Breaking more hard Granite without explosives

  • As part of a larger housing estate development project I had to bust out a large piece of hard Granite rock to make way for underground services. This is not difficult when you can blast it but on this occasion we were working near a live fiber optic cable and probably blasting was not a really good idea... Expando chemical cracking agent to the rescue again - drill, mix, pour, break.

    Telstra/NBN cable/conduit, etc. is rare to be covered or surrounded by anything, some of the stuff even runs through the tree tops, tree roots, and on top of rocky ground fully exposed. Although it's quite tough it doesn't like to be bent at sharp angles.

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast

    • @Michael-rg7mx
      @Michael-rg7mx 8 месяцев назад +4

      The cable itself isn't the great value. It is all of the user's downtime. They put a machine on each end to send signals, then plug on splices. The one we cut was up in a day. The locator didn't mark it.

    • @RolandElliottFirstG
      @RolandElliottFirstG 8 месяцев назад

      Some of those locators are rookies and others are just to lazy to be careful and mark out with accuracy, over half don't even know the correct colours that should be marked to identify the assets.@@Michael-rg7mx

    Hello Dave, another masterpiece. I always like seeing another guy my age run a sinker drill well. We now have new requirements for blasting near gas lines. Any blasting within 500 feet of any gas line requires a pre, and post blast survey by the gas company, plus independent monitoring from a gas company required third party vendor. Something smells fishy. Usually takes a month to get it all together.

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  2 месяца назад

      A good question to which I'm not really sure of the answer. I would think that the hydraulic splitter wins here because its force is only acting for the depth of hole that is equal to the length of the wedges (450mm) and If I were to use holes only that deep for the chemical I would not expect as much action.

    9:45 Wouldn't it be more productive if you laid a mat on top of the rock, then the dirt? Wouldn't that make the rock easier to remove after the explosion, (minimal dirt mixed with rock?) And at 21:55, imagine in a few thousand years they'll be scratching their heads wondering how that was done.

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  8 месяцев назад +4

      I have a heap of light weight blast mats, but I need to bring them to the job on a truck which costs money, the soil is already there and I can do much bigger shots than I would if I only used blast mats. The soil also gives a higher level of protection and cuts the noise down drastically where the mats do little for the noise. The blast noise brings complaints and spectators that I don't need. Another bonus of using soil is that I no longer spend my weekends repairing blast mats.
