  • At the 2017 ASIA convention Dan met Michael Cabot IV, a 21 year old who has only been building guitars for 6 months and has already made nearly dozen! Visit Mike's shop to see how he's set up, his Stuart Mossman necks, and maybe hear a John Denver cover too.

Is there anything that warms an old fella's heart more than meeting a young one who's Got It--the thing that can't be taught or bought: the vision, the gift, the sacred flame, whatever you want to call it. We come and go but the Craft lives on!

I hope this young man realizes the honor that has been given to him: to have such a great luthier as Dan Earlewine take an interest in his story and his future career. Good luck and all success to you as you begin your life as a luthier, Mr. Cabot.

Great Dan, I was thinking when I watched the video you met this kid I'd love to know more about him. What a guy! 6 months that’s incredible. A real joy to watch someone with such passion for what they do, a God given talent for it and a work ethic to match. And if that’s not good enough, he sits down and gives us a fantastic John Denver tribute. I’m not jealous at all, really I'm not 🤥. Well done sir, I wish you all the best in your future journey to a master craftsmen.

Many moons ago, I had a job making high quality banjos in small workshop the UK. A machine we used a lot was an Alexander pantograph engraver; this was used for jobs like cutting/inlaying peal and cutting headstock shape. An example of how useful this machine might be is inlaying a pearl name in ebony. This would involve 1, Drawing letters. 2, Using drawing on 1/1 scale to route template. 3, Alter scale and use template to cut letters from peal (glue peal to board with water soluble glue). 4, Change cutting bit and use template to route ebony to accept pearl (changing the size of bit gives a snug fit). 5, Glue in letters with glue/ebony dust mix Start to finish putting 'StewMac' in peal on a headstock would take a couple of hours.

Very inspiring vid. Even as a (former) teacher, or in fact, especially as a (former) teacher, I really liked to hear that he (Michael) taught himself building guitars by watching vids on the internet and then went to build guitars himself. The new way of learning; autodidact/self-learner. I like that. Keep on doing what you're doing, as long as you like doing it! :-D ;-)

tMattLZ I'm in sorta the same boat- it is expected that I go to college in my family, but I really just want to make instruments. However I hope the marketing degree will help me make more than the median salary of a guitar maker who's is reportedly $15,000 over the line of poverty

I am glad to see your out there encouraging a young luthier, and seems to have an excellent attitude to go along with his enthusiasm. Locally, one of his custom guitars is for sale for the low price of $600, and it looks just like a Martin. Perhaps, its from a kit? I am thinking about buying it, but I haven't seen it yet and his age and mere 5 years of experience is the only negatives about this potential purchase. Maybe , I will just go for it.... if it only had a warranty.

Mossman necks!!?? IIRC they were a proprietary bolt-on type of arrangement... I wonder what he was going to do with them? Way back in the 70s I briefly owned a Mossman, I think it was a Great Plains model... what a guitar that was; it blew away my friends' Martin dreds volume wise...
