Forest Whitaker did a good job as a bad-ass jock. He always looked like he was ready to kick some ass, and he later did against the opposing team - sending many of the football players to the hospital. Who knew he would end up being a high-level actor who played a lot of intelligent, introspective and complex characters?

Speaking of Sean Penn, my Wife and I just watched
"At Close Range" (absolute ***GEM*** ) !
That movie was SO underrated by the film critics.
Penn and Walken were great in that movie.
Last week we also watched Vision Quest, Karate Kid, Fast Times, ET, Poltergeist, and Top Gun.
We totally went on a 1980's trip down memory lane.
Many bags of Pop Secret Homestyle popcorn.
I had gone nuts buying DVD movies, Concerts, and Stand up comedy, and now have a vast collection of nearly 1,000 discs.
Not letting this modern day bullshit and daily bad news bombard us and bring us down.
Folks, try and steer clear of the 24 hour news cycle. Too much bullshit with politics, covid-19, kids out of school, border crisis, vaccinations, and a cargo ship.
My elderly Father constantly has news on all day and I can't help but overhear some of this constant droning of bad news and attempts to divide America by any means possible.
So we watch the classics instead.
I figure if I can't do anything about any of this bullshit happening (according to the news) then why watch it ?

Yes, At Close Range is one of the best films that's slipped through the cracks. I first looked it up in a book of movie reviews a few years after its theatrical run. At least one critic liked it a lot, but it didn't make much of a splash when it came out, and it never made regular syndicated or basic cable rotation as I recall. So it's one of those movies that was just soon forgotten. Most people I knew had never heard of it.

The reason the movie still works is because they don't overdo the stereotypes. Forest Whitaker is obviously the jock but he's not a jerk. He's tough and he obviously would fight if he's provoked but unless you're actually in his way he doesn't really care. Too many movies overdid the high school stereotypes.

I just went to their concert with 38 Special the other day. It's cool that you're on RUclips. And you're talking about Forest Whitaker, maybe he really was great at football?

Does anyone know anything about that restaurant or store behind them that clearly says "Potato" in the name (orange bubble letters)? Figured it had to be some 80s restaurant that maybe dealt in potatoes but for the life of me I can't find any reference to it online. Now my curiosity is just killing me.

I always thought the movie wasmade 1979-1980 for the longest time... Didn't think it was 1982.

More 1980s flashbacks for me, this scene always gives me a laugh, "No, I don't have any Blue Oyster Cult, I ate 34 pairs last time around, where were you?" Also, the line, "Wow, I thought he only flew in for games" gets at the professionalization of amateur sports in a humorous way.

I looked through most of the posts but I don't see anyone comment about Damone messing up the line. It always sounded to me like he says "Blue Oyster Color" not "Blue Oyster Cult". Am I just hearing that because I have listened several times over. Nice job Kenny, you are memorable for a small role.

Funny, I've watched the movie countless times and I never thought that until I saw your comment! It DOES kind of sound like that's what he says but I'm pretty sure he does say "cult", I think it's just the way he says it that makes it sound like "color". But now I am going to replay this a bunch of times just to make sure, and it's just an excuse to hear Damone's sexy voice! Hehe
