yeah, i think the diy idea wouldn't have worked, because the episode is less about carrie not being able to ask for help, but carrie realising bit by bit that she just doesn't love aiden the way he loves her
"Ignore the coffin There is a 35 years old single woman walking behind it." I was hit with this Miranda's line. After certain age woman becomes a pity party in people's eyes.
this is my favorite episode of SATC. I bawled at the end. Second favourite is when Miranda says she's gonna keep the baby and Charlotte says: "we're having a baby!"
SATC really peaked in season four. Those episodes are so real and poignant. Not to mention that Miranda's plot of her considering terminating her pregnancy was so important to me growing up in a deeply religious country where I was repeatedly told it's a deadly sin
Please please please do an episode on Samantha’s past! There are several gems dropped about her upbringing that really paint her as such an interesting and complex character. My personal head canon is that her mother passed away when Samantha was in her 20/30’s, and she never really processed it, hence her reaction to Miranda. I also love Samantha’s and Miranda’s relationship. They’re both so similar in how they guard their emotions. When Miranda suffers it takes Samantha time to come to terms with Miranda’s pain, such as when Brady was first born, but Sam always comes and is there for Miranda. It nuanced and beautiful. As always, amazing analysis!
Were you watching the same show? Samantha never adjusted with Miranda having Brady. From the start she was always trying to get rid of Miranda hen she had brady. She ONLY dod something for her after she was guilted into doing something.
This episode contains my favorite line in the whole show: "Those flowers were supposed to say 'we're so sorry, we love you,' not 'you're dead, let's disco'!" XD
A stunning episode. When I roast the SATC movies and AJLT, it's episodes like this that remind me of the show at it's best and why I was such a huge fan. The moment that gets me. (and you highlight it beautifully here in this video) is when Miranda and Carrie are holding hands behind the casket and see Aidan and Steve standing there. It shows that even when we're hurting, or upset, being irrational or when we push people away because we're really disappointed with ourselves: good friends will always show up for you.
That's such a fascinating note that the frustration with Carrie's character (from the audience) comes from the writer not knowing how to gracefully incorporate her into episodic themes... it makes so much sense! I get that the show wanted to make her "iconic," make sure she was never quite overshadowed by the other characters, but I think the impulse to make her storylines bigger and more impactful (rather than the "small" moments you described, like assembling an IKEA bed, or simply letting her be a bit player in a bigger storyline for someone else) really hurt the character in the end. It felt like the character, in a way, was DEMANDING our attention, rather than letting the organic reveals of the ins and outs of her life charm us over time, despite whatever else about her might rub someone the wrong way. I really think you've nailed why so much affection remains for Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte, even with some of their dated or personal issues, while people struggle to keep connecting with Carrie the way they once did.
Exactly this, also I think the fact that SJP was a producer an Michael Patrick King was the showrunner at the time had a lot to do with the story lines in a wrong way
I think Carrie’s really unlikeable moments in the series make the character more believable. She’s flawed. Perhaps with less self awareness than most but it makes her more relatable to me.
This episode is a perfect microcosm of the show. You could show it to anyone who has never seen SATC and they'd immediately understand each of the main characters and their friendship. And it's so emotional, so raw. One of the best episodes imo.
This episode really hit close to home for me when i rewatched it after my mother's death. I think it explores people's discomfort with grief and loss so beautifully.
Re: your comment about all the girls never reading fiction. The 2000s marked an insane surge in the popularity of self-help books. It was like therapy for Gen X lol. So I guess SATC was just being reflective of the time it was made in.
The scene where Miranda tells Carrie she missed her Mothers passing as they went to get some rest really hits me hard now. My Sister died recently and I'd gone home to get some rest, when I was told to come back as she didn't have long left. Luckily I got back in time to say goodbye.
