Dear Marcelia, Tovia Singer's videos can explain to you why you never felt G-d in churches. I was very much like you until I started watching his videos. Now G-d is so close to me that I feel his presence with each breath.
I took a class in Medical Ethics at San Francisco State University with Jacob Needleman in the '80's. What a wondrful man! A great thinker! Later, when I was living in China at the time of the Tianan'men Square massacre of 1989, his tape set on the Baghavad Gita got me through the violence of those times. Thank you Dr. Needleman! You were there for me at a powerful time then, and of course today as I watch this! If anyone out there knows him, please tell him what a great contribution his part of God has made to this world.
I think one of the reasons that the great Masters like Jesus etc., avoid using the word God is because inevitably someone is bound to ask what seek to convey by it, or what they mean by it, because it has as many meanings as there are men (human beings)
@@brawlpups3517 I rathe suppose that great masters cannot convey what they may have to covey to *all* because not all are capable of understanding them; anything for everyone is for no-one ; to paraphrase uncle Sam in his cups: "If it's all right, why then nothing is right which is one of the shibboleths for filtering out those that will never understand; only death and taxes are for all.
Thanks for posting this interview. Best audio books "Sayings of the Buddha" "Lao Tso Tao Te Ching" "The Bhagavad Gita" Help me thru some long commutes!!! Thank You Mr. Needleman!!!
"Who" am I? - Is a particularly silly question because what possible answer could it have given that it means which of a number of possible candidates? What am I? - Is infinitely preferable and makes more sense. What possible answer could there be to the asinine question "who am I?"
Indeed, brother in the video. These principles resonate with the greatest of principles, to Love God with heart mind and soul and Love your neighbor, as your self. Let us take a honest consideration of this principle, reported as the Principle, of principles . Shall we?
True. I learned about this when I was 17 in the midst of the Civil War in El Salvador. Being scared and hungry is not the best time to reflect about philosophy. But it did give me a moral compass to follow and helped me understand the difference between form and essence. Hopefully it will be helpful to you too.
We less have a God element 'in' us - rather are part of the force men call God. Which still holds the energy pointing to the creaters - men. Univers (not the All) is creating energy ... If your soul connected to it, you're capable to create anything if you allow yourself to believe your perception - the truth of this oneness
I like him. He seems authentic and with much of meaning to share. But I can´t help but notice how he several times referred to ´ýoung men´ and men when talking about students or seekers...as if he didn´t also realize the other half of the human race (young women and women) might be included in this search for meaning and spiritual cultivation. Yeah, language matters in a way.
The Coffee Nut That doesn’t sound quite right because we still have to sort it out. Like the founding fathers of the US would be considered deists but the Bible still makes it clear God and Satan are both real entities. Not everyone agrees with this either, but they oppose each other.
He is dead, not all men can grasp the idea of god or understand it identically. You have your god or gods or that which is more important to you than anything else at any given moment, and where and what that is is a matter of fact not belief or opinion; it may be what is called self -calming or I-am-right or just the mechanical reactions of thee emotions(like/dislike) function to which sll men are the abject slaves.
what a silly question @ 23:50 mins! "do u think there's something in the jewish soul /psyche...?" Believe it or not, we are all "special" and we all yearn for meaning.
Except for "we" being imaginary. When "we" has a headache, then, and only then can you speak of "we", which is a form of universal and all universals are necessarily imaginary.
TheLililitu "How does he know his idea is necessary for mankind? He talks of a higher reality and a higher state of consciousness, but these seem opaque." He's just enlightened is all.....
TheLililitu " Hmm. How do you know he's enlightened?" Once you've been slightly enlightened yourself, then you know truth, when you hear it. This man speaks truth.
***** He writes in "What is God?" that there is two types of knowledge -- gnosis, and rational/factual knowledge. I read his "Heart of Philosophy," and I was intrigued. However, part of me is skeptical.
It all one big mind fook, religion and spirituality is nothing but the what "IF" If existence has a ultimate purpose or meaning behind it then life itself is that purpose and meaning. To ask the question what is God is like asking what is this existence and what is it's purpose or meaning. If God exists then he is unknowable just like ultimate we can't even begin to imagine what the purpose and meaning of our existence is here in this world. It's like watching shadows on a wall and believing that the shadows are the substance of reality. All that exists is nothing but a dream within the mind of the dreamer and who is the dreamer of of all that exists? That is what we would call GOD.
Yes that pretty much as to be correct must it not? Utterly futile meaningless questions to which there could not possibly be any answer whatsoever, or so says Mr grumpy who apparently sitting in the boss seat at the moment yes? How many of these Mr grumpies are there in your cast or crew? Is it not evident to you that whatever you are, it is not one but many or rather need? One day one of them is sitting in the boss seat, and the next another, and the fascinating thing is that they are all mutually contradictory. That is true is it not?
Exactly how would you go about answering that meaningless question? What can you directly immediately personally experience of "we all? If I were you I would avoid universals they can only possibly be imaginary - some vague generalisation that cannot be directly immediately personally experience (as directly and personally as pain) What can you experience of experience of other experiencers? When "we" has a headache, and the men came you speak of we or "us all Is there a "we"? - If so exactly how do you directly immediately personally experience it? You can't, thus it is imaginary.
*All*men(human beings) can , like all universals only be imaginary, point one, and point two what the devil is meaning? How might you or anyone go about discovering for what *all* men search? there are seemingly billions of them so your chances of discovering what is common to all men are rather slim. Probably best to avoid universals and sweeping generalisations which can only possibly be imaginary.
You cannot answer that question with a finite mind that does not even understand its own consciousness or how life emerged on planet earth. You invoke the word God and right away you have images the narrow it down...how about we start with something we can acturally understand...
if Needleman`s philosophy was overturned by Zen then like so many shallow seekers he never understood philosophy. the tragic ambitiousness of a spiritually acquisitive late twentieth century ego. this is insecurity hiding behind the veil of an intellect.
I never felt God in churches but in nature,in silence and in opening my heart to the wonder of creation.

What a great and smart man, I feel blessed to hear his views and words thank you for showing us this video!
Religion should teach us to ask the right question: "who am i?" and start his spiritual journey alone till he reaches his Truth.

The afterlife is real. This life is an illusion.
no. they are both real. and both illusory.
one problem I have with "afterlife" discussions, especially among religious apologism, is that eschatology almost never discusses the "BEFORE life".
This life is real too. It is just not what it appears to be.
No evidence for an afterlife. Only in a book. No reason why we should live on after this life, enjoy it whilst you're here :-)
