Great video. I have open feed barrels for my garden and the dogs. I have a 50 gallon food grade barrel that I will install to collect rainwater to filter in m y Big Berkey. Thanks for the video!
Super to see you engage your kids in a meaningful project. Also, helpful and like you said this barrel avoided the landfill. Thank you. However, I'd like to know what you do with the barrel in the winter?
Nice video. what did you think of that diverter kit versus your DIY setup on your first rain barrel? Do you fin much shingle gravel or leaves make there way into the barrel when going through the downspout? Thanks
Hi Paul! I really like the diverter kit because everything came in one package and it worked perfectly for that location. The DIY setup was necessary because it was on our deck and the gutter did not have an extended downspout for the diverter. It's extremely satisfying watching the water falling into the barrel though 😀. As far as shingle gravel and leaves, I have leaf guards on my gutters so leaves don't end up in the barrel. Shingles do end up in the barrel but not enough where it obstructs water from coming out. Hope that helps!
Hi there. Great video Could you pls further explain the holes around the top to prevent mosquito larvae ? I thought if you put holes then they can get in ??
Absolutely brilliant to involve ur son in this project! Really enjoyed getting educated about setting up my 1st rain barrel. Thank You!

Man this video was just what I needed to see to set up my collection barrels, thank you for taking the time to upload this video, just a great idea!!
Glad we could help!
You should have drilled the hole in the gutter pipe a few inches higher so it would flow in much better.
By the way, Issac actually did ALL the work!
Yes he did :)
We have 5 barrels just like this that we hope to convert into rain barrels

Hi there. Great video

I could be wrong but I think those holes are to prevent water build up on top of the rain barrel. I was wondering the same thing.
@hotdog748 is correct. It prevents water from building up on top. The water escapes down the sides of the barrel.
Where did you get the kit from?
Put a bigger spicket on it so it fills a bucket fast.
You should put the mosquito drops in the barrel!😊
Skip the spigot, 1 gal. a minute ( too slow) Use pvc 2 inch valve. Unless you are ok with watching a 5 gallon bucket take forever to fill.
What size drill bit did you use to make the hole for the garden hose?
Hi Wylie. The drill bit size for the garden hose/spigot is 1 1/4".
Cool vid
