I love the fact that you are an artist and not just a "tattooist". You being able to explain it in art terms sets you apart from other tattoo tutorials I have seen and therefore have been the most helpful. Thank you
I've told you many times how much I love your podcasts. I'm still in the sketching/drawing phase, but I love absorbing the knowledge from tattoo artists like you.
He was actually talking on one of his recent podcasts that he only books several months at a time now. I would contact him. Really nice guy and does amazing work! His name is Jake Meeks
Actually, us Fireside dudes live in Memphis, and Jake isn't booked TOO far out I don't believe. You can reach out about getting an appointment on our website www.tattooimprovement.com.
Awesome work! Very nice and clear explanation. Just love the way you care about getting technical and observes how important it is to preserve the natural movements. Congrats.
Great video. Definitely sharing some great looks.i used to approach color tattoos the same way you were describing with the grey tones underneath colors to get that color i was looking for and you are correct with the results coming out "muddy" . But when you go at it in a painters point of view the black layed in right the colors definitely come out more vivid.
Great video bro... I'm a rookie to tattooing. One question 4 u... how fast does the machine suppose to go when you are shading? U made it look so easy to get the ink into the skin.. i saw that u dont need to go over to get bold and thick blocking.. please advice.. thank you for ur time bro..
Stretch the skin dude. No one can tell you how fast to run your machine. You need to learn how fast or slow to go. Learn how your machine runs or tune it to run how you want.
Hey, sorry for my english, but just wanted to thank you for those kind tips you take time to give !! I'm begining and it's not easy it's a pretty closed world so you're very helpful.. Thank you !!
That would be great...I also know some people using them and they blend amazingly. I am sure you will do great and I am looking forward to the next episode. Cheers Guys !!!
do you have to wait till the black heals before you add color? i’ve been wanting to do traditional tats with heavy shading like most are but not sure if i can do it in one session or not
There is a difference between a beginner after an apprenticeship and a scratcher with no intention of doing things right and learning what that means. They are out there tearing people up because "tattooing is easy". If you're not a scratcher don't be offended. But honestly everyone does start out scratchers and old heads should talk big shit. That way we get the thick skin we need for this business or get weeded out. Also good for motivation when you want to earn these dudes who have put so much time into tattooing and have done so much for future generations.
hello very nice job!! one question if u can answer, when I tattooing with RS u have to shade only with circle or you can shade back and forward too?? and when tattooing is good to clean the ink with dettol antiseptic.??? really thanks
Can i fix a shading that i can see some stroke in it? Looks like i went sideways with my mag so theres one line like a needle thin and not so dark in the shading of a piece i made on my shin but im affraid that if i go back and try to darken things up that line will get darker aswell since ill have to go back on it. Thanks
One of my favorite days anymore is when FIRESIDE TECHNIQUE VIDS come out :) When WIPING, how do you keep it from smearing? Thats a huge time saver im sure :) I watch you and 1 wipe and the areas super clean, I wipe and ink just smears, i need 3 papertowels, takes me forever to get back into the tattoo etc etc etc.. I use vaseline and Intense and Waverly inks.
+Alphonsos DaMan Thanks! Glad to hear you are looking forward to the episodes. I think I smear ink around as bad as anyone. I do try to wipe often before I end up with a complete mess. I use very little ointment and dab the tattoo pretty regularly. My biggest issue with smearing seems to be with blue inks. No idea why, but I feel like everything in the room is covered in blue when I finish.
hahaha i appreciate the answer! :) PLEASE KEEP DOING THESE OUTSTANDING VIDS IF YOU CAN!!! I THANK YOU GUYS and want to take part in your artist course if possible :) Already sent a email from killforbeer ;)
thanks this is great us always. and yea i have had the exact problem that i draw one way and the cold machine that i use beheaves differently and i end up doing moves that dont feel us natural us a pen or pencil. =) thanks again =)
I m using cheyenne. when im trying to put shadows what i get is dotted area... i dont have problems with solid filling. but when im shading with rm m or rs im making dots instead of grey area.... whats the reason?? i cant work over it.? is it my wrist moves? i tried different machine speed... or maybe i hit too deep?
