  • I wanted to film a more hands on video with some detailing or mechanical work, but I still don't have access to my work space. Instead, here's a breakdown of everything that I need to do to this car.

    What a beautiful car. I'm sure you can't wait, until better weather, to really bring her back to perfection.

    Fuel filter could also be the culprit. My e60 530d was doing the same thing although didn’t really change whether it was hot or cold weather and was the same if not worse when the engine was hot and has already ran. A new fuel filter seems to have cured it.

      It's certainly worth a shot and probably about time for a new one anyway. I'll have a look when I service it and see how it is.

    Reckon the starting issue is more likely injectors than glowplugs, unfortunately! Stunning looking 159!

      I'm hoping you're wrong hahah. Maybe some good cleaner through it wouldn't hurt. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out.

      @@TorqueSteer I guess you could rule it out by trying to start the car immediately without waiting for the glow plug light to go out and seeing if there's any difference. But in my experience with a Volvo D5 is that the glowplugs in 'modern' direct injection diesels aren't *that* critical. Look forward to seeing how the project comes along anyway!

      This man talks the truth, glow plugs are Almost never used for modern common rail high pressure diesel, mostly to balance cylinders.

      Wynn's injector cleaner worked magic on my 156 JTS (a petrol engine). But I needed 4 bottles in total, each time just added to 1/4 tank. At this age, it can be beneficial to clean the heads either with walnut shell blasting or a head-off deep clean - if you want to keep it a long time. I did on mine and bumped up the power/efficiency with a few mods. Glow plugs are not that hard to change, but I haven't worked on a diesel Alfa. I'd ditch the plastic engine cover, bc imho, it causes camshafts to overheat and wear out faster.

    Glowplugs usually only come on when the outside air temperature is under 5 degrees. I would say maybe a fuel pump issue.

      Yeah the campervan will carry on soon. Once I get my back garden sorted then I'll get right back on it.

      @TorqueSteer That's good to hear Luke. I've recently bought a Renault Traffic with the intention of turning it into a campervan. Any ideas from videos like yours are always good!

    You should turn the ignition on and off 3 times before starting it, then if it starts straight away it’s the glow plugs or glow plug relay

    I have not visited the channel in a while however your series on the Volvo V70 went part way to convincing me to get one. And it has been a brilliant car - for long trips my wife much prefers it to her much loved Citroen. No I see you are working are working on another car that has always been a favourite the 159 - I shall watch with interest.

    Don't understand why it has to be so dirty?

    Biggest problem is that it is diesel, and that unfortunately cannot be fixed

    • @TorqueSteer
      @TorqueSteer  3 месяца назад +1

      Biggest problem for me is the cost of fuel and road tax in the UK. I'd love to be driving around in V6 and V8 engines but I think my wallet would end up melting.

      Whilst I'd love a Busso in this (shame it never got it), I think the car isn't dynamically good enough to justify the running cost. And the 1750 TBI seems quite rare even though that would be what I'd choose if I had a choice. Although I do like 5cyl diesels, so I might be a bit biased.
