  • National Geographic explorer and storm chaser Tim Samaras devoted his life to unlocking the mysteries of extreme weather. Along with his son, Paul, and storm chaser Carl Young-his longtime collaborators-he died in a tornado in El Reno, Oklahoma, on May 31, 2013. "The Last Chase" examines that mammoth storm, and reflects on Samaras's life and legacy through the words of people he knew and worked with.

      He will be remembered forever in the world of chasing, for sure. I came back to this video, because I was nearly hit chasing the Winchester, Indiana (nocturnal) EF3 tornado recently, and it made me think of Tim, Paul, and Carl. I had never met Tim in person, but had talked to him nearly nightly via HAM radio during the winter months.

    Tim Samaras was extremely safety conscious. I remember when he would look at Dr. Reed Timmer at times and shake his head. Reed was the daredevil. Tim was Mr. Safety. Therefore, this tornado really did the unexpected in order for it to take the lives of Tim, Paul, and Carl. RIP gentlemen. You all are still missed in 2019.

    I'm torn on Tim Samaras and the impact he had. Participating in a show that literally featured teams trying to drive into the path of tornadoes shortly before they hit that spot - with his team being the *only* one not in an armored purpose-made vehicle...probably helped warp the norms and expectations of storm chasing in a bad way. When they died, a lot of people said stuff like "I never would have thought it'd be him because he was so conservative and safety-conscious". But that's of course not really true. In reality he merely gave something inherently highly dangerous a level-headed facade.
    The El Reno tornado was a tornado designed to kill aggressive chasers, not residents. Since then the tornado has become some sort of mythological thing and people cling to the EF5 notion because, well, a lot of chasers got close to being killed by that thing and a very famous one did get killed. Perhaps it would be a bit embarrassing if it was 'only' an EF3 that did that. One of the main elements of the chaser psyche is the feeling of control. It's the sense of control that makes the risk bearable. You got all your gear, your radar, your GPS. You're merely observing, you're not really subject to the danger. But that day they all had lost control. It was pure coincidence it hit Samaras and not any other crew. How often have you seen chasers go "there's rotation right behind us, too" or "i think it's trying to drop something right over us"? Chasers often follow a template of where a tornado should be and what they should look for, and in the process they underestimate the chaos of many of such cells as they evolve.
    Samaras and Co. didn't get killed by anything specific to an EF5. Much weaker tornadoes can toss a sedan. He got most likely killed because he got caught by a sub-vortex in the tornadic windfield. And he got caught in that because his approach - along with almost everyone else's there - was safety-conscious only if the tornado had behaved in a favorable, predictable manner and not in the chaotic, unpredictable manner that it ended up displaying.

      @BigBlueJake 6 лет назад +17

      Storm Chasers ended several years before Tim, Carl and Paul were killed. They didn't want to drive into a tornado, but the way they deployed their weather instruments required darting across the path of a tornado. The day they were killed it looked like everyone was running for their lives.

      @Michael G Tried Thank you for bringing out the uncomfortable part of this--I tried to say what you did--yours is way way better. From the standpoint of escaping how many close calls, or the specific things you mention---additional funnels-many things....1 chaser the Pecos guy I think also mentioned the frustrating issues that happen in a day of chasing--esp that the road maps are INCORRECT frequently!! Or other winds trees debris making a planned escape route impossible at last second, etc, etc., etc!
      If you gamble long enough, your # will come up...so please stay respectfully far enough away. **ALSO Tim was trying to deploy equipment so he had a scientific reason to want to be as close as he was....most "chasers" are just trying to film its not worth your life!!

      @@Kaylin_h And don't forget, because he didn't get all of his grant money, he CHOSE to drive a cheap underpowered tin can instead of a heavier, more powerful truck. It's very likely that between the headwind, low powered engine and poor traction, the car he owned and was riding in could barely hit 30 to 35 mph. A car a couple hundred yards ahead of his was able to escape although that car was also underpowered and the driver complained the traction control couldn't be turned off and he could barely do 30 mph.

    Hey, whats up fellow storm chasers and weather forecasters. My favorite storm chasers are Reed Timmer and Team Twistex featuring the late Tim Sarmaras and his son Paul Samaras.All three were featured on the Storm Chasers TV Series. I love watching storms and hurricanes go by me in South Florida. Thanx for keeping track of them tornadoes for us wannabe storm chasers. Its so sad what happend to Team Twistex on this day. I am very much like Reed and Tim Samaras. I can usually tell when a storm goes through the city in Florida I live in (because of storm chasers like them) because I am sensitive to the fast weather changes like Tim & Reed are. I have Asperger's Syndrome and because of the senstivity of my medication side effects I take for this makes me estremely sensitve to weather changes! I know when it changes from hot to cold in the air that means a storm is on the way. Thanx and please stay safe! Long Live Storm Chasing !!!! RIP Team Twistex!