Hey jake, Love your videos, they are really helpful for people that already know what they are doing with theyr machine. I am able to get very smooth shades, colour transitions, pack in colour nicely, but which technique i really dont know yet is shading for traditional tattoos with this oldschool stripe effect, where you can see the single rows of dots that the magnum does. Do you know what i mean? Myke chambers sometimes uses this effect in his leafs and brando chiesa is always using it for his backgrounds. Do you have an idea how to create this effect? I thought hard set up machine (4mm stroke rotary without give) running not to fast and really fast hand speed, but i am not 100% sure if thats the way how to achieve that effect.i use the stigma spear pen and i really love it, it runs perfectly smooth and the stroke adjustement gives me the possibility of choosing between a soft, or really hard hitting machine. Whould be nice if you could maybe help me achieving the effect that i am looking for, thanks and keep up your great work :)
is that a curved mag you are using for the black or standard mag?....what voltage do you use for lining , shading and color packing?...i read on one of your other posts that you use the same voltage for color packing as you do lining....can you explain please....
Great video! But most of the tips are for bigger tattoos where you can come back at the next session, do you have some tips for smaller colour pieces that are made in one session? I mean how to achieve soft shades without the peppery look (and without greywash) to layer colour ink directly over it. I also only use black (panthera lining black) for shading and varriate the pressure, but maybe you have 1-2 tips to get the shades even smoother. I also use a rotary pen without give (spektra xion) Thanks :)
Hi Fireside tattoo network!! Love your videos! Question/ I recently bought a Cheyenne thunder. I love it but having a problem with soft shading. Using curved bugpin Cheyenne cartridges, but I absolutely tore up the skin! Is there a preferred setting for this machine? Lining and color packing was no problem, but shading made it soft red, even after 1 pass. Help!? Thank you and appreciate the help.
What are the best black inks and needles for a coil machine?? And where can I buy em anyone and another question how come my tattoos blow out or the ink come off alot ??
You should do a video about tunning the machine. What do you mean when you say a longer stroke? Is it better longer or shorter? What if I want my machine faster or softer. I think it would be priceless to have this knowledge. Thank you guys, your videos are great. Greetings from Chile.
Question, can you do more color technique videos? As far as color blending and explaining how to make really vibrant colors? Because ive seen tattoos like kelly doty, timmy b where they will make blues, red, greens etc look like high lighter colors. Also how do you set white into the skin? i hear people say they put white over color or black for detail, then others saying they leave certain areas blank to put in white at the end, so i wanted to know the best way to do it and if the voltage should be turned up or down when putting in white.
Thanks for the comment. We have addressed the issue of bold and bright color in a few podcast episodes but not so much in the technique episodes. I will try to put something together on the subject. Thanks again
really great videos have learned alot and see an improvement in my work! i would love a video on how to do normal portraits! what needles, and how to lay down light greys in and build it up in the dark areas! :) thanks guys brill vids!
Hello :) I would be very grateful for smooth b and G shading as well :) . When I am shading with large mags, with the lightest wash, i sometimes have needle traces showing on the skin. I was wondering why. could it be, because the lightest wash is getting mixed with the darker one ? - more black particles in the lightest wash ? Or is it really just machine set up ? :)) Would be great if you could help. Cheers and big ups for your channel ! Thanks. Tomas
you using the thinder. pleaee tell me whats the best speed for shading .color or liner please. im about to buy one. and my other question is. whats diference on regular power supply. shpuld i get hayenne for better run or regular will do the job too? and hell yeah video helps a lot. you awesome . good talent and sein you kind of have your own style of working
Thanks a lot. Unfortunately there is no "best speed". It is completely dependent on the way you make marks. I have a friend who is a very solid tattooer that runs his Thunder at 13v. I run mine at 6.5-7v. It's a personal preference
hi from Prague! (yeah central europe haha)... love your hints, have to admit they are one of the best on youtube indeed.. how many times i can go over same place? well of course it depens on pressure etc.. but stil.. what the healthy edge for the skin? :) thanks for answer man
Another good explanation thanks! now this may be a little off subject but although when fresh the ink is black but all the black and gray tattoos I've seen are a dark navy type blue in a short period of time and I've never herd in anything on Tattoos about this? the reason I ask is that should when adding a colour next to it you should be thinking its dark blue not black. Hope that makes sense?
+STEVEN BEATTIE I do always think of black and white as blue. I was taught this in painting because I tended to use black in my shadows and found that my portraits all looked like corpses. So to answer your question, I do tend to warm my shadows up when necessary by glazing deep, warm colors over the healed black. I think you can get rich shadow areas with this technique. Thanks. Hope all is well with you.
