I have a recently acquired Mesa Mark V single 12 inch open back combo, and it just lacks a certain something when I record it using a single mic. If I push it through a closed back Mesa 2x12 it's fat as can be. I will use a pair of 57's on it, and see if I cant fatten it up a bit! I am very grateful for these many video technical videos that offer the insiders tips, as they are borne of experience, and real world trial and error. Thanks again!
When you use two 57s where do you place the second one?
Larry Tate one in front, one in back. both diametrically opposed, and about equal distance from the dust cap, or speaker cone.
On the closed back I mean.
Larry Tate you dont! :-)
Terrific video! Thanks for sharing with us!
Hi +JamesVincenzoMusic Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Great video, since the klons are $2,000 would you recommend a klone of one?
Wow!!! Kyle rowe $2,000? That's crazy money. I don't know the clones, who makes them?
@warrenhuartrecording yep some of the gold ones on ebay are even more, pretty ridiculous, there's a company from iceland called pedal projects he claims to make a good one
I've heard the original and it's wonderful Kyle rowe, however I agree the price is extremely high and probably aimed at collectors! Have a marvelous time recording.
Rockett Pedals Archer sounds great, I know Steve Stevens prefers the Rockett over the original.
Hi Warren: Is there an exact distance from the amp for the condenser mic? I can see it's about three feet but, just wondering if it should be precise ? Thanks !
Hi as I only have one sm57 would it work using a bass mic such as an Akg d112 in the back of the amp?
Hi +benfrench93 That would work pretty well indeed! I have done those exact things when I didn't have matched pair, plus the back has all the bottom end and a D112 will pick it up great! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks Warren. I'm checking out your lessons and learning a lot. Let's do another Reckidd! ;-)
Thanks Joe Bouchard! I really appreciate it! Yes let's do another Album! Many thanks Warren
Hey Warren!
I noticed a hizz sound in between notes when using the ribbon mic on the Vox amp. My question is: Is that hizz noise always present or are there ways to eliminate it before ot reaches the DAW?
Whenever I have mics right on the cloth - whether SM57 or a ribbon - I get all the spiky string plasticness and pick noise. My preamp, I/O, amp, guitar, everything else is top stuff, but on-cloth mics give awful results for me. I like warmer backed-off ribbon tones anyway, but every now and then I need the hard rock option and simply can't capture it.
hey, can u tell me where did the mic plugged-in to, for recording and for live set? thank you
Hey Warren, Great videos! I have been following your instagram for a long time and didn't know you have a youtube channel!
I have 1 question regarding multiple miking techniques for guitar amps.
How do you deal with the phasing issue if you place 2 microphones at the same time but not at the same place. Let say for example, a SM57 right up the grill cloth and a ribbon mic for the room. How to you blend those 2 signals? I would just align the phase on post/editing instead but Im not sure whether that is the best way to do it. :)
Hi shahfeeqjibin87 thanks for the great question. I personally would use both mics side by side or have one far enough back so it's definitely a room mic. You could definitely move them to each other in post, but you might find the ribbon a way back might sound vey cloudy. Thanks for watching and the great comment! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hello again.... For a royer 101a I jut got and didn't know about placing farther away like the ribbon in your demonstration... or would it really depend on the material??? What I have seen most everyone puts it close but I know ribbons are sensitive to loud material.. is that correct??
Hi Tim Adams thanks for the great question! If you are going to go close to the cab I would face the mic at 90 degrees to the speaker so the figure of 8 is across the speaker, does that make sense? It will fair better at high SPL and will sound fantastic! Thanks very much I really appreciate your kind words!! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro so being that figure 8 is front and behind, so the mic would in essence be perpendicular? ???
Haha Tim Adams I suppose ones mans perpendicular is not perpendicular! As long as the capsule is facing left and right not directly on you will get the desired effect. Try it out and let me know how you get on! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro will do and thanks
Hi Tim Adams thank you! I'm excited to hear how you get on. Many people put a SM57 over the 121 as in phase as possible and then blend the 2 mics together. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Thanks for the insight. I just set up a small studio in a small room, I'm using a MacBook Pro, studio one 3 artist. My question is
My amp is a 50watt EVH with 2x12, was trying to mic the amp running to the Focusrite 2i2, then into the computer but find I have
To really turn up to get decent levels. I'm using 551 MXR condenser mic with phantom on. Can u come out of the pre amp or headphone
Jack to the Focusrite? Would this help boost the signal?
Hi +TommyV Virs Great question! I would definitely just use the mic or use a virtual amp in your DAW. The sound from an amps pre amp or the headphone out put, unless specially designed as an amp modeller is never very good! But you could always just try it and see! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren, great video, thank you!
Never thought about micing the back of a combo as well. Will surely try it next time.
If you'd record this amps for a record, would you leave them on the floor, or rise them up and put them on a chair or stand?
