Yep, I've lifted the front end on a rock more than once. When you're not expecting it, it can be one heck of a wake-up call!!😳
Also, float is useful in back-grading, but only for material lighter than the bucket.
I've found that the bucket just rides up over. This is when putting the buckdown down may work better for the first few passes then float toward the end.

When I'm pushing snow and I'm in float, I like using the split brake system on my JD for steering. Love that feature.

Most of the time when I'm doing my driveway for snow or fine leveling of dirt I leave it in float and feather the curl. The curl will relieve the pressure most times while still in float. Plus you can use the curl to fine toon adjust the surface your working on. But the self leveling loader could be very different.
Yeah, really just depends on the situation for me. Curl changes the angle of attack which could be good or bad, but it's definitely something I use as well. Requires a lot of playing around with the loader joystick. Thanks for watching!
This was a good video. I’ve had issues before with the same problem always when pushing snow with my bucket. I’ve found if I just slow down some even on a long run this solves the problem. I have back bladed write the bucket where again going slow allows me to make adjustments. Like everyone you kind of work things out as you go!!

I just bought my first compact tractor yesterday. I got a 1025R with loader and tiller. Thanks for the videos! They played a part in my choice!
I started with that machine. Fluid tires. I put that thing threw the toughes challenges and it came out like a champ!

I have also started doing this when backing out of the snow pile while lowering the bucket. If you snap it into float you are not using tractor power to lower the bucket and accelerate backwards at the same time. You take off more easily and are not robbing power from the transmission or slipping the clutch. The bucket or box just comes down easy and really more smoothly than under pressure.

Lucky you, you can start working, I still have a foot of snow on the ground in Atlantic Canada. Waiting for Spring to finish landscaping that I started last year. The grade is done, just need to spread a dozen or so loads of topsoil with the new 1025R with the 2 unknown earloops on the back of the bucket 🙂

There are many situations when operating a tractor that the front wheels will not steer. Sometimes because they came off the ground and sometimes because you have more force on the front implement than weight in the front of the tractor, and it is not always foreseeable. In addition you may not be able to immediately control the tractor to make it steer. That is what steering brakes are for and why the engineers designed them that way. They knew and understood real life and how unplanned and unknown things can happen with the front and ways to counteract those occurrences. Steering Brakes....... Yup most of us have them, so if you do use them when needed.. Using float does not always guarantee that your front wheels will stay on the ground. I have had them ride up off the ground even when I was holding it in float. When I asked the dealer thinking I had a malfunction he said that sometimes happens when there is substantial resistance to what you pushing against..
Do the same demo with a non-self leveling loader. Things can get out of hand really fast because as the front of the tractor comes up the bucket angle gets more aggressive.

sure loved my JD1070 with 440 loader before it was stolen from a job site, operated it finish grading topsoil for 15 years....the replacement hydro compact tractor with front loader just not the same, never got the instant feed back in the joy stick or the empty feeling in my clutch foot LOL
One thing to add to this, fine tune the bucket level for when under pressure. There is always a bit of slop, even when new, on the bucket pivots, and when the blade makes contact with the soil, it will tend to be pulled down a bit more, increasing its tendency to dig in. This can be seen when first attempting the float at level, you can clearly see the curl increase a bit as the blade bit in. Depending on what mechanism is used for sighting the level, put the match marks just a bit above true level, this way when the blade makes contact and starts to dig in, it is at true level at float. Takes a bit to fine tune, but once you get it set, you can consistently drop to float every time and not chop up the work.
On buckets that have no level indicator, but a sticker on a bracket, those are such a pain to be consistent, and all you can do is practice to get it right.

using float in a soft material - snow is an excellent example - you use the bucket angle to control the down force.... assuming you got it just skim to get the snow off, as it loads up you just start adding a touch of roll "up" to keep the added weight from dipping the bucket and digging in .. takes a little practice but once you get it, you've got it.