Like the result! Will it make a big difference if you do shading with graywashes first and apply colours after that (maybe on the 2nd session) and if you do color work in "alla-prima" technique? Applying colors of all values without black shading is of course very cool, but I think it is only for professionals, maybe for professional artists. First option is much easier - but will you get good results? I personally found that drawing a black and white picture is somewhat easy for me, but drawing same picture in color is difficult! I mean making the new design, not re-drawing ready flash)))
In a one shot tattoo I typically do apply color and value at the same time. I think the results are fine that way. On large pieces, I like to lay out my large areas of light and dark first. It helps me to break the tattoo into manageable chunks
Great vid, what speed do you run your machine at? An how much needle do you have out to work off so that you can adjust pressure in the hand? Thanks man!:)
+LT Potter I typically run the machine around 6.3-6.5 volts. I constantly change the needle depth depending on the area of the body. Thats why I like the adjustable grips so that I can make those decisions on the fly
+Fireside Tats thank you for taking the time to reply dude! I set my Thunder at 6.5 today instead of 9.0, but didn't get the kind of saturation than you do here and not sure why , but it did feel a lot easier on the skin so I want to get to grips with it at that speed! Been lining with it at 6.5 recently since your lining video and feel I've so much more control and room for sculpting and not damaging the skin and everything's healing beautifully, just struggling with mag work .
+LT Potter I have several friends that run the Thunder much faster with good results. Nick Baxter runs his close to 13 v. I really think it's just a matter of finding how to make it fit your natural movement. Experimentation is the only way. Thanks again.
Amazing as usual !!!Thank you for all your help with my previous questions .I was wondering what you think about doing black and grey tattoos with actual grey inks rather then grey washes ?of course it would not work for all the designs ...Thank you so much .
+mikerosi1 I've tried using grey inks only 2 times (once today) and am still trying to figure out how to best approach using them. I know people are doing very nice work with them. The jury is still out for me but I plan to do a technique episode with them in the fairly near future (prepare for me to sound like an idiot). Thanks
I do use Cheyenne. I am constantly adjusting the needle depth based on what configuration I am using as well as the area of the body I am tattooing. Thanks for watching
Thanks Ramon. I normally run between 6.5-7v but I know several artists that run nearly twice that voltage. I think it just depends on how you prefer to make marks.
There's a scratcher or two in my area that are legit better than most of the shop artists around. It's a shame they get so much hate for not confirming to the elitists.
Southeast Tattoo Supply cartridges? you mentioned a discount on one of your videos, however, I cannot find the link now. A little help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks Jake!!
try laser removal, find an artist that specializes in lettering, or has good lettering pieces in their portfolio, they will be able to tell you how much laser treatment is needed for them to go in and put the new tattoo in place, so you don't need to completely laser everything off. search for guys like boogs, bj betts, sir twice, normwillrise, some dope letter tattooists,
Hard to say. People work very differently. I always say that your machine should serve your natural drawing style and hand movement. Be sure to play with settings (voltage, machine tuning, etc) to see if you can get better results. The goal is good saturation with minimal skin trauma. I'll see if I can do a saturation troubleshooting video.
i love your tutorials and narrating, however the difference between your opening music and clear voice is too much of an extreme. could you possibly increase the voice or reduce the volume on the music opener?. please. i watxh it on my big screen tv and have to constantly asjust the volume i swear this is my only complaint
I stop this video in a minute and 25 seconds. Do you change the level of shading by pressure and depth? Oh pigment, if you wanted to last the same amount of time in the skin, should be embedded at the same depth. This is appalling and completely ignorant. Wait to you see that piece come back in five
I don't understand the language you're speaking. The piece is finished and healed now. You can see photos on my instagram @pluguglyart. Thanks for watching
I would agree if this tattoo were intended to be finished in greyscale. This video is meant to show how to build value for a full color tattoo. I don't lke to blend greys out too far in this case because, in my experience, it makes for muddy transitions in color. I prefer to use different values of a color to make the transitions. There are healed photos of this tattoo in my instagram (@pluguglyart) if you would like to see what I mean. I apologize for any confusion
I love the fact that you are an artist and not just a "tattooist". You being able to explain it in art terms sets you apart from other tattoo tutorials I have seen and therefore have been the most helpful. Thank you
Thanks a lot for the kind words. We appreciate the support
I've told you many times how much I love your podcasts. I'm still in the sketching/drawing phase, but I love absorbing the knowledge from tattoo artists like you.

