I like how you tell newbs to listen to their mentor. I find I always learn the most from people such as yourself that don’t tattoo with an ego. Too many artists make out they are the be all and end all in technique. In my experience you can learn even the smallest of things from anybody no matter how good or how new they are to the industry
well said. your last sentence is my mindset going into art in general. wether it be from stepping into a painting course when you only have drawing experience or learning how to tattoo. leave ego at the door.
I appreciate your videos greatly! It's always refreshing to learn different techniques and approaches that work very well for the artist. You're very well spoken and informative with your commentary without making the viewer feel offput or inferior in any way. Your videos offer abstract insight that removes convention, making your techniques very innovative and provokes the viewer to question what they have learned and developed over their course of tattooing. You inspire growth! Thank you for your videos and I look forward to seeing more from you!
I've been following and watching all the episodes in the series and as a tattoo artist, I really must say you guys are great! Information is straight forward, opens your mind to new techniques and has help me to improve my mindset and skill when approaching my piece's. Just taking the time out alone is commendable and the knowledge shared is priceless. Fireside technique I salute, thankyou.
thanks for sharing bro. great inside & perspective on this. I switched to using mags for lining somewhat naturally without no 1 telling or showing me & it felt so natural. Glad to hear from experts that it is a great toool to have in the art arsenal
Hey Jake, we have a similar approach on things, I do tend to work looser and in layers, and tightening with rounds and darkening further my blacks at the end, wrapping it all together.. nice piece, I feel it needed more roots for better stability., eh, next time. :))
Hi! I adore your video..I m french and been tattoing for 4 months...hard time finding anyone to teach me...in france its difficult...your videos have either taught me a lot...or confort me in the way I was doing things... I m an oil painter...I tatto like I paint ...thank you for being so inspiring...
What an awesome tutorial! Great example! It gives one different ideas on how to approach perspective. I feel you can apply this technique on a lot of three dimensional tattoos. Thank You!
Mind blowing what you did in that first session with just black! Its inspiring, really. I feel foolish diluting blacks this whole time when it can be done purely with technique! I muuust try this. You took a lot of the fear of mags away too. Looking at them more like (really sharp) calligraphy pens..feel even more foolish now, I never put it together and I love using calligraphy pens....brilliant. THANK YOU
I would like to know what speed you are using, on your power sources and if you change the speed while working on the power source. Or are you just changing the speed of your hand and living it the same
Hey jake someone once told me that the definition of a stupid question is a question not asked. So Here it goes, the top right of the branches is it possible to push some mid to light purples would they clash with the reds? Wouldn’t it change of day for the overall piece (as in time of daylight within the piece).
This seems like a great technique. I'm wondering if it can be done in reverse for correction? Do y'all have a video or way to correct the single layer typical 'tree of life' reference you made? I'm assuming that would be much easier with a larger tattoo. The one I have in mind is a tree set in a circle thats about 3 inch diameter...size might make it harder?
Depends, both of those are techniques used by artists. For beginners try riding the barrel. If ur gonna leave the needle out don't leave out more then the width of a quarter. Leaving the needle hanging out is more for experienced artists. Also if your going to learn to tattoo I'd say it'd be best to start with coil machines so you can learn depth perception.
@@bbrewster1986 coil is fucking beautiful to line with, rotary has smoother shading n causes less trauma. I'd go with FK irons my friend if your gonna get a professional machine you have to have a shop ID and all that shit
I have a hard time getting lighter darks without using a grey wash....i find when I use black and lighter pressure I don't go deep enough for the Ink to stay....
just found your channel and absolutely loving it!! Im going to be digging through a bunch, but do you have any recommendations or suggestions for realistic female hair?
Thanks for the video! Did you use the 5 curve mag or flat? Also did you line everything with a 5 mag or did it vary throughout the tattoo? Thanks again!
What do you think or your thought on a guy using a five round to do his whole tattoo the touch it up with a mag to he says a mag will chew up the skin and a round outliner is not as harsh on the skin like it will go in smoother with a liner I’d say a round will make holes easier than a mag what are your thought I see all these new guys doing all the tattoo with ther outliner to me it’s wrong or am I wrong I’ve been tattooing for almost 40 years
I noticed in the last few years a lot of black an Grey guy doing pork chop or large scale pieces with a tight 3 you can see it all over Instagram but it’s only bLack n Grey heads.. It def gives a stipple/peppery type look . (But besides the look , my theory is that, it stems from the cholo’s or guys, who learned tattooing while locked up, with single needle rotaries , you def have more detail/control in tighter spots but also it takes hella longer time ,so when charging by the hour. I started using the corner of mags to line , because my teacher, she’s been tattooing close to 43 year’s) and saw me tattooin I don’t remember what the piece was ; but afterwords she said you should of done it’s with just a Mag. Experimented , and started doing kanji’s ,which it’s great for soft and brushed out , but I was doing it on tribal then realized after time how quickly the edges soften and looks strange next to outline tribal.... depends on the piece a tree I do the same way... Outlines just have a way of holding ink in... and NOWay is a round liner or even shader less traumatic to the skin maybe a loose round bug pin liner or shader but a mag is easier on the skin in my experience.
Any lining with a mag ends up looking blurry as crap in 2-3 years, sometimes less. Not super recommended I feel like some type of linework is always needed.
I believe he said he was using a five mag to do all of the outlines, and the same to shade... Using hand control he makes the depth in the piece... The way I've always done my"gray wash" unless there's an absolutely spot that needed extremely light shading, then I'll take my black and thin it. This it's a new technique to me, I might have to do an artists choice piece so I can challenge myself. Thanks for this, you can never stop learning! There is no self actualization 😊
My mentor doesn't teach me. I hardly started working with practice skins, taught myself lining, haven't been taught anything about shading and I have to bring people in to tattoo.
i started by tattooing my own legs then started tattooing friends and started working in a professional shop 6 months into tattooing.no apprenticeship.4 years later i have my own shop with artists working for me and an apprentice.i get her to bring people in and if she has nothing to do she watches me and i explain everything i do.i believe this is the way.she is doing great and to be honest i got going without a mentor and if you cant get going with someone showing you small tips then tattooing aint for ya.if youre good at art and have common sense you dont need a mentor
Neil Dickson I agree, even tho I've been through 2 mentors who up and leave their own shops, I haven't let it stop me!! I'm doing the same as you it seems, hope to get that far one day. One day at a time!
common sense really comes into it.i had a guy show me a few things at the start but i now use nothing he showed me.youll find whats good for you and go with it but until then if ya have any questions il try and help cheers.my way may not be the right way but it is for me lol

