I respect them for taking THEIR music in their own direction as the band developed and changed over time, but holy shit their first two EP were insane. There are things that I enjoy about all their work, but their earliest work is what I always come back too. I would love to see them revive this sound. I saw them open for RX Bandits many moons ago, only time I've ever been floored by an opener I've heard nothing about.
The reason this band is so fantastic, is that you can single out one guy and just pay attention to him, and watch the song four times and get four different experiences. They're all so fucking good and creative at their instruments that they're four separate spectacles at the same time.
Yeah fuck them for playing what they want to play and not what you want them to!! If anything their stuff from Perch Patchwork forward has *more* musical depth and complexity... it's just not a flaming fretboard smacking you in the face at 250 BPM and that upsets everyone. Fine. But let them do what they want, my god...
@@DamienTheCat thats cool and all but this sound here is what made them interesting to most people. Later stuff sounds like it could come from anyone else and I think the decline in popularity reflects that.
I am one of the lucky few to have seen this live at this show! I had no idea it would be on here ten years later! It was a little chilly outside on that night, but when me and my buddies got there, the line was out the door! we only went there to see them, what a great show! My friends and I were right in the middle of the crowd with a great view. This band was our everything back then, I met the guitarist, singer and drummer at a free show they played in wisconsin in july of 2008. They are so humble and shy haha!
Mary D'Orio Saw them live in Columbia, Missouri and talked to him after the show. He was the most friendly, down-to-earth dude and obviously a great musician. All of the guys are incredibly cool and made me love them so much more.
Just saw this band last night with Circa Survive and States. Definitely one of the best bands ive seen live. Their performance is INCREDIBLE, and they are such talented musicians. This is one of those bands where you cant pick out ONE person that is more talented/more famous than the other because they are all so phenominal.
How is this 10 years old already?! I remember seeing these guys play in basements like it was yesterday. Is anyone still making music like this nowadays?
I remember seeing these guys play an old church or something, in lake forest IL, like 5 years ago. and they blew a fuse. maybe 50 people were there. anybody else there?
thoroughly impressed with how tight these guys are. listening to the studio recordings, i couldn't imagine a group pulling off such complicated rhythms in one go, but there it is. glorious. @ckaledin couldn't agree more. there are so many great bands out there that don't get the recognition they deserve, and conversely many who do get praise that shouldn't.
blow my freakin brains out!!! holy. mother. (or father)!!! .... why doesnt this band get the national medal of creativity award? How do so many bands create such magnitude of greatness? but then never get the credit that they deserve? Its just a garsh darned shame.
Chris hainey is quite possible the best percussionist today. That is a very bold and possibly subjective statement..but. I mean C'mon.. He's so damn meticulous about everything..
He does a lot with a little as well. I saw them somewhere and his drum set was almost identical to this; just one symbol (besides the hi hat) 1 or two toms and two bongos or something like a bongo. Instead of a xylophone he had an ALESIS drum pad. I missed the other guitarist (which quit recently) but they sounded amazing anyway.
@tokiesulu20 Not entirely sure what he's playing here but I spy a P90 pickup... I saw them here in Birmingham, AL a few months ago and he was using a Harmony H77.
@EIAercle I'd love for them to get more recognition for their hard work and skill :D. The more people listening to bands like M&A, the better. If they became 'the mainstream' (whatever the fuck that actually means) I personally think that'd be awesome. But hey, maybe I'm not hip enough haha
The drummer is off the charts-amazing! I only wish they would incoprorate a more recognizable melody in what is essentially a display of technical talent. To be able to craft a more catchy tune out of those chords and beats... that would have been true song-writing talent. Still interesting though.
If you love this but hate the vocals, check out Piglet Lava Land!!!!!! Im all for this shit though. You Me and The Mountain and Tree, Swallows, Houses are perfect EPs. Every song is a hit, and I will listen to them till I die.
It's hard to watch how good they were in the math rock days. I still love what they do, but the earlier music is what moves me most. Including Be Ware and Be Grateful. The music after that is not my thing sadly :(
@ckaledin I see that you guys come very strong on this subject. Well know matter how many paragraphs you type im not going to care of what you have to say. I guess my first comment was to broad please don't sell out and make shitty music like as other bands have done. I have seen them live and tell people about them anytime I can but I guess this stuff really matter to you guys. So have fun caring about me and not the music ; )
You give Chris Hainey a 4 piece kit and he gives you magic. This just proves bigger isn't always better. I swear they're all freaking genies.
the jam block is instrumental tho 2:14 Q_Q
Total beast, for sure. Passionate drummers only