Thank you Jake. I wish I lived closer to Nashville. I would definitely love to get a tattoo from you. I love your artwork and tattoos.
Yes he is.

Legend nice to see a down to earth tattoo artist helping out instead of these big ego idiots
Thanks a lot for the supprot
Wow i just realized how old this video is yet still gave me fresh info.
i am a painter and i am doing a apprenticeship and i never thought i could go about doing a tattoo the way i go about doing a painting. this is dope!
Love this channel. Thanks again for another banger 🤘
Thanks for watching and the kind words!

Thanks. Working on another one tonight. Can't wait to get your opinion on it.
Hey, sorry for my english, but just wanted to thank you for those kind tips you take time to give !! I'm begining and it's not easy it's a pretty closed world so you're very helpful.. Thank you !!
love to see a video on how you tune your machines
I am mostly using rotaries now and they are pretty much maintenance free. We do plan to do an episode on tuning coil machines though
+Fireside Tattoo Network please make a video on it
That would be great...I also know some people using them and they blend amazingly. I am sure you will do great and I am looking forward to the next episode. Cheers Guys !!!
Thanks for watching
Fantastic video.. Thanks
Outstanding Love It!
Thanks a lot
great videos man .. what voltage do you set your shader on? I just brought a Cheyenne thunder and it would be nice to get abit of advice thanks man :)
i def got more of an understanding pf this topic.. very helpful
+Eddie Katura Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching
What kind of needle and what size did you use for the shading
Awesome your a real tattooist my friend I log. What u had to say
do you have to wait till the black heals before you add color? i’ve been wanting to do traditional tats with heavy shading like most are but not sure if i can do it in one session or not
everyone was a scratcher at some point, to talk down to beginners means you forgot where you came from.
There is a difference between a beginner after an apprenticeship and a scratcher with no intention of doing things right and learning what that means. +mantizz Common issue. Thanks.
what stencil did you use for that work? how come it doesnt get erased? or is it a stencil?
Nice!thank you for video
I m using cheyenne. when im trying to put shadows what i get is dotted area... i dont have problems with solid filling. but when im shading with rm m or rs im making dots instead of grey area.... whats the reason?? i cant work over it.? is it my wrist moves? i tried different machine speed... or maybe i hit too deep?
Hey jake,

How much needle depth comes out when the machine is running

What machine u using? And needle and voltage? Thanks
What needles did you use for shading thanks in advance
What are the best black inks and needles for a coil machine?? And where can I buy em anyone and another question how come my tattoos blow out or the ink come off alot ??
What size needle did you use for the reference lines?
I find myself either using too big of a needle for reference line or getting the ink too dark.
You should do a video about tunning the machine. What do you mean when you say a longer stroke? Is it better longer or shorter? What if I want my machine faster or softer. I think it would be priceless to have this knowledge.
Thank you guys, your videos are great.
Greetings from Chile.
+topinss Thanks. We have intended to do a video on machine tuning but just havent gotten around to it. I will put it on the list.