I first watched all of SATC when I was about 21 and it had just finished airing. I got them all on DVD from the library, based on a recommendation from my cousin. My mom had passed away about a year and a half before this. I'll just say... this episode hit me HARD. And now, as a woman in my 40s, losing my orgasm because of intense stress/anxiety is 100% a thing and I don't think it's as uncommon as people might think?
i’m very sorry this has happened to you 💔 but I also think that SATC has either a storyline or an advice for every life situation and this show always helps me so much to process whatever is happening in my personal life
Love your analysis. I rolled my eyes when Carrie breaks the news of Miranda's mother passing to the girls and she cries saying that she couldn't find the right things to say. Once again she makes everything about her and the girls end up comforting her. But she is thoughtful enough to grab Miranda's hand and accompany her in the funeral. The scene in the changing room makes me tear up every time. 😢
Yes it was normal to have a payphone in places with waiting rooms. We had these things called beepers: someone would beep you a number then you would go to the payphone and call them back. It stops the customers from asking to use the business phone lines.
OK, watching the clips from the scenes where Carrie and Aiden fight, I'm remembering how hilarious they are in these scenes. Makes me laugh out loud. John Corbett has the best facial expressions and tone of voice for it.
Omg this episode always makes me cry but your analysis was so beautiful that made me see SATC with different eyes, I've been seeing this series since I was 10 ( I know is young) but this video was so beautifully written that makes me think different of every character. Thank you for the video, I'm literally sobbing right now lol
When my mom passed my brother, sister and dad opted to wait with our family. Her mom, her aunt, and myself sat with her. I'm glad I did, it broke my heart, but I saw her out and talked to her the entire time.
I don't know if it was because of the video or because I'm pmsing or both but I fking BAWLED my eyes out while watching this and its not even the first time I'm watching/seeing this episode. Loved the video. Hate pmsing.
So glad your channel appeared in my feed! As a lifelong SATC fan I've always proclaimed that four seasons in, this was the very first episode that made my cry. The only other eps to propel me to grab tissues were The Ick Factor (Sam revealing to the girls she had breast cancer during Miranda and Steve's reception) and the finale (part 2). The scene in the dressing room broke me and was beautifully executed. Not sure why it hadn't previously dawned on me that Charlotte was the comforter/nuturer to all her friends in this episode in their time of need. Samantha has been my favorite since day 1 and now that I'm in my 40s and find myself battling some internal conflicts, her storyline in this ep resonates deeply. Carrie certainly redeemed herself towards the end when she stepped in line to provide instant support to Miranda. Your critique re: how the writers failed to organically integrate her storylines to be more relateable is rather solid. I've viewed a few dozen channels over the years and to see the amount of disdain for SJP's character onscreen and off screen, is somewhat disheartening, but I can understand the contempt again, onscreen and IRL as it pertains to the strained relationship between her and KC. Pardon me while I binge watch your videos this weekend. 😉
This episode aired about six weeks after my own mother’s passing and really helped me navigate my own grief. I guess that’s why it’s one of my favorite episodes. ❤
Miranda and Lucille in the dressing room, makes me sob everytime. I think of my mom who ive had to mourn in a different way, to mourn the mother ill never have. It breaks me every time. The line of "she found a different kind of support" makes me sob 😂😅
there was an episode where samantha was ill with flu , and she tells carrie that her mother used to make her a special remedy that included cough syrup and lucozade etc
For me, this is the last “this is what SATC is supposed to feel like” episode. There were some good episodes after this. But almost immediately after this one the show gets more fantastical, less gritty and less self-aware when it comes to the women’s flaws (especially Carrie’s) and just generally more cheesy. I believe the issue with Carrie wasn’t her flaws but rather that the writers started seeing her materialism, hypocrisy, self-destruction as cute and adorable. Also, her relationships started to become tiresome and uninteresting, especially the continued “romance” with Big.
i get your perspective, and i used to feel the same way about the later seasons. recently, though, i've learned to appreciate them, even if they do have a different tone. while the show does become more fantastical and less gritty, there are still moments and episodes that capture the essence of SATC. thanks for sharing your thoughts! xx
I think it’s worth looking at Aidan’s toxic masculinity in this episode a little closer, as I think Carrie’s behavior wasn’t as off note as we think. Aidan is trying to offer the wrong type of support, he wants to fix the problem instead of offering the emotional support and space Carrie needs. The further he tries to push, the further he gets from giving his partner the support she needs, and the more frustrated Carrie becomes. This is a problem for many couples as far as I’m aware, and highlights the beginning of their downfall. I believe that Aidan’s unwillingness to change the way he communicates dooms them from the start, as I don’t think he truly knows who Carrie is and what she needs and wasn’t ever really willing to understand.
