- Its been 1221 miles since I installed the Evil Energy Oil catch can on my Honda Ridgeline 2018 RTLE with 48,000 miles. After seeing how much was accumulated in the first 1200 miles I have decided to release the results as they were much more significant than I expected them to be.
The Giveaway has ended. Thank you all for participating.
(Installing this may or may not void warranty so if you are unsure please check with your local honda dealer. Do at your own risk.)
Thank you all so much for your support!

That is a lot of oil to catch. I have a 19 RTL-T and you have my attention. By the way the 2 vids on the trunk were priceless. Found and fixed. Thank you.
I just put a deposit on a '22 Ridgeline and I will definitely be putting one on that truck. Keep up the great content.
I installed one just like yours on my '17 RTL E about a year age, with similar oil catch.
Just emptied mine. 40 grams or just under 3 table spoons. Basically 2 Tbs of water vapor and 1 Tbs of the milky oil / fuel mix. +/- 2400 miles (winter/cold temperature) driven and a lot of remote starts. Identical catch can to Yuri's. Excellent addition to the Ridgeline and to any direct injection engine.
I have a 2017 BE and you peaked my interest on this catch can. I'm the kinda guy that keeps my vehicles for a long time so, thanks for making this result video. 👍
Glad I could help!
Good video. Please produce a video of your Oil Catch Csn install on the Ridgeline…components, install location, hose routing, brackets, etc.
Got you covered. 👍🏻

WoW, I have a ‘21 BE and I’ll be adding this to my “to do list”! Thank you!
Thank you for explaining what it is and does in simple plain terms! 2020 sport here and definitely something now I need to install. Keep up the good work with your videos 👏🏼
Wow I didn’t expect that! As a Ridgeline owner I appreciate your videos
Thanks for posting a follow-up video on this catch can so quickly. I'm definitely sold on wanting one now. Keep the great content coming, Yuriy!
Honestly not surprised by this outcome. It seems like every engine now that uses direct injection has this issue.
It will be interesting to see if the amount increases over time with milage on the engine.
I would hate to see what the wife's Subaru would look like if I installed one.
With your permission, I'd like to share some of your videos with my Dealer. They sell more Ridgelines than anyone else within a 300 mile radius. You have some good info that I'm sure their technicians could utilize for customer benefit.
That is fine with me.
It has nothing to do with direct ejection. No matter what fuel delivery system, weather it is DI, PI, TBI, or carburetor, oil will always find its way to the intake.
@@squidusn71 Correct, all PCV systems will have some degree of crankcase oil, in aerosol form, fed back onto the intake. However, on any system which introduces fuel before the valves detergents in the fuel prevent carbon buildup on the back side of the valves. These really only have long term value on DI engines which don’t take advantage of the fuel detergent effect. Some manufacturers have introduced fuel misters on the intake manifold side to combat the issue so it would be interesting to confirm with Honda engineering what mitigation they have deployed to prevent carbon buildup on the back side of the valves.
I have a pilot and the best thing I ever did was disable the vcm with the svcm disabler the car drives incredible. Better then it did new
Love all the tips! I’ve been wanting a ridge line and have watched a ton of your videos on it. Pretty sure it’s all the truck I’d need
Wow I put this in the Ridgeline Owners Club forum alway great information Yuriy!
Just so you know all engine have blowby same applies with diesel but there are two types of blow-by traditional blow by when it gets past the rings creating more pressure and then there's the rotating assembly as the piston moved up and down it moved the air around which is not really blow-by it just positive and negative crank pressure all happening at the same time.
Started following you a few weeks back and really enjoy your videos. 2018 BE owner.
Very informative and the proof of benefit is exactly what you’ve shown. Thank you Yuriy.
Congratulations Norman! You have won the giveaway! Please send me an email titled Giveaway so I can send you your prize. You can find my email in "About" on my channel. Look forward to hearing from you and thank you so much for participating!
@@YuriyMotso couldn’t find your email in about
@@YuriyMotso Sorry I looked all over for your email and cannot find it, Norm.
@@YuriyMotso I’m looking forward to receiving the oil catch and installing on my RTL-E. Thanks again for the giveaway Yuiry!
I have a 2019 Ridgeline Sport and I’m definitely gonna need one of these!!
Sounds like an awesome thing to have in our trucks! Thanks for all the content!
I own a 2021 sport with the HPD package. This is definitely something I would consider installing. Thanks for the insight.
All your videos are very informative and right to the point.