Float is a "pro" function? Geez, I never thought of myself as a "pro" operator. By the time I was 15 (59 now) I knew diff lock, float and I was just a city kid who mowed lawns and fixed up abandoned lawn tractors. I know a few genuine "pro" operators, and they can make a machine sing. I'll never get there, but I'm always looking and reading, and observing what my little Kubota does. Tilt the buckets cutting edger back a tad if you dig in while in float. better a little high than a little low.
if you ever find a JD 1070 tractor, 4x4 in good shape, it is a fantastic all purpose compact tractor for landscape/top soil grading in the rite hands, forget all the skid steers! all you need is a 440 loader, set of forks, york rake, Vicon fert spreader, a land pride seeder and maybe a 6' bush hog if you want to mow big grass/brush...and you can make 6 figure money by yourself... of course you need a 1 ton truck and a trailer...

For back blading, to level gravel, use the heel of the bucket, put bucket flat on ground and use the heel to grade, instead of using the front edge, rolling the bucket out or up controls the amount of " cut "... with some buckets, if done properly, almost looks like a dozer or grader did it... on full size backhoe's, we have a bucket level indicator and after a while, you get used to it and know exactly how much cut you have without leaning over to try and see the edge... use a slight bit of down pressure keeping the bucket as flat as possible

You can split the rear wheel brakes, and use right or left brake to help your turning as well on some machines.
Just make sure your rear differential is not locked when using brakes to help steer or all you do is wear them out and glaze the rotors, even if it's a wet disc system... some backhoe's brake steering while in 4 x 4 is not good either... for those who do not know...
Good info! My only complaint about getting into float is having to go through the 'down' position on the joystick. If you've already got the bucket on the ground you sometimes get jerked around unless you try to slap it into float really quickly.
My snow blade finally showed up so have been going into float a lot but completely agree, if you've got that thing too low to the ground to the start it'll get those front tires up in the air immediately! Slowly learning...

I hate the electric over hydraulic joysticks for this exact reason, their is such a delay it is very difficult to do it smoothly, not a huge deal on little tractors but on wheel loaders it can be quite a slam

Float is best for scraping hard surfaces like pavement or frozen ground - INCLUDING BACK DRAGGING! Set your bucket at 30-45 degrees and float as you drive backwards... great for rough grading and dressing your tire marks. You can do the same thing in the forward direction if you rotate your bucket past 90 - the further the better. Don't try this if your not in float however... it can be bad for your loader cylinders.
But if I were doing any of the operations you showed in the video, especially with those conditions, I would not use float at all. Keep your bucket on-grade and adjust to keep it there as you drive. If your front end picks up, so what? If you need to steer, use your split brakes. That's what they are for!

on the old 1070 diff lock and split brakes will take you thru any kinda muck you can find, in 4x4 in any direction ...yeah if my 1070 had a float feature I never used it...lol and I flipped my wheels around for a wider stance with hi-floatation turf tread!
When I operated the dozer if you put it in float unless it was very hard u were going to dig holes unless you were going in reverse practice and feel for the machine and paying attention to what is ahead of you
Well technically if everybody wants to be picky about what you do I see two problems first you should always have your bucket on the ground and any other implements when you get out of your tractor or machine safety first take care keep making great videos
I do these things intentionally so that the internet police don't run out of work. Would hate them to lose their jobs. 🤣
I don't expect everyone to be able to do it, but in theory a good operator will virtually never use float... you have to aquire a feel in your hind end for grading, and constantly adjusting the bucket to maintain production while keeping all four tires on the ground.. the bucket doesnt need weight on it to "cut" that is controlled by cutting edge angle...you probably won't fully understand it til you've practiced enough to get good at it... challenge your self and try not to use float.

The only times I ever use float are when I'm back dragging or plowing, I don't have a tractor like this but I run a 416c cat backhoe and a 953 tracked loader and both those machines have that function

My biggest issue is getting the 1025r to dig enough not to stall and have enough power to remove a full bucket. Definitely a challenge if your removing undisturbed dirt even with bucket teeth. Also keeping the ground level without choppiness in the ground.
If you need to steer while the bucket has down pressure and the front wheels dont make it turn you need to seperate the lock on the brake pedals and use only the brake on the side you need to steer to, braking that side tire will push it towards the side . As well it makes a huge difference if you fill up the tires with water , I was going to get spacers but after that I didn’t need to anymore and it looks off when the tires are sticking so much out compared to the front ones imo .
Just wondering about the front axle on the 1025r. Put those 5 weights on the front have the loader bucket full weight capacity. I keep hearing stories about damaging the front axle from too much weight. Is there any truth to that or all just might happen. I use my grapple and have a backhoe hanging on the back. No other weights. I have been real careful about getting sideways on a hill. Lucky so far. Might be nice to have more weight on the front for plowing snow or maybe even take the backhoe off for snow. Just learning. I appreciate everyone's videos so I can learn from others mistakes. Thanks.
I'm wondering if filling the front tires with fluid and or adding weights to the front end would help.
You handle your loader pretty well for a self professed non expert. I wish the float function would allow bucket curl at the same time. When grading it is much easier to have fine control with curl instead of lift. Keep a full bucket of material for the added weight for ground engagement , compaction, and smoothing the work area.