I'd love to see a video on re-amping. If and when it's worthwhile to do, and how to best do it, and avoid hum & noise as much as possible.
Thanks :)
Thanks for watching David Mood! Yes I learned that trick from Dave Jerden, he used it on Alice in Chains and Janes Addiction albums. I don't often reamp di signals but when I do I highly recommend the Radial one, it sounds amazing!! I always keep the amp on the ground, I like the low end I get from that. Many thanks, have a marvelous time recording! Warren
Warren Huart Recording
Thank you, have a marvelous time as well :)
Thanks very much David Mood
Hi Warren! Thank you just bought a pair of SM57s and I love it 🤘 I wonder do you pan the two tracks? 🤔😁
The front and back Mics are both in mono
@@Producelikeapro thank you kindly 🙂🍻
Hi Warren, i have a question, how do you flip the polarity on a SM57?
Thanks.
So the mice are plugged into in interface?
Hi Ross Andersen Thanks for watching! I assume you are asking what mic pres I'm using with the mics? These mics were going through my BAE 312's directly to Pro Tools with no compression. Have a marvelous time recording!
Do open back cabs lose bottom end in the front or do they just give you more options because of the open back?
I have a presonus m7 large diaphragm condenser mic and it seems no matter how far away or close I out the mic and how low I put the preamp it distorts and is overly bassy. Is my amp just turned up too loud or is my mic defective? I'm just staring out trying to record some tracks and I'm at my first bump already.
Love it ! Both tone and playing:) thank you.
These are great suggestions. However, I have to record silently at home. I use my Marshall JMP-1 with its cab sim output which isn't too bad, and I have an AMT pedal that sounds reasonably good and has some cool crunch sounds. My idea was to split my guitar signal and feed that to the Marshall and the AMT, feed that in to my TC G-Major for a few effects and record that. Do you have any experience with direct recording?
hey I have a question what differences it makes if we record on amp or by direct connecting to audio interface coz we can choose amps on PC too also with mic placements...
Hi +dishant samota Great question! That's really a matter of preference, it depends on what you prefer the sound of. There is such a wide range of sounds available with Amp Simulators, but obviously your own amp, mic, mic pre etc is completely unique so it's great to be able to create your own sound that no one else has! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Oo wow that was so simple m glad to have u..m learning from u n completing all lessons in order acc to ur playlists.. Thank u😎🎸
Hi +dishant samota Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
For what that room is, it sounds surprisingly pleasing. That C12 is truly nice sounding as well. All of them sounded great though to be honest. What was your signal chain after the mic on this?
Hi +HoustnWeHavUhoh p Thanks for the great question! I probably went straight to the BAE 1073DMP to my DAW, no compression. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hey Warren, this is awesome advice man! I'm looking into it as we speak, but do you think it is worth getting the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Studio 2nd Gen to start off with? I don't have much experience in recording...
The amps sound so clear is that from eqing the recordings? I have a peavey delta blues and there’s a lot of hiss or humming is that just the amp?
It could be your preamp or audio interface but I suspect probably the amp. Of course humbuckers reduce hum, but he also has hums/hiss if you listen carefully say at 6:15 when he pulls up his volume knob before playing. Also place the amp farther from other electronic devices which can amplify interference. Sometimes better cables too. In post, you can always use a gate too, although I usually set that very sparingly AND not completely shut out the sound, otherwise you could lose the tail of some sustained notes, unless you're playing chords that you end up muting fairly quick anyway.
neuroxik yeah thanks for pointing that out! I think it’s more so my mic positioning
OK, so Im a beginner and do not understand miking. Why? and where does the mic wire go?
Warren, what about a sm57 close mic and an akg p420 a little further away? Would that be a good setup? And would you set de akg at cardiod, figure eight or omni? Many thanks, love your vids!
Hi +Matt Henry I love the m57 close, I don;t know the AKG that well, I'm assuming you could use it as a room mic? In that case I would have it quite a long way away get some room sound, only a short way away would probably sound a little dark and just muddy the sound. I hope that helps? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro But would you use it in omni, figure eight or cardioid for that function?
Hi +Matt Henry Good question! Omni would be amazing for room tone! But I would print it separately of course! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro Print it separately? What does that mean? Thank you, Warren!
+Matt Henry I belive Warren means on a different track.
Silly question, but I am hitting a wall with guitar tracks/tones. Having trouble deciding which mics to use, how many takes per part, and how many tracks to use per take without mudding up my mix or being left with a mess of guitar takes/tracks.How many mics per take (close and far and what are the distances)? How many takes of a part (i.e. rhythm left and right etc.)I feel that maybe I am overdoing it at times, but then don't want to be in a "should've..." situation. Thanks - love the channel and all or any input is desired and much appreciated. Cheers!
Any suggestions on what amps are good for home recording? I heard small amps like 1watt are better.