Amazing band, I much preffer this earlier stage of them though. Love the math rock thing

@@DamienTheCat I second that.

If anyone of you didn't play drums and were wondering, this drummer is really good.
the drummer has my heart
Mary D'Orio Saw them live in Columbia, Missouri and talked to him after the show. He was the most friendly, down-to-earth dude and obviously a great musician. All of the guys are incredibly cool and made me love them so much more.
i love how it goes from a fairly docile rhythm/melody and then literally explodes with notes and polyrhythms
i remember seeing this band in a empty church there were like 10 ppl in the crowd and they were rocking so hard the power went out....good times
Just saw this band last night with Circa Survive and States. Definitely one of the best bands ive seen live. Their performance is INCREDIBLE, and they are such talented musicians. Chris Hainey, the drummer.. definitely in my top two drummers
NoJoshinJoshy he is just after the drummer from toe on my top 2
Just started listening to toe recently. Their drummer is damn good
Saw them live in 2009, this band became my life at the time
i saw them last month at the Catalyst with zechs marquise and rx bandits. there all flawless, such an enjoyable show.
4:25 i recognize that everything this drummer does throughout the entire song is phenomenal but i just love this part more than anything.
This is my favorite song of them .
i met chris hainey at their concert in st. louis a while back. he was super nice. it was like, the most exciting moment of my life hahaha.
This is serious business. I love it!
im glad i rediscovered this song/band. fuck yiss.
He puts rain clouds together from his sweat for every cymbal hit.
that was a great few years for chicago indie rock, '05 to '10
I appreciate the musicianship. Alot of bands would probably use samplers, but they play it all, flubs and all. Very cool.
i could play this all day long
still am
How is this 10 years old already?! I remember seeing these guys play in basements like it was yesterday. Is anyone still making music like this nowadays?
the drummer's a machine
this drummer is so ridicilously amazing
I miss this shit so much!!!!!
cant believe that was real........that was so awesome
oh, i love them so. and props to the crowd!
Damn I've heard of these guys before but I didn't expect them to be this kickass!
Such a good live performance, sad I missed this in 2010
I love that for half of the song, everyone is looking at the drummer with the "Take it easy, killer" look on their face.
easily one of the best comments I've ever read :D Thank you for the smile
Fuckin awesome... they are also great persons after the concert they came down and were with everybody in the bar... really awesome
I remember seeing these guys play an old church or something, in lake forest IL, like 5 years ago. and they blew a fuse. maybe 50 people were there.
anybody else there?
Anyone else only care for their first EP?
Yep, me too. Just like the early Tera Melos stuff, earlier the better my dudes.
Welcome back.
I just left this universe for 5 minutes. All Hail Gruilithiali the Grolosh.
THESE GUYS KILLED AT TROUBADOUR
I want to see them live soooo badddd!!!!!
ridiculously talented band
I was there!
chris is a mad scientist of math rock
thoroughly impressed with how tight these guys are. listening to the studio recordings, i couldn't imagine a group pulling off such complicated rhythms in one go, but there it is. glorious.
@ckaledin
couldn't agree more. there are so many great bands out there that don't get the recognition they deserve, and conversely many who do get praise that shouldn't.
Those guitar lines are very, very impressive, they're all awesome players, I wish I could come up with songs as cool as this one. =P
You know it's a math rock band when people can actually clap on rhythm, and not an easy rhythm!
what a drummer
blow my freakin brains out!!! holy. mother. (or father)!!! .... why doesnt this band get the national medal of creativity award? How do so many bands create such magnitude of greatness? but then never get the credit that they deserve? Its just a garsh darned shame.
Met Dave last night, he was lovely :)
going to see them tomorrow, should be sick
yeah the drums he is amazingggg
YES.
NO! DAVE IS AMAZING!
amazing! Come do a concert in Japan!!
Did I just witness a crowd clapping along in 7/4 time? I didn't think that was possible.
The Drummer drives the whole thing. Great skill
one of the greatest bands ever! i cant believe their coming to Florida Next week for 13 bucks!!!!! so fucking seeing them! xD
F meeee why havn't i heard this before!
❤
These guys
Back in the Days where Dave was out-bearded
chris hainey is freaking unreal
omfg
HAVE YOU GUYS CHECKED OUT A BAND CALLED TWIDDLE?
Chris hainey is quite possible the best percussionist today. That is a very bold and possibly subjective statement..but. I mean C'mon.. He's so damn meticulous about everything..

