  • In this episode, I’m visiting Bucklers Hard on the Beaulieu estate - just a short distance from Palace House, Beulieu Abbey and the National Motor Museum. The first Earl of Sandwich, the branch of the Montagu family which I married into, is known worldwide because he was head of the Admiralty and brought King Charles II back from exile. But it’s now wonderful for me to visit Beaulieu and discover the rich maritime links of another branch of the Montagu family.
I’ll be meeting with the Hon. Mary Montagu-Scott who has a lifelong passion for the maritime history of Beaulieu and is a keen sailor. Mary shows me the replica timber framed shipwrights workshop which she masterminded. And my husband Luke and I will be cheering on our 17 year old son, William as he and Mary set sail on the Beaulieu river.

When I got married, after a fashion, we moved to South Carolina and bought our first house in a "mill village." Born in New England, and later raised in Upstate New York, I had absolutely no idea what was a mill village! South Carolina (hello, cotton!) is a very big producer of textiles, thus heavily populated with textile MILLS. And, villages grew up around the mills...hence mill villages. Proximity to the mill indicated the corporate position of the owner, the size of the house, and, therefore, his rank in local society. We lived in one of the big houses close to the mill...four beds, two baths, a to-die-for kitchen with an eating area, formal dining room, 20x24' living room w/ fireplace, huge front porch, and a lawn so plush it felt like velvet. Plus a fig tree in the back. The whole idea about industrial villages is that they take care of their own, and they're really wonderful in that way!

Wonderful that William will be involved in sailing instructing. Love how the shipyard village has been preserved, but I’d imagine it’s present condition is more pristine and less frenetic than when it was a working shipyard.

    Dear Julie.
I am so enjoying your series on Bealieu and its evtensive history. I really was moved by your reaction walking the grounds of the Abbey enclosure. The ruins still retain their sense of space and porpose. Henry Vlll act of Vandalism in the 1530's has not deminished the initial Glory of that Space .Can you imagine the Roof being on that structure Today. I love the fact that the Tapestaries reflect the monks role in the History of the area and the callous and brutal Act of the King and Government at the time. Ruins all over Britian and Ireland are testiment to this terrible period.
Todays episode was equally interesting and Butler's Hard has its own History lovingly preserved. I love that humour is first and formost in your relationship with Luke . Your all good sports to brave the elements in support of your son William. Its a charmed life indeed
Your Premiere today was magic .I think the toddle stole the show but all the adults were tops too in kindness and thats what its all about.

What a fun day! Wonderful watching William sail. I absolutely love British weather, as I do Norway's. All the rain and bluster. So cozy. Also very much miss tea time. And again, everything does stop for tea.

This is, by far, one of my favorite episodes yet…my uncles sailed off of the Long Island Sound when they were young (& during he summer on fishing boats to earn extra income) & one, much later in life built his own sailboat...

It's great to have been able to see this. My 4th great grandfather was the Estate Steward for Beaulieu from 1827 to 1846. You guys are hilarious - and such fun. Lovely to be able to watch the sailing as well - brings it all back.

This is a very interesting episode, seeing William and Mary sailing, Luke providing us with the much needed commentaries and explanations, and of course Julie with her undying enthusiasm. Even though we’re an archipelago, we’re not particularly familiar with sailing, so this episode is certainly a gem.

Julie, are you aware that the "Spencer" tiara -- yes, the one that Lady Diana Spencer wore at her wedding to the then Prince of Wales --was originally created for Viscount Montagu in the 1700s? Truly. Perhaps this branch of the family. I find that fascinating. 💜💜 Don't quite know how it got to the Spencers, but it did. This was a great video. Kudos to Mary 💜💜💜
