    My name is Erik Wesner and I'm not Amish. Back in 2004, I met the Amish while selling books. Since then, I've visited 5,000+ Amish homes & dozens of Amish communities. My book on Amish business, Success Made Simple: An Inside Look at Why Amish Businesses Thrive, was published in 2010. I run the Amish America website: amishamerica.com/

    Very strange how the editing cut off the end of each segment abruptly or started it in the middle of a conversation.. but I enjoyed the content. Thanks.

    Happy New Year to you folks.
    Here in Ireland January 6th is Nollaig na mBan (pronounced "Nol-ig na-man") and is widely recognised even by foreigners living here...like me! The English translation is 'Women's Little Christmas' and along with a special church mass the shops and hospitality sectors now make a big thing of it. Essentially, the woman of the house doesn't lift a finger and her husband and children make sure 'mammy' has a relaxed day or is even pampered with a spa day! It's sort of a big thank you for all the extra work involved with Christmas Day etc..

    I've found the bent and dent places to be poor value myself. We have one near us, run by a former Amish with Amish girls for staff. The food was often stale tasting and nauseating. I remember some protein and energy bars tasting decent, though, and their canned soup was decent. During the Covid situation, the store ran out of name brand stuff and got cheaper generic food that really wasn't any better than Walmart prices. Once I bought a large glass jar of coffee. The lid was broken. The workers taped the lid on with strong tape. I didn't notice it was taped down, and tried to unscrew the lid. The entire top of the coffee jar broke off. I gashed my hand on it badly. I suppose all my "savings" from the forays to this store were spent on the emergency room bill.
    One positive note though....a local Amish family had baked goods outside the store on Fridays...bought some great freshly baked pies from them.

      That sounds rough! Sorry to hear. Yes not all Amish business experiences are great. Pies and cookies can be hit and miss but sounds like you found a good source.

    If a tooth pops right out, chances are there's a lot of pus behind the tooth (severely infected).

    Why would anyone have their teeth pulled at such a young age?

    • @AmishAmerica
      @AmishAmerica  5 месяцев назад +1

      Some Amish do it for cost reasons and as the upshot of poor prior dental care. It's a lot cheaper to do that and get dentures (sometimes ones even made by an Amish person). But this tends to be a "plainer" Amish solution, not "the" Amish solution.

      @@AmishAmericaI just found out that one of my aunts had all her teeth pulled when she was in high school. I knew the test of my aunts and uncles of the same age group, as well as my parents, all got dentures between the ages of 21-30. They were all born between the 1930s-1950s. Both of my parents came from big families. But it wasn't lack of dental care so much as lack of certain nutrients and minerals in the local soil and water. The pediatric dentist my Mom took us to has talked about that every time the City Council debates the value of adding fluoride to the city water supply. He was the first pediatric dentist in town, in the 1970s, and he has Before and After charts. Some localities have naturally occurring fluoride, but here in Michigan we lack a lot of nutrients and minerals in the soil and water that are beneficial to dental health (and other health needs). I only learned all this after you posted that Amish dentist video. Of course your video is the first thing I thought of when I learned it. I'm not sure when toothpaste manufacturers started adding fluoride, but I'd guess it was the late 1950s or early 1960s. I vividly recall the Crest toothpaste commercials that played during Saturday morning cartoons, where kids ran home to tell their Mom's, "Look, Mom! No cavities!" I always wondered how those children were able to go to the dentist without their parents 😂