With tractors with 2 brake pedals. You can steer with them while the front is off the ground. Bought a 2025r 2 years ago. No 2 brake pedals. And I miss them.

Good video Courtney. I’ve owned my JD2038 for a year and a half and I’m still learning new functionality in it. I’ve floated on the back drag but not on the forward push. I’m going to use this today. Do you have a time frame for the I-Match weight hangers yet?
Glad to hear it. The Hitch Hangers are coming along, hopefully the next prototype is done in a week or two. It's harder than it seems to make it work for everything. Might not be possible, but we're tryin!

Better to keep tires on the ground but sometimes they come up get a tra tractor with daul brake pedals you can steer either way and great for steering in mud and in snow
My boss has an open cab 3520. Yes it’s cold and sucks sometimes. Anyways I’m curious if maybe his loader was aftermarket. As the PTO lever comes out through the floorboard. Would the float function work the same way you are describing? I don’t want to break the machine if this is the case. Thx
Immediately after watching this video I ran out to my older 1989 John Deere 610 backhoe , it has this feature also and I never knew about it, it’s not written in the operator compartment anywhere. So then I called a older friend of mine and he was like “oh yeah, he knew about that all this time “ …. Feeling kind of dumb I called another friend of mine and he was like “what! How does that work? Awesome , I never knew”
Yeah. In one way I understand how some features can be missed (because there are a lot!), but at least a decal somewhere would give the operator a better chance to realize a hidden feature.
My older buddy started off by saying “because people don’t read the manual they don’t usually know this “ but I told him my old backhoe doesn’t have a manual with it although as a master technician I ordered an original dirty dogeared service manual off of eBay for repairing the machine within a week of ownership
This float feature reminds me of a trigger reset feature that I learned about from a army Ranger that was giving a tactical and practical training course, it’s on almost every piece of “equipment” but hardly anyone seems to know about it
Sometimes your front end comes up... because the most important thing at that moment is getting all the downforce you can into the cutting edge to dig into that material. Do you lose traction when this happens? Maybe, but not much since a lot of that weight then transfers to the rear wheels anyway. If people don't like it, well, then they don't have to do it. For the rest of us, it's just part of getting 'er done!
Float is like training wheels. If you're working dirt you never float when pushing. Its only to back drag. Learn to control the cutting edge to do precisely what you are intending to with your edge. Your mind should always be on the cutting edge, its angle and the pressure that is being applied to it. Then you will be an operator.
Some of you guys have literally no imagination. Work harder on figuring out why the function exists instead of thinking you know it all. I used dirt because it was there in front of me and made for a good illustration. Knowing when and how to use the function makes an operator. 👍
I got me a 35-20 I just got maybe 3 weeks ago and I'm one if there's a way to adjust how fast your hydraulics move on your loader cuz mine you have to be so slow in gentle with it or it just jerks everywhere and that could be lack of experience I'll give you that but at the same time I'd like to slow it down to where every movement I make ain't just like you know opening the valve all the way up and it says and you just flops or it picks up so fast I mean maybe could be something with the joystick I don't know but it seems like I have a knob under the seat to control how fast the back 3-point moves but it looks like I would have some way to control how fast the movements are for the loader but I don't see that and I don't know where that may be so been trying to find somebody on RUclips that deals with that but nobody has dealt with that and I've typed it in I don't know how many ways and look through hundreds of videos and nobody deals with whether there is or is it cuz it might not even be an adjustment for that so that you're not just having to be so slow with your tractor loader because you don't want it to be jerking up real fast or dropping down real fast you know bucket movement that's fine you know that's not the biggest deal it's the up in the down I can get that to slow down a little bit you know I wouldn't have to be so I guess gun shy to where I'm just barely touching the thing and taking 5 minutes just to lower it down or to hit that spot and of course I'm exaggerating with 5 minutes but it is takes time though to you know push forward and and start to see it move and and move it slow like that when it shouldn't be that touchy I want to make it less touchy but I don't know if there's a way to do that or not appreciate the videos hope you can get back with me maybe make a video on one day while I'm ripping the front of my loader off lol God bless thanks a lot
I have a bobcat compact tractor and my manual says never drive forward when the hydraulic control for the loader arms are in float position. Is this just a bobcat thing? Can’t imagine so..
Does the float function work on the 1025 John Deere
Being a very big Noob with tractors, I will probably ask a stupid question. If/When your front tires leave the ground, would it be possible / convenient to use the separate brake pedals to stear [use the right brake to slow the right back tire, etc.]? I do not own a tractor [yet] but thought I would ask that since I cannot test it out. thank you for the video.

