I always think about how Korra choosing to be separate from her animal companion is a really strong indicator of her mental struggle. The Avatar's animal companion is with them always, and is practically a part of them. Distancing Korra from Naga was a really powerful way of showing her disconnect from her own identity, memories, personality - and almost a way to punish herself even further for her failures. Consider Aang's rage and pain being apart from Appa, as an example.
This was a good episode for also seeing how much things have changed with Korra, Asami, and Mako. Korra has been writing to Asami for three years (with the exception of the past six months), whereas we learn that Korra never wrote to Mako or Bolin (5:40) in all that time - not even a hello. Korra has been discussing many things with Asami (not sure how many Avatars would trust another person to know they can't access the Avatar State), and clearly has grown to trust Asami a lot and share her emotional turmoil with her to a greater extent than most other people. It also shows that Korra wanted to stay updated on what Asami has been doing too. We see Korra show her concern for Asami at 5:55, and see Asami get upset that Korra could misjudge her emotional intelligence. Asami even says "You don't get to disappear for three years and then act like you know what's best for me," which shows her pain at Korra being away for so long. It also reminds me of the heated arguments Korra and Mako used to have, when Mako would try to provide caring advice and Korra would flare up a little. After that, Korra replies "It's not like I planned to be gone that long. I wanted to come back, but I never felt ready until now," which really seems like she feels a little guilty about being apart for an unexpected length of time. Mako kind of sits back and watches it all unfold, it's a lot of information for him and a new dynamic to catch up on.
Why I like Kuvira as a villain so much is because she is so much like leaders from the real world/our history and book 4 is the most closely linked to what it is like in our world. Kuvira started like a lot of "freedom fighters", where she was doing it because its the best thing for her people (the earth kingdom) which was broken after Zaheer killed of the queen and sent everything into disarray. I believe she initially always intended for this to be a temporary thing, hence why she even wanted Sue to lead them (she didn't want to do it initially) but when Sue declined, she felt it was her duty. As time went on and her power grew, I feel like she became more set in ruling, and didn't want to give it back to a royal line for the whole place to be "broken" again and felt she could do a better job. Then the freedom fighter started to become more of a tyrant, as she imprisoned any one objecting to her, threatening people to join her or else and also at the same time the "Great Uniter's" power and army kept growing. Finally, as is the case in History, once the tyrants power became almost absolute, she starts marginalizing people that doesn't fit with her view of what the Earth Empire should be (so just earth benders - imprisoning any other people who were not initially from the earth kingdom, like the firebenders and waterbenders). It has a lot of parallels with tyrants like Hitler and Napoleon
The thing I like about Korra is every season is a spoon-fed lesson about governments. 1st season is about class struggle using benders and non benders as class distinctions in the avatar society. The second season atleast at the beginning with the civil war subplot is about Church and State. The 3rd season is about the potential merits and inherent flaws in anarchy, and the last season is exactly as you point out. It's about how failed revolution can lead to ultra-nationalism and authoritarian rule as the populace seeks stability during the chaos.
I love watching the difference in Bolin's bending when he works with lava - it's different to the usual earthbending forms and also different to metalbending movements. It's more similar to waterbending, requiring more fluid movements and a more willowy combat style. Due to its own nature, lava can spread and cause more damage when left unattended, which also makes it similar to firebending in some ways. Bolin's knowledge of earthbending, waterbending and firebending from his time with Mako, Korra, and in probending, is probably a major reason he's so quick to learn more about lavabending. When earthbenders, waterbenders, and firebenders were more separated just a few decades ago, a potential lavabender could have struggled a lot more.
It is also imo reflective of Bolin's personality - instead of being rough and rigid and firm, with that pinnacle being metalbending, he's instead very loose and "go with the flow" in terms of both his fighting style and personality. He's probably the most carefree earthbender since Bumi and, fittingly, Ghazan.
16:42 Look at the impact of this show - the GASP we all had when we realised Kuvira was attacking the centre of all natural and spiritual connection on this planet.
Varrick for all his selfishness does have good qualities. He is a genius when it comes to inventing and has moments when he likes to help. He is eccentric though which makes me wonder a few things. When we first meet him way back then he was upset that he was lied to by someone and that everyone else just clapped, like they were just trying to please him. That tells me 1) people have become yes-men all his life to get on his good side, and 2) he actually prefers when people are straight with him. That says to me he has probably grown up with people catering to him because he is a genius, and so probably developed a self-centered side because of that, but he actually does have a good streak in him that wants to help. It is just that he needs to grow out of the spoiled side he developed. They've shown he has started to change thru-out this season, which I actually really enjoy seeing. I agree so much on your views on Bolin, he is growing. For still being early 20's its nice seeing the maturity in all the gang.