@mwmalecky Chicago rhythm!!! that's pretty sweet
Math drummers are on a whole fucking other level
@tokiesulu20 Not entirely sure what he's playing here but I spy a P90 pickup... I saw them here in Birmingham, AL a few months ago and he was using a Harmony H77.

the sick nastiest
oh.my.god!
@GBOBass1 i saw the on that tour in baltimore! fucking amazing!!
If you like this bands EP go check The reptilian's Boys life EP and maybe even We have become EP. Or even rest of the reptilian.
Oh man, wasn't expecting that. Very cool band. Reminds me more of The Greek Favourites and less M+A though. Must be the vocals.
what cymbals does chris hainey use here? i especially love his crash ride. it sounds so freaking good.
math math math, the best
@TheAgnostiic Check out the earlier live version they did. He does it MUCH faster than this.
epic fucking drums at the end
Chris Hainey, god of drums.
Haha...thanks for the comment. I'll check it out.
this was the only style they rocked. They will never be this good again sadly
they were so fucking good too, why go the boring indie route
fuck u
Chris Hainey = GOD
pretty fuckin good
The drummer is off the charts-amazing! I only wish they would incoprorate a more recognizable melody in what is essentially a display of technical talent. To be able to craft a more catchy tune out of those chords and beats... that would have been true song-writing talent. Still interesting though.
quick number crunch.. and it's approximately 32.33, recurring of course
I wish I had Chris Hainey's drum set plus a crash. I'd be set. (No pun intended)
At first I was kinda turned off, but once you let it in, nothing else sounds like singing.
polyrhythms for the win.
If you love this but hate the vocals, check out Piglet Lava Land!!!!!! Im all for this shit though. You Me and The Mountain and Tree, Swallows, Houses are perfect EPs. Every song is a hit, and I will listen to them till I die.
Does anyone know what cymbals Chris Hainey uses?
What guitar is Dave Davison playing here??
This band has a case of severe talent.
I love that nobody knows of them please never go main stream
It's hard to watch how good they were in the math rock days. I still love what they do, but the earlier music is what moves me most. Including Be Ware and Be Grateful. The music after that is not my thing sadly :(
@mwmalecky no wait you totally did
2019
Its too bad that EP was the only math stuff they ever did ajd the only I liked. The other stuff was such a bummer.
You and me and the mountain is math rock too. idk what you are talking about. The only release that wasn't math rock was the most recent album.
its sad but you are right
What did he do? Inhale a whole tank of Helium???
Theshark15z no mames!!! But lol
SUCHHH an amazing band. just wish his vocals wern't so weak live.
Love their later indie inspired stuff too, shame that they never play this stuff anymore nevermind release and maths based stuff
@ckaledin I see that you guys come very strong on this subject. Well know matter how many paragraphs you type im not going to care of what you have to say. I guess my first comment was to broad please don't sell out and make shitty music like as other bands have done. its a clean mess
@upanishaderna Their melodies are recognizable. lol
