i'm listening in 2024 from Australia and this brings up so many emotions, sadness being one that the world is losing its way...concerts like this unite people and we need far more of them...wonderful!
Elgar completely captured the true essence of England and the English way inside this piece. It absolutely bursts with our vibrant happy culture and our sharp wit at every moment, if only he knew how proud he makes us 74 years after his death and how he will continue to do so for ever...
As a proud Prussian (German) i have to say that this piece of music is amongst my favourites, just pure class. i always watch the night at the proms. amazing
I am a Singaporean, Singapore was discovered by a British by the name of Sir Stamford Raffles. We are who we are today because of the British Empire. Watching the Last Night of the Proms is so amazing. How I wish Singapore has such traditions. Well I can only hope one day I myself will be able to attend at least once in my lifetime.
This has to be the greatest feel good piece of music ever written. To be in The Albert Hall with thousands roaring this song would bring tears to the eyes, hairs on the back of the neck and a massive feeling of being British. A trult outstanding work. Apparently after he wrote it Elgar told a close friend that he had written a piece of music that will blow their socks off. He was right. Gets me every time. A truly wonderful work
when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life. tears well in my eyes when i hear this amazing piece of music, every time, its quite simple...British is best
fantastic, i was in the crowd at Hyde Park. Whilst the orchestra version of staw wars was awesome, the pomp and circumstance `land of hope and glory` was by far my high light of the day. fantastic.
nice audio. many thanks for posting. Whenever I want cheer myself up, I look for "Last Night at the Proms" clips. I hope someone posts the entire last night program for 2009. It's just not broadcast in the USA. I don't know why not, people here would love it.
There are times that I do hate living in this country, but I have to say songs like this help remind me of the beauty and history that our country really does have. I have to say even at 20 years old Im excited for the Queens jubilee and the olympics! hopefully they will help us forget about the current doom and gloom that is surrounding us at the moment!
So.... why at the age of 20 did you "hate living in this country"? Why? Please. I want to know. What experience did you have of living or visiting other countries? Mmm? At the age of 20? Here we are...10 years on...the doom and gloom is even worse than back then, is it not? Ask yourself why. You were 20, ten years ago...but tell me...what did YOU DO to change the situation from then to now? Hate to say it, but the obvious conclusion is that you and your generation have made the country even more "hate-able" from the perspective of a 20 year now in 2023.... Or Not? A 20 year old in the UK today has less hope than you did! I'm an old man now... but by the age of twenty.... I had visited over 30 countries: None for any great length of time.... But I observed. I took on board what I saw and reflected on how different it was in the UK. And my opinion was: The UK was not a bad country to be in. (Even though as a child I played in bomb craters in the 60's.) That was 50 years ago......so many of the countries I visited in my youth ...in my 20's. Remain in abject starvation and poverty. You are now 30 years old. I sincerely hope you are somewhat wiser than ten years ago. Sincerely. Take care.
If only I could be there once in my life! Britain is my most favourite country and the last night regularily brings tears to my eyes. God bless this precious stone set in the silver sea.
"No Surrender"? Really....But we did! Several times since those days!.. To all and sundry. Hitler couldn't cross the channel with all his might..... Yet tiny boats arrive daily and defeat the people and the character of the British way of life on a daily basis. Shameful. Shocking. And the Quislings in Westminster...do NOTHING! The Blair Legacy?
Such a powerful rendition! I am not British but I have wonderful friends who are! This happens to be one of my all-time favorite compositions. So inspirational and powerful! Thank you ~0:-D
I am proud to be British, though I am Chinese by blood. I MUST go to the Last of the Proms this year. If I cannot even do such a thing in my lifetime, I can hardly call myself a true BRIT! Sir Edward Elgar, with the love and pride of his country, exhausted his mind to making such wonderful compositions. He sacrificed for us without dying!