Did not know about a catch can thanks
I NEED THAT IN MY ACURA MDX.. WELL DONE BUDDY .. THATS A REALLY GOOD IDEA…👍👍👍🙏🙏
Valuable info. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this video.
Thank you.
I got a 17 Ridgeline RTS AWD about to hit 100k miles. Might need this item for it.
You should not be saying "blow-by" as this is completely not blow-by and that is going to sound scary to people. Blow-by is compression inside the cylinder being leaked into the engine oil.
What the catch can does is catch the oily vapor that would otherwise be recycled back into your intake, causing the intake to get dirty, and allows you to drain the oil out.
Keeps the intake cleaner, and this is just how engines are designed it has nothing to do with this particular engine. Oil catch cans are always a good idea on any vehicle to keep the engine cleaner.
Ordering one now!
It’s been three years now and wanted an update. Do you still own the vehicle ?
I need one for my 2021 ridgline rtl-e. And I live in Canton Ga.
Nice vid. Have a 21 passport so the same engine here. Guess I may need one of these!
After 3 months of waiting, my Black Edition is supposed to arrive by Friday. Looks like this will be a must have mod!
Great stuff here. Was looking for some tinkering for the truck, this might do it!
For the price it's not going to hurt the bank, will increase efficiency and "should" not void warranty.
That is great information and thank you for sharing your tips.
I might get this for my odyssey! Great video!
Hey, even them minivans need to get from point a to b quick, fast and in a hurry. Love the odyssey. Torn between odyssey and Sienna when I decide to buy my wife her next vehicle.
That’s a surprising amount of oil!
I have a catch can on my 20 RTL-E and I am getting about the same results as you are.
Isn't this more prevelant with the new 2020+ "Earth Dreams" engines that now do not have the VTM button?
I am definitely shocked by how much oil is in there-would like to see if the s-vcm delete would make any differences.
S-vcm will not do anything infact it will harm engine more because it raises the operating temprature. Instead inspect your pcv valve every oil change and install catch can
Definitely been thinking about one of these
This is a follow up to your follow up. 2020 RTL-E owner, purchased new. Having watched your catch can install and researching other such installs and results. I purchased the same unit and installed soon after the 3 year warranty. Also installed a VCM muzzler. With 21k miles on it. I drove 1,000 miles then checked the can’s contents. It contained virtually the exact amount yours did! Thanks for inspiration to install the catch can. I like to keep vehicles 10 or so years or up to around 100,000 miles. This should help ensure my RL makes it there, and the next guy can install the new timing belt, etc. lol.
Direct injection gets you power & efficiency but at a cost
What time of year and Temps? I found it's pretty minimal during summer times. But in winter at below freezing it catches a lot more.
I’ve seen other catch can videos for different vehicles that accumulated lots of water. Have you experienced any water buildup during the winter months? I was curious because I just installed the evil energy version without the optional filter on top and the instructions advise to revert back to factory setup during freezing temperatures because moisture could freeze in the filter portion of the catch can and create blockage to the pcv system.
I have a winter update video that does contain more water. Haven’t taken mine off in the winter but I would say do it if your vehicle does produce lots of watery build up after checking
In the winter you'll get more
Cool. My 2019 needs this mod
I have a 2022 Honda Ridgeline, and I have noticed Honda's quality decline quite a bit in certain models.
Great informative video!
Good find!!!
Hello from Canada :)
I have a 2020 RTE, had no idea this was an issue
How is it during the winter? Any frozen water condensation? still using it with good luck? Do you find you need to add more oil between oil changes?
No frozen condensation that would affect the vehicle. Remember that it’s at the bottom. So even if it’s frozen, you still have open hose for the air to circulate. The Ridgeline, Atleast mine, has always eaten oil between oil changes so I cannot confirm an improvement or not
When will you be doing the SVCM? There is a lot of debate on the Pilot forums that the SVCM will make your engine last longer also.
I plan on doing it. No current time frame however. Would be difficult to prove it will increase the life expectancy or reliability of the engine. Too many variables for this to be the sole contributor.
If you catching oil, does that mean you have to add more oil?
Wow good job bro nice one
Thanks. Good vid
Had a Mishimoto on a 2017 Camaro SS. I was always surprised at how much it collected. They're essentially just a wide spot in the line but very effective.
I see you removed the air filter why?
I run the AEM drop in filter over the AEM performance CAI. It has slightly better fuel economy.
Just saw your video. If it's not too late I'd like to be entered in your giveaway. And Thank you.
Will adding an oil catch can void any warranty?