Art is a very subjective thing. Technique and drawing skill can be boiled down to some essentials a lot easier..These techniques can be EXPLORED ON PAPER FIRST!! Im not sure I care to be constructive CUZ I JUST WANNA BEcritical. Either way this is just my opinion based on my experience..But I see this video and many like it as a big problem. You have an audience.. And there are not a lot of professional looking videos on tattooing on RUclips with actual commentary.. Im not sure I want tattooing to join the social media meat market.. So here goes my critique that no one asked for and prob no one will read.. I just hope that just one person will read this and ask themselves how much they know because My main point isn't that anyone should listen to me....but just know if you're not a tattooer,, you are ignorant to what goes into a tattoo design. And sadly most tattooers are ignorant or incapable of designing a good tattoo for every situation or any!!! Not to mention understanding technique as it applies to tattoo machines takes years.. because it isn't just a machine... It the Ink Its the needles...How clean is your artist...What drawing or design experience do they have..How long have they been tattooing for? Granted its much easier nowadays given most tattoo machines are plug and play...uN like coil machines which required maintenance and a different understanding of the physics of needles and hand movement etc..And Inks are easy to acquire but not cheap.. Just know 90% of tattooers currently are inexperienced or just bad. If people only sought out the very best there would be a small group of of maybe 10-15% that would be so busy they'd never have to be concerned about marketing themselves... Patrons should be seeking out individual artist who fit their style needs and making sure the work is clean ....And don't use yelp for chrisake.. The biggest reason why this video is bad for tattooing is because it assumes ALL tattooers are capable of using ANY technique to achieve a particular look.. WRONG.. Most are incapable of a simple tattoo much less something hand drawn on an area with a marker. The drawing or design is subpar.. The tattoo technique is blah.. Totally unnecessary to try and even "line " this..Either go for a graphic no outline look or actually line it. "cleanly".. Using a mag to line is great if the lines are triple marker thickness..Otherwise just use a round shader.. I want to be clear here...there are people who do amazing work using only mags.. this guy is using this as an experiment or a tutorial video so he can stroke it to the internet... There are people who focus their entire folio and career on this type of technique and they know where to draw the line (pun intended) And they aren't doing it because its a technique to apply its just the way they do Art. This is why tattooing should never have tutorials with varying techniques done by the same person. You have 54 k viewers seeing a very skewed view of what is actually possible using a given technique... You better present the very best use of a given technique or just focus on the techniques you're best at. You should not be exploring the concept of a particular technique.. You either focus your career on learning and being the best you can which will or can bring you through different techniques but these are not experiments.. These are people who have to live with your bullshit. My advice is learn the basics of tattooing ...When to line when not ....Solid colors bold lines... delicate calligraphy...wispy smokey lines...whispy smokey shading..whip shading..shading with a liner...lining with a round shader no lines at all etc etc.. only doing these things as the opportunity presents itself.. it takes patience and an understanding of your strong and weak points. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY you get the basics of tattooing by doing simple small tattoos like kanji and lettering simple walk-ins ....THEN BEFORE YOU DO A GIANT SHITTY BACKPIECE You can practice this techniques on paper or canvas or a tablet,iPad whatever... Cool piece. Thanks for sharing these tips! I Watch all your videos, look forward to more.

Is that a Cheyenne Thunder?
Great stuff man. 🙏🏻
Love your ideas & this tattoo ❤✌
Brilliant!!!
What black did you use? And did you used a standard mag or bug pin?
I would like to know what speed you are using, on your power sources and if you change the speed while working on the power source. Or are you just changing the speed of your hand and living it the same
Hey jake, whould you recommend holding the machine the same for soft black and grey shading like for coloring, or whould you recommend a 90°angle?
Thank you sir !!
u r excelent artist
Fucking beautiful, if only my tattooing was half to par with yours! That's was amazing!

but you use a liner machine with shader needles, right? not a shader machine
NO still need a shader for the longer slower stroke just turn shader sideways
pass your drug test but a strong line machine with shade needles will work just fine too, no?