I think you touch on a good point. Nowadays we talk about the 5 love languages and such but back then it wasn't a thing. Aiden is trying to show love but the way he is doing it is the opposite of what Carrie needed. They were incompatible in many ways and unable to communicate effectively.
I always chuckle at Charlotte at the funeral when finally sees the flowers she ordered. The arrangement is a mess & she's really disappointed. It's a light moment in an otherwise sombre scene.
Pay phones used to be everywhere before cell phones. Everywhere. Grocery stores, outside of strip malls, the post office. You did find them outside more often so they’d be more accessible, but the bigger or more crucial a store/service was, the more likely it was that you’d find a pay phone or two there. Remember, without cell phones, pay phones were a massive business. Anywhere you found lots of people or lots of waiting, pay phones were there.
Random note but I think in Hot Child in the City she comments on some records and said she loved Styx lol and in an earlier episode (the one where her and big first say I love you) she sings the 70s song Joy to the World. I feel like Carrie might’ve liked David Bowie and the Stones haha she seems to like 70s rock
I hate it when they show reruns. They always cut out that scene of Miranda in the changing room that was a pivotal scene and I don’t know why they cut it out.
absolutely, I will definitely be covering the episode where Samantha gets diagnosed with cancer. it's such a pivotal moment in the series. and yes, it is around the same time Miranda marries Steve
re: payphone at tech support- i'd imagine back it would be for those who didn't have cell phones yet (Carrie) or if you were there if your cell phone died and you're there to get it fixed
Great job. Just a quick tip. If possible I’d only use images from the season you’re talking about. If someone is not too familiar with the show, it can be quite challenging to follow and create a metal picture 😉
lol Carrie has never been self dependent in her relationships, you can tell by the way she broke up with Big before jumping to Aidan. She is just a 10 yo girl in the body of a 35 woman.
The thing is, this TV show has amazing moments like this, but it is so inconsistent and nonsensical most of the time that it gets frustrating as it goes.
I totally get where you're coming from. SATC definitely has its highs and lows, with some truly standout moments alongside others that can feel a bit disjointed. It's that mix of brilliance and frustration that keeps fans hooked, though!
Personally I think Aidan is a dick in this episode when it comes to the computer. Carrie is obviously struggling with loosing all her work and her computer that she spends everyday working on and it’s very meaningful to her and rather than just be there for her Aidan just takes over, makes stupid comments that obviously are not helping. He then decides he should be the one to buy a new computer on his own rather than including Carrie in the decision and then starts doing everything and as sweet as that is on the surface it’s obviously not what Carrie needs and as boyfriend he should be able to see how much distress she’s in but makes it about him instead. Best thing Aidan does in this ep is show up at the funeral with Steve to show support for Miranda and Carrie even though Carrie said not to as that’s the type of support Carrie needed.
Here’s the thing. The only reason you criticize Aidan for this is because the show brought him back SPECIFICALLY so his appeal could take a hit. Carrie’s ratings and appeal TANKED after she cheated on a guy who the show had made practically perfect. The whole reason the brought him back was to introduce flaws into his character so the audience would shift allegiance back to Carrie. Clearly it worked. You were manipulated. And it worked.
@@HereForTheComments990 Actually when I first watched I was on his side but as I’ve grown up I dislike him more and more. I haven’t been manipulated I just have an opinion.
@@HereForTheComments990how is disliking a character who became more fleshed out being manipulated? That changed the character, so we stopped liking him. That's not manipulation, that's good writing.
Could Aiden’s white knight syndrome frustrate and upset Carrie so much due to her being fatherless? I always felt Aiden took great care of her and it’s something I always accepted in my relationships. I wanted someone like Aiden to just pull everything together for me while Carrie, it practically triggers her fight or flight. I’ve had strong males in my life, my father and I’ve been with my partner for many years. Maybe that’s why she preferred Big over Aiden. Carrie prefers trying to be self sufficient until absolutely needing help. Big only stepped in when asked until the very end, and in the very end, she desperately needed the hand and to go home.
Fiction is boring to some people. We have our own sandbox and want to learn something. We don't need to be transported to another universe. No judgement, just speaking for non fiction fans. Love an atlas and thesaurus!!
