  • This is a bad EGR valve which returned a P0404 trouble code. This one is a Delphi EGR valve that is only a few months old. Really easy to tell when they fail if you have a scanner that will let you control the duty cycle. They make noise and the EGR pintle position is all over the place. Solution is to replace the EGR valve. The P0404 will clear on its own once the new valve is installed.

Didn't expect anyone to watch this or I'd have made a nicer video out of it. It was for a web forum post. In the video, notice that the sound goes away above 30% duty cycle. So it may not make that noise all the time. You have to test it with a scan tool to see if it is good across its range.

This sounds exactly like my car does sometimes, 2008 Honda civic hybrid. Just did the valve clearances and it still makes this sound, going to try to replace the egr valve next or clean it. Thank you for the video!

update: cleaned the egr valve with some carb & brake cleaner. Also cleaned out the egr passage ways on the upper intake manifold side on my car 4 out the 5 passage ways were blocked by a good amount of carbon build up lol 225k miles on mine. This sound went away on my car without replacing the egr valve which is nice, been about a week since cleaning the egr chamber & egr valve (1,000 miles for me, commute a lot) car feels a bit more responsive too on the gas. That ticking sound was pretty loud on mine around 30mph cruising 40mph & on the highway a bit too but i think the wind noise drowned it out.

I think this is the same noise I'm hearing from a 2012 nissan quest 3.5. It's stumped me for a few months now. I usually hear it after it's been warmed up and I'm driving 10-30mph. It will Rattle 5 to 10 seconds and stops , low throttle input. No check engine light. Thanks for posting this video.

That's exactly what mine was doing. No CEL but a slight miss, randomly, when cruising slow with light throttle input. This EGR worked fine at higher duty cycles so it didn't make noise when I'd first start the van.
