Blasting Granite rock in Belgrave South for a garage site

- Pete from Belgrave South was rapidly running out of parking space so the decision was made to level some underutilised ground for a new parking area, he knew that there was some Granite around, but this this huge piece could not have been is a worse place. 😢 The 12 Tonne excavator that cut the site came prepared with a hydraulic breaker, the operator gave it his best shot but the breaker did not prevail. Demolition Dave summoned to provide a quick and appropriate solution, some care was required as this rock was only 4 Meters from the house at the closest point. The maximum vibration levels were were designed to be below the 10mm/S PPV Australian Standard level and no amount of flying rock or loud bangs would be acceptable. All blasts were measured @ below 7mm/s PPV and the generous amount of soft fill cover and blast mats kept it all under control. Another rock problem solved safely and cost effectively without any complaints from the neighbours.

I used to install septic tanks in the Ozarks and had to blast from time to time....this is EXACTLY how you do it. When the shot goes off, you just get a little bit of "lift"...and that's it! If you are throwing debris into the air, the shot is too hot or you didn't put enough burden over it. Good Job!
Thanks PR
I lived in Mt. Isa in north-west Queensland for 12 years and most of that place is built on rock. Every now and then, we could hear some one blasting at the north of town and that always meant someone in town had died. The ground out at the cemetery was so hard, they had to drill and fire it just to get a grave dug. Talk about waking the dead!
I am currently facing a problem with some rock about the size I. This video. I would like to have it blasted. I can find anyone in my area. What should I search on the Internet.
@@Joshua-ex8sx search for demolition or septic tank installers....
@@JamesHolben thanks for the info I will give that a try
My first job working for a blaster was to build mats, He showed my how to do it, he pointed to a pile of old truck tires, cable , a saws all and told me to go to work.
Hard work isn't it David. Were they steel belted tires and if so, what type of saw did you use?
1K+👍's up dave thanks again for taking us all along with you for the rest of the demolition
You bet
Look at that poor broom handle falling over
DamoDoesAll. That is a crime in Australia, so don't tell anyone it happened.
Made me smile when about 2 secs after the 6 hole shot a merker pole about 2m from the rock decided to gentle fall over.👍👍👍
These sound more like Earth-farts rather than explosions but great work!
Made the nearby town think they were getting nuked for a little bang😂
They would have thought they were being nukes if we did not have all of that cover on it Max.
Very neatly done, sir. The man knows his business.
Thank you.