No. If you are concerned though you can ask your Honda dealership. There is a law that protects owners from void warranty’s for these specific reasons. They have to prove that the modification was the root cause for the failure. Can’t remember the name but you can Google it.
Would love to see difference after the svcm install and how much between oil changes. 1/4 of tablespoon isn’t all that much when most auto manufacturers say 1 qt of oil consumption per 800-1k miles is normal for new cars
1qt of oil is normal?? I never heard this about newer vehicles. That must be for subarus. 🤣 man my Subarus ate oil like it was breakfast.
Yeah Honda, I believe says 1qt per 1k miles and Chrysler on some of there cars it’s 1qt per 500 miles.. that’s why the Jeep renegade has a service bulletin about them because in 5k miles can burn the 5 qts of oil and the car actually stalls because the exhaust valves are ran thru oil pressure, don’t have oil, pressure can open the exhaust valve.
Maybe us Ridgy runners like to see our VVTI kick in too much:)
It’s that AEM intake. 🤣😂 if you have it installed you want to hear it.
Gimme a catch can😂
Thanks for this, any idea if it voids the warranty?
It shouldn’t. There is a law in place, can’t remember it at the moment, that states that the manufacturer has to prove that the part installed caused the failure. But always confirm with your dealership in the event you are concerned.
So why doesn't Honda put these cans on stock???
Because Honda want you to believe that their products are perfect.
Pretty surprised DI stinks as much as it does bc the manufacturers sure pumped it up when it was released...
non turbo dont need a caught can
Should have weighed the oil catch can, then clean it and weigh it.
@@YuriyMotso This is what comes from the PCV valve on the crankcase. There shouldn't be metal shavings because the oil is vaporized and condenses in the can. Any metal shavings should be in your oil filter only. You can send it off for analysis and see what's in it though. It might be contaminated with gasoline.
What a scam artist! Imho
What you mind by that? you think is not necessary to install one oil catch can?
Over 100,000 miles, that is an engine killer
It would have been interesting to establish the density of the fluid and compare it to the density of the oil in the crankcase and to water. My point being that much of what was captured could be water and soot that is a normal byproduct during warm up and not as likely to stick to the back of valves. Just a thought.
Love the insight you give the Ridgeline community! Your videos are great. I’ll definitely be needing a catch can on my ‘21. Thanks for all you do.
Wow-did not expect to see that much oil! I will consider installing one of these.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences to Ridgeline G2 community. Very useful and makes ownership more fun and enjoyable.
BTW I installed a vcm muzzler on my BE and it completely stopped the vibration/noise that happens every time the vcm kicks in. However it did slightly hurt my mpg. Worth it though to stop the wear it must place on an engine.
Thanks for the video and explanation of how the catch can works. I had never heard of it before this video.
oil catch can ftw!
Great video so much content
Thank you!
Interesting video. Thanks.
Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for the vid!
Much depends on usage. Short trips will fill it faster than long trips
Thank you again for the follow up video
I just bought a 2024 Honda Ridgeline and it seems like a good idea to install one thanks for the wisdom
Should i vent my catch can? You know the breather on top of the catch can... whould i install it?
Great video….will need to get one!!
Just bought 2024 black edition
My 2grfe Toyota V6 catches a lot too
Why don't you see the air filter on the oil catch can?
I am thinking about getting one.
Definitely need this now
Wouldn't it be great if the catch can was clear? Then you wouldn't need a dip stick.
Nice catch.
Thanks
Do you have a link for this can? Thanks. I'll be getting one for my 2010 RL.
amzn.to/3JSXLsW
Thanks for the info!! Hope I win. Either way I am getting this done!!
I get roughly about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of oil, water, fuel and whatever nonsense per oil change in the summer.... Winter. Check it more often. Mine filled and froze due to water/moisture/condensation. (Not an evil energy can) the one I'm going to install next is.
Hmmm.....My question is: Just how much "Stuff" did this basic catch can miss catching. I believe that there is a way to make these catch-cans much more effective but this involves some researching. But in the meantime, at least this stuff didn't make it back thru the engine.
What happened to the oil air filter you installed on your last video?
I didn’t keep the air filter on. I showed it as an option of how to install. For my daily use I do not use the air filter. Keeping it a closed system.
I have a 2021 white BE and this would be awesome to have!!!!
Do you think that manufacturers have no idea about this?
I bet they know about it and they surely adapted the engine for this oil, so what if catching it causes more harm than letting it be as it is?
Because if manufacturer saw problem in that oil, he would have installed such oil catch directly in factory (considering it is really easy and cheap), right?
