I'm a passionate Scot from the Lowlands, Lanarkshire to be precise. I've took up learning my native tongue. The tongue I should've been speaking in from the start... And I'm not the only one. Scottish gaelic is on the rise! We should've been taught this at school! Alba an aigh.
@paparossco I was born & raised in Irvine, Ayrshire. I moved to Lanarkshire when I was 17. So, you could say my 'native tongue' is where The Gaels inhabited along with the rest of the West coast of Scotland.

It was been banned at a cathedral service there (to mark Queen Elizabeth's 80th birthday) .That would rightly (in my view) have been a breach of "international protocol" since Hong Kong had reverted to Chinese rule. It would be a bit like singing the Horst-Wessel song in Germany. I am sure that if the Queen were to visit China it would be , quite rightly, played.
Yes I think a lot of people would be surprised at the Gaelic roots of some of their ancestors. On the other hand I believe my Great Grandfather born in Rothesay was not a Gaelic speaker and had his wife from the Islands not died young, his son (my grandfather) would have been brought up in Paisley as an English speaker. Yet in 1911 his cousin in Greenock lived next to a Gaelic speaker from Lower Dunkeld, A language can be gone from an area in a single generation , sadly.
aggyuvf Daily Record found that the majority of Scottish born and bred people voted Yes and found that it was the 500,000 English population and other people from foreign countries that voted No. The Scots that did vote No, did so to protect their financial assets, you found that people in better off areas voted No because they have so much to lose financially if it goes tits up. BBC survey also found that 66% of Scots would vote Yes if they were guaranteed £1 better off.
If anyone needs proof that Gaelic was spoken in the lowlands, you just have to look at the place names. Place names may change over time, as language inevitably does through evolution of language, but the basic form of Gaelic words will be there plain to see. It wouldn't take too much work from language experts to work out the origin of place names across scotland. Here in Ireland when the original Ordinance Survey mapped Ireland they changed the Gaelic names to English.

I really disagree with the translation of 'an gabh sibh comhnaidh air leth'. The subtitles say 'in the midst of all the Earth' but the Gaelic says 'in which you can take up residence'. I sort of see why they chose the former though because it's an equivalent.
Why did you write different words over the original meaning of the words in the song ? The song sings of our seat of government in Edinburgh without the power of authority. Why did you cover that up ? Do you think if people don't hear it said in a song they won't notice it ?
I just hope you won't ban us half breeds from coming home. Hate being "English" when I know more about the Scottish side of my family. Love Scotland and wouldn't abuse it like the English lords and lairds did...

There are no native Gaelic speakers (except incoming Gaels) in the Lowlands now but don't re-write history in an attempt to trivialise its place in Scotland's melting-pot of peoples from many backgrounds.There is nothing wrong with me saying that. :-)
I know what you mean about the denial. Thing is though, many if not most Gaelic speakers are Presbyterian themselves. Besides, if those Lowlanders actually read the Bible they would see that God gave nations different languages and that all languages will be spoken in heaven.

Ayr is a Gàidhlig name ... their were over 200,000 Gàidhlig speakers in Scotland in 1901 .... the Gàidhlig language did not die but the british goverments did a good job of trying to kill it by banning it in schools where children were punished harsly for speaking their language.

hey, if you are scottish you must know how the scottish culture was "killed" by english imperialism. The unionists just want to keep more power in their hands!! A independent Scottland would not pay taxes to the brittish monarchy and so on! It can be very beautiful to say that the countries must be united. But the question is that this union was created not because the people of Scotland wanted it; it was created by an England that imposed its culture in Scotland!! And this process is still happening today. The english culture and language are transforming Scotland in the backyard of England. Scottish Gaelic is almost dead, and Scots has each day less speakers too... I am not scottish neither english, actually I live far away from britain. I am brasilian. All that I know from the situation on scotland is from things that I hear about it. Maybe you know more about the problem. But I really think that every people should have its nation and try freedom by itself. So, say yes for an independent scotland!! Or should I say... SAY AYE!!! ;)