I think the siren noise in more likely to attract the curious than keep them away ... not everyone knows what a blast siren is.
Im gessing if you live around thare you figer it out
I need to experiment such.Any more ideas please??
Yeah, just don't.
Dave, your warning siren bothered the neighbors more than your shots!
Often the case James.
Beautiful and well controlled.
Thank you kindly!
nice neat rows, great delays with non-el. Do you make your own blast mats out of steel cable and old tires?
Hi David, Thanks for watching, these mats were made out of old truck tires cut into strips, woven and bolted all accept one that is made out of strips of old conveyor belting.
WELL DONE. Nice work with the damping - that's precision work.
Thanks Doug.
Looks like you enjoy your work! Not everybody gets to blow rocks up! I have many rocks in my fields I need to get rid of, maybe I will try one of those micro-blasters!
I understand the New Hampshire is Granite city, depending on the rock size you might need something a bit bigger Bob
Yeah, LOT of granite here! Most of them in the fields are about four or five feet around, mostly what I want to do is take the tops off to a depth of about 12". The lawnmower blades do not play well with the rocks...
We do have several in the fields that are about 8 feet high and I would guess 60 feet around, those will have to stay!
@@newhampshire-bob1604 - the small ones can be capped by digging back the edges a bit and drilling in at 45 degrees from several locations around the rock and loading a small explosive charge in each and firing simultaneously. Expanding chemical cracking agent will do the job also.
Looking good Dave, (AD) It pains me to inform you that you WILL HAVE TO GET A DRONE for our viewing pleasure. Really good to see more of what your doing on your job. Looking forward to the next one.
Working on that one.
Hi Dave, Nice work on all your videos showing your expertise and attention to detail !!! I notice you pay particular attention to hole depth. Do you drill your holes a specific amount deeper than say the elevation of the bottom of the proposed foundation footing ?
Yes and no, as a general rule when using millisecond delay detonators you would sub drill 1/3 of the hole spacing and this ensures that there is minimal high spots, If you can get away with using det cord and fire every hole at exactly the same time there is a tendency to shear perfectly level at the bottom of the holes if you get the loading rate just right.
Great work, well done guys!
Hello Dave. were they cast boosters you primed some of those holes with? wat sort of dets did you use there
No, they all had a 1/3 of a 32mm emulsion plug and a dash of ANFO, dets were Orica 3.6m "Gold dets" (nonel, 400ms down hole with a 25ms surface delay clip).
What's the small amount of white powder you're adding on top of the primary before you put the rest of the stemming in the hole?
ANFO
The thing I love is the whole understated nature of the event. A master of control.... Now let's see one where you totally mess up
Thanks Ben, If I should goof up it puts us behind and as such there is really no time to make a doco
about fixing it. Having said that,I've never really had a catastrophic mess up that has hurt people or caused big damage, The most common blast failure (that can be seen in my next video) is when you get a failure to break up the rock as intended because of 1/ you calculated load of explosives is only just enough and 2/ you have unknowingly drilled through a thin bedding plane of soft material between two layers of rock, the underlying rock is smashed up and you are stuck with a huge undamaged piece on top that wont move. Please like and subscribe for more time lapse and slow mo blasting action.
I know the main purpose of the soft fill and mats is to prevent excessive noise and flying debris but does it make the effects of the blast on the rock weaker or stronger?
I'd like to imagine that all that dirt concentrates it and makes the effect greater but on the other hand you have the shock lifting all of that dirt up and using energy to do so.
The soil cover tends to lessen the effect of the blast, the theory is that the when the compression wave from the detonation meets with the edge of the rock, a lot of the energy is dissipated into the surrounding earth or soil cover. If there is no surrounding earth or cover then the energy in the compression wave is reflected back as a tension wave and this further contributes to the fragmentation.
Nice work Dave. Do you ever have to use a high(er) VoD explosive in very hard rock? Or do you just increase powder factor and tighten spacing/reduce burden etc? I note below that you mention this shot ran 425g/m3. Thanks!
The packaged emulsion is plenty fast enough for any rock I come across Mark, the only thing that faster explosives are really useful for is steel cutting. The 425g/m3 is a bit on the high side and this was chosen as with some of these holes the depth of the hole and the burden are the same and this is generally not a good idea as the hole is likely to eject its stemming. This can be overcome up to a point by upping the load.
Thanks for the detailed reply Dave. Love your videos and pin point technique. I also like the shots you do on rock where they are uncovered etc, very cool. I also like reading about old techniques of busting rock with black powder. Have you heard of the old technique of lighting a fire around the rock/boulder for a couple hours then quenching with water to crack it? Pretty messy I imagine! Cheers
The fire and ice technique works surprisingly well when you feed the fire with a leaf blower and then tip a wheel barrow load of ice water on top. I will have a large black powder shot coming up sometime soon, doing a trial for a guy who quarries dimension stone, just want to lift it up a bit without shattering it. Cheers!
Very interesting! I didn't really think anyone would know/use that old technique. I will keep an eye out for the BP shot too, sounds cool! Cheers
Nicely done. Very professional 👍
any chance you could show off the klaxon you use prior to blasting?
The Klaxon died a while back, Think I need another one of those instead of the regular siren I'm using now.
But... this is RUclips! We were expecting to to a thunderous boom with giant chunks of rock flying through the air and breaking holes in that building!
Your are watching the wrong Demolition Dave video my friend, try this one - ruclips.net/video/FK--7o2bfGI/видео.html several more if you look at the main channel page

Hello SIR, If you could explain a lot better of how you pack the holes? I understand the c-4 plug sizes but you also pack black powder , shaving's other stuff etc.... Reasons for it all etc... of using dett cord instead , for lesser of a boom ?
A lot of good garden rockery at the end ! :)
Oh yeah.
Nice rockery at the end 👍
Why was the capsule sent to the hole with the hole facing the bottom of the hole and not the mouth? (second 0:50 per munite)
- Why did I not reverse prime - I think this is your question. I'm of the opinion that reverse priming is not practical when the length of the detonator is longer than the piece of packaged explosive into which the detonator is inserted, these holes were primed with only 1/3 of a stick of packaged explosive, if you reverse prime then the packaged explosive does not reach the bottom of the hole because the detonator is too long, when you add ANFO this ends up at the bottom of the hole when you want the strongest explosive at the bottom.
What is the name of the device which controls the blast , i means that controller ( a small wooden box )
The small wooden box is called a rack bar exploder. I would not normally use one of these ones as they are an antique and a valuable collectable item these days.
Very well done,
I do you know how far to drill when you have no idea how thick it is, and what are the consequences if you were to drill all the way through it.....
Hi Joe, you would usually drill a bit deeper than you need to break. If you drill right through it is a real pain as you then need to dack fill the hole a bit.
Dave,
I love it when these older videos pop up on my feed.....
Let's you know just how far you've come as a video creator.....
Myself I just love your slo-mo camera. But the drone work is quickly catching up......
Where do you go from there????
Well I don't think I've got the balls to stick a $20,000 slo-mo camera in a drone, damn it'll sure make some killer shots....
So there's the suggestion for when you've got a few hundred thousand dollars just laying around not doing anything.......🤔🤫
I've been thinking about the slowmo carried by the drone, the camera I'm using is a DJI Osmo (AU$599). the main issue I have with it though is that the lens is such a wide angle that it has to be in too close and I don't want the drone that close. Have you seen all of the really old videos Donn - some from last century - ruclips.net/video/VCMjaYfUgKQ/видео.html
What was total expenses to this work??
I can't remember now, this was a few years ago. Probably cost a lot less than it should have.
Do you sell that broken up rocks to someone? Would be very useful in many projects.
I usually get used somewhere.
Odd goings on with videos.
Whilst laid up a few months back, I spent some time watching back though all your videos.
Then just lately, there have been several videos come up in suggestions without the red bar underneath & which I don't recall seeing - this being an example.
So tonight I checked out the whole catalogue of your videos again & there's over 90 I've not seen!
Suppressed by RUclips until you passed 20k viewers perhaps???
I hear you 42, I think it is more sinister, I qualify for shadow banning because my world view does not sit well with big tech, many of the channels that I have followed with similar world view have ongoing problems.