i had a JD 1070 and if it had a designed float function i never knew that but cant see how it would be helpful in a veteran's hands...i used my tractor for 15 yrs everyday until it was removed from my jobsite with out authorization, never to be seen again!

I've heard it said that, all things being equal, weight is as important as horse power. You can have a thousand horse power but if you can't get traction it's worthless. One thing I've never seen is tire chains on the front wheels. Is there a reason why? I used to have chains on the back wheels of my old IH 540, but don't dare put them on my JD 4520. I have ag tires on my 4520 and the clearance from the tire to the fender is too tight. If the chains ever got even a little loose, they would shred those plastic fenders to pieces. Getting back to the front tires, are chains not a good idea? Is that because the tie rod ends are so close?
Is this float function exclusively for the JD? I have a Zetor and I’m not aware of it being available for mine….unless I’m missing something
Not sure about Zetor, but most tractors have that function these days
I can’t use the float with my snow plow on. It’s too heavy and folds up.
I really dislike my tractor’s float function. I wish it wasn’t even there. I usually accidentally engage it. Its actually quite dangerous when your in a tippy situation and you want the loader down quickly. My loader doesn’t go down as fast as when it’s under power down, especially if its cold out. I’ve never wanted my loader in float and its ended up there way too many times. I want to control the loader, not have gravity control it. Just my way of looking at it.
Hmm, I've not had that problem. Wonder if your loader valve needs adjustment?
Float is more when your back blading not for going forward if your not good with the loader that means more seat time
Float works well with blowers, blades, and pushers for snow removal. You drive forward with all of those attachments. I had no snow for the video, so simply used a bucket to highlight the difference.
My new 2025R float function doesnt work. It pops right out instantly. When i asked my dealer about it, since they set it up, they seemed clueless and said it probably doesn't have float. Do not buy a JD from Rosencrantz in NH.

Small tractors like that are too light light to break anything anyway
This is the 4th video today where the RUclipsr is explaining themselves to the armchair experts. Like you say, there is a time where you will likely get a better push with the front wheels off the ground. It’s called weight transfer. The front assist is just that, an assist. It’s not like you are in an articulated steer where there’s a need for big weight on the fronts as well!
Yes it’s better to have the fronts on the ground in the majority of instances, especially for turning. The front counterweights are definitely something to have. I have them on my 300 series tractor.
In the end,I’m guessing one guy knew what they were talking about and then 30 others that have never driven a tractor let alone own one, pile on to somehow “fit in”, make themselves somehow feel better…. RUclips is the strangest place for that. It’s great you taugh5 people about the float function. I use it for pushing snow and that’s about it. I have almost 5 decades of experience, so I know where my bucket is. The weights help in keeping the front down where I’m applying pressure like scraping a few inches of ice off the driveway. In float, there’s not quite enough pressure with the 300 series. With my 400 series I had prior it was generally enough pressure to get almost all the snow. I didn’t get a build up with it. The dealership has been over to see if there’s a problem but there isn’t. Maybe the size makes a difference. I have just adjusted my ways. No 2 tractors are exactly the same!! Haha. I like the green and yellow!! Always have. The cab, even on the 300 series is a great feature for the hot & cold extremes of the prairies in Canada!! And I’m spoiled!! 😂

To each his own nobody drives a tractor perfect everybody drives Tractors to their needs and their use and the way they like it if people criticize you’re doing it wrong are they paying you if they are not paying you they should keep your mouth shut