Thanks a lot. We are working on a show along those lines right now.
Brilliant thanks alot :)
good stuff !!!

Could you make a video about how to soft Black and grey shading ?
Sure. I will do that

how do you set up the machines for lining and shading
There is no one right way to set up machines. You really need a mentor to help in those areas. Good luck
When shading with your black and no gray washes, how far out does your needle sit? I know you use Cheyenne correct?
I do use Cheyenne. I am constantly adjusting the needle depth based on what configuration I am using as well as the area of the body I am tattooing. Thanks for watching
Lol... looks so easy
Cool videos. So many quality informations. But how much Hz or Volts du you use with the pen for Color packing oder Black shading?
Thanks Ramon. I normally run between 6.5-7v but I know several artists that run nearly twice that voltage. I think it just depends on how you prefer to make marks.
is there a video showing this finished?
It's still in progress. I will post it when finished on my instagram (@pluguglyart)
There's a scratcher or two in my area that are legit better than most of the shop artists around. It's a shame they get so much hate for not confirming to the elitists.
how many volts u are using???by the way ur video helps a lot......tnx in advance
Thanks. Glad the videos are helping. I am running around 6.5-7 volts
What's the name of your podcast? And is it on stitcher? If not where can I find it ?
It is under Fireside Tats on Stitcher and Itunes or you can watch the video versions on this channel. Thanks!
very nice.
Thanks a lot
Thanks!!!
Thank you
WHILE SHADING VASELINE IS TO B USED OR NOT
Does the lower voltage you use make the shading lighter?
Not sure. It just seems to work with the way that I naturally move my hand when drawing.
Love your videos helped me a lot.and what tattoo machine are you using in the video?
Thanks a lot. I am using the Cheyenne Pen in this video
Hi I’m a tattoo artist now
Southeast Tattoo Supply cartridges? you mentioned a discount on one of your videos, however, I cannot find the link now. A little help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks Jake!!
Sorry for the slow reply. I'm pretty sure you just enter the promo code "Fireside" at checkout for the discount
ive been trying to find a good fix for a BAD tattoo the lettering on it is garbage its on my forearm.... plz help!
try laser removal, find an artist that specializes in lettering, or has good lettering pieces in their portfolio, they will be able to tell you how much laser treatment is needed for them to go in and put the new tattoo in place, so you don't need to completely laser everything off.
search for guys like boogs, bj betts, sir twice, normwillrise, some dope letter tattooists,
awesome video bro. what kind of machine are you using I love it?
Thanks a lot. I am using the Cheyenne Hawk Thunder in this video.
Thanks buddy.. great job.
Thanks for sharing, my ink doesn't go in as easily as yours, any tips?
Hard to say. People work very differently. I always say that your machine should serve your natural drawing style and hand movement. Be sure to play with settings (voltage, machine tuning, etc) to see if you can get better results. The goal is good saturation with minimal skin trauma. I'll see if I can do a saturation troubleshooting video.
Thank you, much appreciated!
What speed is your tattoo machine at?
6.5-7 volts

i love your tutorials and narrating, however the difference between your opening music and clear voice is too much of an extreme. could you possibly increase the voice or reduce the volume on the music opener?. please. i watxh it on my big screen tv and have to constantly asjust the volume
i swear this is my only complaint
Thanks for the advice. Ill double check levels to be sure they are consistent. (Not our strong point obviously)

You are not helping us in the community move forward..
Tattoo Improvement dont sweat idiot comments, your amazing noone can bash you at all, It just shows they are jelly of you.
ignore. them . you are great artist.
Thanks!