Woo so cool
Thank you Albert.
All the downvotes from clueless muppets expecting a Michael Bay movie...
I just found your channel. Cool stuff Do you hand drill or do you have self propelled drill rig. Have you seen the drill rigs that can be put on a mini excavator?
Hi Brian, I have this unit, built by a friend who is pretty good at fabricating things ruclips.net/video/MkvjqUPpAgU/видео.html and for bigger stuff I just subcontract a drilling company. Yeah we do a lot of hand drilling - not really what I want to do but there is work for people that will do it.
Hi, Dave, what's the blue Dalek in most of your vids?
Hi Roman, the blue thing is a cyclone separator - part of the stone dust vacuum apparatus, it catches all the chips and larger dust particles, before they get to the big red vac on the back of my Hilux. I go to a lot of trouble to capture the stone dust as it is very very bad stuff to get in your lungs.
So I know what a det and booster is, but is he using something Anfo with sand?
The ANFO is a granular explosive.
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast So do you just use ANFO with your det and booster or do you generally use det cord and other products?
Nice job.Not sure if Nonex is distributed in your part of the world, but surely save a lot of time and cost. No cover with sand ,just rubber mats. Also a wide range of cartridges for different applications. Take a look at our videos.
To think it will go to a rock crusher, and be sold back to the owner as gravel to do their driveway and garage foundation?
What are you loading the holes with? Detonator, booster, ANFO prill, rock dust then gravel? The charges seem small for the size of granite but clearly the rock fractured well.
The holes in this piece were all between 500 and 700 mm deep and spaced on a 500mm square pattern, they were loaded with 1/3 of a plug of 32mm packaged emulsion, the longer holes also got a tiny bit of anfo. I added the stone dust after the anfo as a barrier between the anfo and the wet 5mm crushed rock that I was using for stemming as anfo is very hydroscopic and it would suck the moisture out of the stemming in a short time and be ruined by the moisture. Load rate was about 425g/m3 which is a bit on the high side but as the as the hole depth gets closer to equalling the burden and spacing the load rate must increase or the holes will just eject their stemming which is a very costly failure.

Thanks! Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
Where are you from Bryan?
I live near Houston, Texas, USA...about 30 miles North of the city.
Oh' Is that north of the flooded area? I guess you must be doing ok as your surfing the net. Look like a real big mess over there just now.
Sir I like your video... Which type of this blasting
This is hard rock blasting just like they do in quarries and mines everywhere, but on a small scale.
what's the pricetag for a job like this?
If you care to subscribe then I can PM you.
you mentioned PETN the coffee scented explosive!!!
I've never noticed that, not sure that I would want to give it a big sniff.
Micheal Bay would be disappointed haha.
Is that senatel or powerfrag?
It is Senatel and a little bit of ANFO.
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast i have tried senatel only a couple of times. Old habits die hard i guess, use eurodyn for the most And anfo
super 👷👷👌👌💣💥
There are houses built on stones just sitting on the ground.
Dave in italian miners glossary when you use half a stick is saied " fare una smorza" it sound as .... dampen. You use two white powder to complete the charge, is it ANFO ? Nice nonel, I've never used it, I stopped using explosives before it became of common use
Yes Laurence, it is ANFO
Are you using little cast boosters for primers ?
Edit: and loading with ANFO ?
No, just a 1/3 of a plug of 32mm packaged emulsion and a dash of fairy dust (anfo).
Demolition Dave Drilling and Blasting I see. It's very impressive the work you do. Controlled, professional and by the looks of it, good fragmentation. Do you ever shoot quarries or mines ?
Thank you, The quarry drill and blast scene is very difficult to grab a piece of with out a late model, very large and extremely expensive drill rig and it seems that those doing it survive on the thinnest of margins.
Demolition Dave Drilling and Blasting Yeah seems to be that way almost everywhere now. Need to be a multi million dollar outfit just to bid on jobs/contracts. And have "The best" of everything equipment wise...
But anyways keep up the videos man i love them. Always wanted to start my own drill blast outfit doing jobs within close proximity to dwellings and business buildings. 👍
that's what I'm saying! a whole bunch of dirt moving! the clean-up would've been swell!

why waste all the time drilling and blasting? you have equipment, just get a hyd hammer for the one mini and pecker away. 4-5 days of drill, prep, cover, blast. 1-2 days hammer time
The 12 Tonne machine with a breaker had already failed miserably, many people live in places that do not have hard rock like this and don't appreciate that this rock would have turned the nice new chisel on a big machine into a profile that resembled a well used lipstick before lunch time. I am the option of last resort and I only have a job because on some rocks, all other methods fail.
I've farted more joules than that.