I am Flemish myself and see a few Flemish Lions waved about. Then again I am not surprised by seeing so many different flags. In essence we aren't very different, we have a different upbringing, we have a different language but our goals remain the same. Each human being tries to create a happy life, a loving life...both for themselves and their offspring. The sooner mankind realises this...we might finally get some real peace on this "cursed" rock :).
i love it it makes you proud i think this should be played with huge speakers from dover cliff to show all other countries that we are proud as a nation.
When I was visiting your glorious nation, an aged cockney in London used a phrase which struck at my heart. He pointed at something and told me that it reminded him of "my queen". Despite their failings, their mistakes...to be a monarch's subject must be such a wonderfully familiar relationship. To have a tradition of leadership, leaders in which one can vest national pride and honour...identify with. It is a wonderful thing; don't lose it because of temporary disatisfaction.
I see the flags of South Africa, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Ireland, places from all over the world here. This is our most nationalistic celebration and we invite everyone in as friends to share in our celebration of hope, justice and fairness, regardless of nationality, creed or colour. That is the nobility of the last night of the Proms, that is why we call Britain Great. As an Ex-Pat Brit it gives me a real sense of pride.
We are no longer British but our ancestors were. We share with you english people the past. We are the children fo those who left England as soldiers, workers, miners, sailors and had to stand for England overseas. We are all over the world. No longer britsh, but with and english heart. God save the Queen.
@HANGZHOUWQ I am an old Australian (my children are 5th generation Australian) and I Thank You HANGZHOUWQ you are very wise for such a young person. Our system and country was simply perfect when I was young, and that is why people wanted to immigrate from all countries to Australia. Let us keep it the way it has always worked; before it is too late. Best regards, Long live the Queen. Maureen - Australia.
I am a Canadian. I have ansestors from Scotland, England, Scandanavia, Germany, Russia plus a smattering of Native Red Indian. I am proud of all of them as it has made me what I am, a typical Canadian. I am adding my negative vote to TalonMercenary. Grow up and join the Global Village.
Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free, How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee? Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set; God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet, God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet.
I think this video is impressive, it shows in an outstanding way how British are patriotic...you would never see that in France for example. Attending to one of these proms would be huge !
@TheLahness I'm an American high schooler and I'm about to graduate in May, so I guess I'll be hearing this song, lol. I did some research and the composer of the song was invited to Yale University to perform this song, and since then, we've been using this as our graduation anthem.
Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free, How shall we extol thee, Who are born of thee? Wider still and wider Shall thy bounds be set; |: God, who made thee mighty, Make thee mightier yet! :|
Thumbs up if you think this should be the English national anthem! Also, I'm not English - I'm Irish and this really should be. It's proud, it's triumphant just like the British Empire used to be!
I love you brits... i want your nationality, i listen to "Land of hope and glory" for two days... All united! I know that you don't like us the french, but in our case we are ready to live with the english people..
Like a proud music that draws men on to die Madly upon the spears in martial ecstasy, A measure that sets heaven in all their veins And iron in their hands. I hear the Nation march Beneath her ensign as an eagle's wing; O'er shield and sheeted targe The banners of my faith most gaily swing; Moving to victory with solemn noise, With worship and with conquest, and the voice of myriads.
Is it weird that when I graduated from High School, they were playing this and I was singing the lyrics? My whole family is English, so I was getting some really funny looks from my classmates who could hear me. ENGLAND FOREVER.
i'm listening in 2024 from Australia and this brings up so many emotions, sadness being one that the world is losing its way...concerts like this unite people and we need far more of them...wonderful!

Though I am not British, I truly love this song, Rule Brittania and Pomp and Circumstance.
I've watched this piece, all and all over again. And there's always tears in my eyes... Even though I'm not British.

So well said my friend. Thank you.
When you look at the circus of republics and their 5 minute "leaders".... It all makes sense.
I do love how an English patriotic song has become a very popular graduation march in other countries. Makes me proud to be English :)
its beautiful the way the crowd hums to the song, i really do love that.
Just remember this is the greatest country in the world. Been away 11 years and miss it every day. So proud to be British.