Carrie’s relationship with Aidan was a miscalculation on the side of the show. They made Aidan TOO likeable the first time. So when Carrie cheated on him, there was no way to forgive Carrie for the betrayal. He was the angel and Carrie was the undeniable and unforgivable villain. Her character and the show took a massive hit for what she did because Aidan was flawless. That’s the entire reason they brought him back. They needed to “humanize” Aidan. In other words, they needed to knock him down and introduce character flaws that hadn’t been there before. They needed the audience to hate Aidan a little, so Carrie could recover a bit. So suddenly, Aidan binges on KFC and needs his bulging stomach rubbed instead of going out with Carrie. Suddenly he’s yelling about deodorant and Rogaine. Suddenly he’s pressuring her into marriage because he’s jealous of Big. Suddenly he’s an obnoxious jerk who doesn’t respect Carrie’s boundaries, career, or space. Aidan was too perfect the first time. They literally only brought him back to turn him into a dick so Carrie could win back fan favor. Gross.
Was Aiden being helpful or patronizing? Patronizing of course. Aiden is the absolute worst man in the history of the show. I honestly worry about those women who don't see that
Aiden was always over eager to push a lifestyle onto Carrie that wasn’t fit for the kind of person she was. While he may be many women’s “dream guy” he was certainly not the guy Carrie dreamed about, and actually clashed with more often than not. I don’t think he was worse than many of them, by far, but I also side eye the people that say he was the best. They were so fundamentally incompatible and that absolutely led to patronizing on both sides. He wanted a country, domestic, fix it for ya life and she wanted Manolos, the newest restaurants, and the cover of Vogue.
Yes Aiden is patronizing and honestly he hates every major personality trait of Carrie. I dont know why he gets such great rep, it must be the framing.
I've been loving your Sopranos series! Keep up the good work. I'm an OG SATC fan and remember all the episodes from watching them repeatedly so this is fun content. Since Season 4 was filmed in early 2001 and aired in 2002, it is conceivable to have a pay phone in random places in general. Charlotte is the best type of friend to have during the tough times, she has an emotional intelligence and bandwidth to be that comforting friend any girl would need and rely on. Remember how sweet Charlotte was to Carrie after the brunch where they find Big's engagement announcement in the newspaper? She went home with her so she could cry and be upset. I lost my mom at age 23 and my friends had no idea how to help me which made it worst for my grieving. It makes sense that Miranda had a emotional breakdown in a changing room cause if you remember the second movie, Carrie met Miranda after she was crying in the dept store changing room Carrie worked at. Re Samantha's reaction, it makes sense that she would deny her feelings and pretend that she could lose someone like that but it showed up in her lack of sexual response. I'm glad she gives into her true feelings at the end. I had a friend when my mother died who suggested that we should forget about it all and go clubbing. Later, she apologized for not knowing what to do about a huge loss for me. And Samantha has the capacity to be a supportive friend when Carrie told her about the affair and when Big left Carrie at the altar during the 1st movie. That scene when Samantha was feeding Carrie in bed made me tear up in the theatre. Lastly, I went though the same situation as Miranda when my mom died. It made my trip home to rural America worst where everyone gets married early and have kids. I originally told my city besties to not come to the funeral because it was expensive and during the week. That I'd come home to the city and we could talk about over drinks afterwards. One of my friends didn't listen to me and showed up the day of the funeral and stayed with me, the best Bestie support I ever had. I have great friends.
A 20 minute episode on one of the greatest Sex and the City episodes on this lovely Sunday, you're spoiling us! Can't wait to get comfortable in bed and listen to your takes. Thanks for another great video. 🤍 Also, I have started the Sopranos because of your series on the show's fashion, and I am loving it so far!

Carrie would have looooved it if Big would have solved her computer problems. She just had an issue because it was Aiden

It was a rare time where Carrie was supportive.

I didn't read fiction much in the 00s, though I read a lot of it in the 70s and in recent years.
Yeah self-help books where that generation’s Tiktok and RUclips tutorials and guides in general.
The scene where Miranda tells Carrie she missed her Mothers passing as they went to get some rest really hits me hard now.

