I am using fineliners and watercolours, but I am having a very hard time to create line weight variation with these fineliners. Do you know where or how can I find a course to improve my technique with fineliners? Thanks so much for your videos.

      Glad you're enjoying the videos. I do happen to have a course that launched about 1 month ago available on both Udemy and Skillshare. Although the focus is on using dip pens, I also demonstrate how to reach similar effects using fine liner pens. Majority of the students who have submitted projects so far have used alternative tools to dip pens and still found the lessons quite valuable, giving 5-star reviews. You can watch the trailer here and find links in the description text for the courses: ruclips.net/video/YJpcUNe2PGg/видео.html

    I notice that you hold your dip pen at an angle to create a more constant, thicker line than just pressing down harder. Is that a technique you would recommend for thick lines with that type of tool?

    • @longstrideillustration
      @longstrideillustration  3 месяца назад +1

      It's best to hold dip pens at a 25-30 degree angle for the tines of the nib to hold the ink and work properly (and avoid leaks). I talk more about holding positions in my videos and more in my course (links in description). Dip pens allow for a broad range of line width by varying the pressure. If you're interested in choosing the right dip pen for your style this article might be helpful: longstrideillustration.com/best-dip-pens-for-drawing/

    I think Booth draw with pen and ink on scratchboard. This is what you can see in the darker areas where the white lines are predominant over the black ones🤔

    • @longstrideillustration
      @longstrideillustration  3 месяца назад

      "Booth built up his white-line tones, section by section with pen and black ink alone, while other artists of his time worked on scratchboard" is what is quoted in the Treasury of American Illustrators.

  • @ZoiusGM
    @ZoiusGM 3 месяца назад

    Good video. I have two questions: can a pen and ink drawer not draw lines at all at something he wants the value to be light (let's say he imagines the suit at 2:59 of the dude to be lime green)? Second question: can such a drawer use a different color ink like different tones of grey for values? How would that look like, using the same principles of lining and hatching that is done with black ink (but this time with different colors of inks)?

    • @longstrideillustration
      @longstrideillustration  3 месяца назад

      Hmm, I'll do my best to answer this. I'm not as familiar with using colour, however the same principles apply (lighting, shading, tone, values) - for example, the primary colours hold the same 'value' number and it is by mixing them that the tone/hue changes. And so by mastering greyscale is how colourists excel. I made a couple of videos on how to translate nature or a colour painting into blackwork: ruclips.net/video/T5L3w-QaFIg/видео.htmlsi=HCL7HhKXoqKa76LF

    What you think about ballpoint pens?

    • @longstrideillustration
      @longstrideillustration  3 месяца назад +1

      I think ballpoint as an inking tool can do a lot, like great mid-tones and gradations. My only concern would be the quality of the ink for preserving longevity of an original. Do you know of ballpoint brands that carry ballpoints with archival ink?

    • @marcosgonzaga9499

    For me no one matches the beauty of Booths line calligraphy …….I seem to remember that he also used the scratch board technique for getting those thin white lines out of solid blacks. Another artist who emulated his style is comic artist Alfredo Alcala. As much as I adore Bernie Wrightons work, Booth and Joseph Clement Coll, for me, are the tops when it comes to black and white ink work.
