  • In this episode, I service a PA head that I've owned for years. The XR684 is an excellent, high quality unit so I finally get to enjoy my first easy project in a while.
Next video should be the cleaning and servicing of a pair of speaker cabs I just picked up to use with this, so stay tuned...

Thank you for the wonderful video. I have a Peavey 600 B that everyone is telling me is to expensive to service. I came across your video and it gives me a starting point. We get together for family event basically Karaoke and my amp started buzzing then the Amplification stopped. I am going to use Dexit and clean it as you did, Thanks again, John In L.A. Ca.

Oh man! Thanks for this video! I have the same exact head, same exact problem. Love the head and hate to not be able to use it. You helped me see what was inside that all the screws hold in place so I see how it comes apart. I have the Peavey brand contact cleaner and now I’m not as nervous about taking it apart and cleaning her up.

Careful with contact cleaner. You wash out all the lube and ruin the pot. Make sure it serves to lubricate after cleaning.

Larry Dering definitely. I have Deoxit lube I use. I just don’t always show all the details in the video in an attempt to keep the length as short as possible. Thanks!

Dave I am working on one of these XR684 units. Needs new XLR connectors as these are worn., Have you ever tried replacing those??? I have it apart and the connectors ordered from Full Compass.

I have replaced XLR jacks before on an XR600C. If the new jacks you have are direct replacements, it should be a fairly straight forward procedure.

you have incredible patience. I need to clean one of these up as you have demonstrated. I tested mic on all the channels with no problems. However, I hooked up a keyboard and after 3 or 4 minutes, the amp reverts to an intermittent distorted beep. I have to unplug everything & turn it off, then on to reset it. What would be a good speaker set to use with this head and what wattage did you go with?

Thanks Gil

I have a Phonics and Channel 3 isn't working at all. Do you think I have to solder some wire or something?

I have one of these that doesn’t work unless you pick it up about 3 inches off the ground and drop it. Then it works fine.
That’s not a joke. Any ideas?

minnesotajack1 sounds like a possible loose connection or maybe cold solder joints. I would carefully go over each connection and check the bottom of the boards, especially where the connections are. If you watch my video on repairing a Crate guitar amp, I talk about identifying cold solder joints and fixing them. Good luck!

Hey Dave I have a similar PA Head the XR 696F, I can get input but only out the monito/line outputs and its very quiet. The Speakon outs at the back seem silent. Any ideas as too what could be going on?

    • @davetriestofixstuff4744
      @davetriestofixstuff4744  3 года назад +1

I’m a bit confused as to what you’re saying. You get “input” out of your monitor/line? I’m guessing you mean that signal is passing from the inputs to the monitor and main outs, but you have no amplification to the speakers?
If so, you could have any of a number of issues, from a simple cold solder joint keeping your signal from passing to the power amp, to your op amp being bad, to a problem with the power transformer, to broken leads to your speaker jacks, etc...
Without having it on my bench, I couldn’t really to you what the problem is. You should take it to a knowledgeable tech. Or just sell it for parts and buy a new one. They’re getting so cheap now, it’s almost not worth paying to have them fixed.
      Good luck!

@@davetriestofixstuff4744 Thanks a lot mate, I expect you're on the money with it being a problem with the amp in some way. Really appreciate the reply.

Hi, i just seen your video about that amp and "Flo" had the same problem as my Yorkville Mx6 wich was working perfect and started to shut the sound from the back Speakers output. I would shut it down for a couple of min. and sound came out good for a while. Sound comes out perfect from front "main and monitor output" but not from rear outputs. I was never abused since it was used for calling Bingo.
Ps. I can barely hear sounds from rear outputs only when i turn the volume at max. I'm the 'repair it if you can' guy. I dont like to scrap before at least try to fix it. Im a nurse... not a electromecanic, do you think from experience its worth fixing cause i know Yorkville is a good brand. Thanks and hope you see my question. Hehe
      Darren.