I watched all the SATC videos on your channel and I must say, that’s the content I need. Great job. ❤
Thank you so much for your kind words! It means a lot to hear that you enjoyed my SATC videos
The guy from tech serve pretty much summed up Carrie's and Aidan's relationship
Must be in my Charlotte era, i love the jean jacket with the bucket hat 🥹
LOL the telephone booth comment got me😂 i’m 26, and I can remember them being in establishments as a child hahahaha, feelin old rn
babe, I’m 33 🙈
@@KasiaSopniewska wait! Omg 🤣 but see i’m from a small town in the u.s. so that is probably why LOL
I always chuckle at Charlotte at the funeral when finally sees the flowers she ordered. The arrangement is a mess & she's really disappointed. It's a light moment in an otherwise sombre scene.
I love when she says: Those flowers were supposed to say ''We're so sorry, we love you.'' Not ''you're dead, let's disco.'' XD
Such a great episode.
Yes! It was common to have pay phones in public places. I remember there being phone booths in the back of restaurants, for example.
I was rewatching SATC and Girls simultaneously and did not realize Miranda’s sister was played by the same actress as Hannah’s mom omg!
I LOVE Amadeus too! I'm so glad somebody else recognized her in it!
LOVE YOUR OBSERVATION
what an amazing analysis
thank you so much
Cynthia Nixon really disappears into historical roles 😮 I guess I associate her with the red hair so much I don't recognize her without it
TIL cynthia played the maid who spied for salieri in amadeus!!! omg what a cool fact
she was only 16 when she got this role!
I saw her play Juliet in New York in the 80's and she was wonderful. ☺️
This episode also gives me the feels as well. ❤
I really enjoyed Charlotte in this episode she truly was the rock while samantha is showing a vulnerable side
The acting in this epi compared to ajlt is vastly different
Yes. Phone booths in stores and everywhere was normal. Cell phones were for business people
Omg I just started watching the Gilded Age too. I love Aunt Ada
she’s such a sweet character, I hope nothing bad will ever happen to her
Carrie probably has a mixed musical taste and music is a less defining expression of self than fashion for her.
I'm the 90s payphone booths we're in almost every public place
I hate it when they show reruns. They always cut out that scene of Miranda in the changing room that was a pivotal scene and I don’t know why they cut it out.
I'm even crying at the review of the episode lmao
For me it was around Samantha's breast cancer diagnosis. I think that was when Miranda married Steve.
absolutely, I will definitely be covering the episode where Samantha gets diagnosed with cancer. it's such a pivotal moment in the series. and yes, it is around the same time Miranda marries Steve
13:44 this dress reminds me of something Mila Kunis wore on That '70s Show.
This is my favorite episode.
re: payphone at tech support- i'd imagine back it would be for those who didn't have cell phones yet (Carrie) or if you were there if your cell phone died and you're there to get it fixed
also i love your deep dives thank you for everything
Great job. Just a quick tip. If possible I’d only use images from the season you’re talking about. If someone is not too familiar with the show, it can be quite challenging to follow and create a metal picture 😉
unfortunately, whenever I use clips from just one SATC season, my videos get copyright claims, so I mix seasons to avoid that
lol Carrie has never been self dependent in her relationships, you can tell by the way she broke up with Big before jumping to Aidan. She is just a 10 yo girl in the body of a 35 woman.
I used to skip this episode, because it hit too close to home 😢
Love this episode, always makes me cry, particularly the bra scene.
the bra scene is one of those scenes that really sticks with you long after the episode ends
Gross.
How is making a character more human gross?
Carrie listens to STYX 😆
What is this channel about exactly? Are we just revisiting episodes or is there any analysis? Tbh.
I love your voice

Aquarium…
spoilers alert to show from 20y ago :D
Was Aiden being helpful or patronizing?
Patronizing of course.
Aiden is the absolute worst man in the history of the show. I honestly worry about those women who don't see that
I definitely think Aiden has more bad behavior than the fans like to acknowledge, but he cannot be worse than Big or many of the one-time boyfriends
Just stop talking, so that we van hear what they say.....🥴
I never read fiction books
Also, I have started the Sopranos because of your series on the show's fashion, and I am loving it so far!
The Sopranos is great, just don’t get too attached to the characters because… well… they tend to mysteriously disappear from the show 🙊