Thank you sir ☺️ Super helpful. Especially regarding miking amps
Hi Warren, Hope you're having a wonderful day :) . Im curious about recording guitar Cabs. I have all 4x12 cabs here and Im thinking that I might get a better result with either a 112 or a 212 cab where Miking is concerned. Do you have any advice? I don't play Metal. Im more of a rock player and a clean stratocaster player. My main amp is a Friedman BE-100 (Its amazing). Love your shows.
Hi Warren, speaking of Lewitt mics have you tried Lewitt's MTP 440 DM ? It's one killer sounding dynamic mic ! Total sleeper ...
Yes Marius, yes, that's a very good mic! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
Hey Warren I'm new to your videos and home recording. I have a shure sm57 and an MXL 860. I also have 4x12 cabinet for my Mesa Boogie Triple Rect And a 2x12 Crate Combo (open back). How would you recommend using both of these mics and which would be better for recording acoustic guitars. I have classical nylon string acoustics. Thank you.... Ted
Great Video.Very useful, you can really HEAR the difference.
You are a great guitarist too!!
Excellent playing there Warren!
Great videos here Warren! So many options available... any thoughts on achieving crystal-clean shimmery tones with an amp/mic combo? I cant seem to get quite there thru my Fender Champ with my Rode NT 1000. Seems like direct is almost the way to go for those Cocteau like tones?
How do you flip the polarity on the sm57 mic? Thanks!
Have a vox vt40 I’m gonna try this on. Have to keep it low level though. You ever make a video on how to mix real guitar amps recorded at super low levels?
good stuff thanxx how do you flip polarity on mic ?
Hi +TOMMYBENICE66 Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! I flip the polarity on the mic pre or use a polarity reverse cable if you don't have that avail;able to you. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
thank you i never heard this
Hi +TOMMYBENICE66 Glad to b able to help! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
What would happen if you didn’t “flip” the polarity of the microphone at the back of the cabinet? Btw You’re a really steady blues and jazz player!
Nice licks.
great video! are you hitting any external preamps for these microphones on here?
Hi +cpres19 Great question! Yes I believe I was using a BAE1073DMP
Hi Warren, just subscribed! Great stuff. Really enjoying your videos, learning a lot.
I also have the Pro Jr., great sounding amp. Have you ever miked the back of that like you did with the Vox? Just wondering, considering the Fender is also an open-back.
Keep up the great work!
Hi MrClaywell, thanks for the great question! Yes I have miked the back as well and flipped the polarity of the back 57 to get the phase properly aligned, it sounds great. Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren
i'm wondering if you have had this issue. When recording I usually mic my amp. On a given day I'll work on a track and then come back to it the next day. The problem is the mic may have slightly changed position just by a hair and it completely changes the guitar tone from what I've previously recorded. Now when I continue it doesn't all sound uniform. It's such a pain and I don't want to have to record the whole thing in one shot initially. Any thoughts on a solution? How can I get that exact same mic placement?
I often mark the floor with coloured take to get the microphone stand and amp in exactly the same position. You can also mark the place on the grill cloth that the microphone is facing. Also, take a couple of photos! Or, record directly into your DAW and re-amp the entire performance one you've finished it.
Very informative! Thank you for sharing ☺️
You’re very welcome
Warren do you have any rules of thumb for reverb on guitar? Do you prefer to add the reverb in the mix or utilize the amp reverb, or both? I have a tube carvin amp I just started mic'ing up with an SM57 (open back so I gotta try the method in the video) and I love the sound of the physical spring plate reverb it has built in so I'll use that lightly when I track, just make sure to not kill it in case I change my mind. Also, since I've been mic'ing up my amp I've also been throwing some blankets over the rig to kill the reflections a little bit-- waiting on some bass traps for my room in the meantime since it's not currently the best acoustic space
Great video, Warren. Just found your RUclips channel and have enjoyed the first three videos of seen. Keep up the good work.
Aw shucks thanks Jed Wunderli I really appreciate it! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
"I've seen" - spell check. I'm watching more. Love them. What mixing board is that? Do you ever track with it or is it just for mixing outside of the box? Do you use that board to do your analogue summing?
Do you have a studio tour video? I haven't stumbled on it yet if you do.
Thanks Jed Wunderli I don't yet have a studio tour Video! But I will fairly soon! Thanks for watching I really appreciate it. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren, great video. I was just wondering how you get such low ambient amp noise? I've got some great sounds going on at home, but struggle with the low hum out of my AC15. (Using an SM57 with Fethead preamp) Any tips pre or post to reduce this?
Cheers.
I'm working with the same issue right now. Did you find out how to get rid of the noise?
Man...an AKG C12A! That thing sounds amazing! I would like to here that mixed with a 57 up tight as well. These videos are great my friend, I really enjoy watching them. Thank you.
Hi todd purnick Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Yes the AKGC12a is an amazing mic! I don't blend two mics together that often, I like the polarity to be great, but the C12a with a 57 would sound fantastic I'm sure! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
