This must have been a low voltage scenario. Run this amp at 14V to 15V and you should see a vast improvement. That meter wasn't doing you any favors either. You're missing 100 watts + from that amp.
Yes, I've learned a lot over the years since this was posted. I did everything wrong. Truck was turned off so it was probably only seeing 12.5 volts and that radio I was driving it with was only doing 15 watts PEP. So yeah...this little amp does a lot better than what my rookie test showed. 👍🏼
I have the kl RM 405, instructions say 10 watt am/FM ,20 ssb, that gives 170 watt am/FM and round the same on ssb, but peak power is much higher, good small amp minimum 30 amp power supply.
dietzhomeimprove So what would each line represent? There are not enough lines to equal 20. Even at 2 watts per line there are not enough. I read that the 100=1, 500=5, etc... Just kind of confused with the low setting. Thanks!!
I'm thinking about buying this amp. I've had radios all my life but never had a external amplifier. I just enjoyed them barefoot. But I want a little power now to help me talk to my base station freinds. I have a Galaxy 959 that should talk pretty good with this amp. It does 32w pep power and I can turn dead key down to 2 watts. I assume that will work ok
Don't over drive it. Otherwise all I did was add a muffin fan I had lying around and it makes a great little base station amp. I use a 19A power supply.
@@frankdiminnie 8 gauge is fine for this little amp. However, I have 4 gauge running from battery because I swap in a 6 pill and 4 pill every once in awhile.
Showman‘s got that turned out wrong at RM has too much of a dead key on low should always such a dead key on high wide open that’s Moskowitz should be at 75 like that key to a 50 W that key and let it do it’s thing from that point on Mancino’s amps and other Amplifiers for 20 years it is this a suggestion
HA HA HA A 10 WATT Cobra. If you would tune it properly, those radios can do close to 25 watts with stock final. That's a tune on an oscilloscope with an circuit intact. No 54mhz harmonics. Clean modulation around 110%. If you would swing 20+ pep into that amp it would do 300+
Just bought the High Drive version of this amp. Can't wait to use it on my more 'massaged' rigs.
How is it working out? Did you get it from 88Radio.com for $159?
@@JoeR203 Have you seen the price of this thing recently?

@@125southernnh2 I see between $195-$265. But that's the newer "HD" model. I got my KL-503 on eBay for $150.

Mine does about 250-275 with a 2-3 watt driver.
Had my 503p for 5 weeks now driving 2.5w dk and swings 20w. At level 3 getting 85w dk and pep 260. Very happy not getting hot at all. 👍

What input watts do you run with the 405?
My kl503 best linear power on 3 gear ssb 283Watt 8W driver
How's it sound check? Crisp and clean, or burned to a crisp sounding?
I have the same meter and was wondering which line do you read when on 20w setting?
The line on the very bottom with the "L" on the right of it.

I just got mine, but not hooked up yet. Damn cheap manual. They do not state max 6 watt peak or rms on AM input.

Its always RMS on dead key
So its just a 200 watt amp.
Is your kl503 hooked up 12v (straight to battery)? Thanks
Mario Lima Yes. Direct to battery which in my vehicle produces about 13.2 V
@@dietzhomeimprove what gage wires u putting to battery? 8g? I think is as big will fit into the back of amp.
Thanks

How is that little amp holding out?
Gota love those truckstop happy meters
Not any worse than those happy Bird Watt Meter pep swing kits used alot here on youtube.
My Palomar 250 did more than that.
He’s a swinging

Why?
Why does he need it.Is his swr high ?

Probably on a Bird Watt Meter with the extra addon pep swing kit that I believe are a joke just to fool people.
Start engine
I WAS WATCHING YOUR METER FROM POSITION 3 -5 NOT MUCH CHANGE AND LOOKS TO NOT EVEN HIT THE 200 MARK SLIGHTLY UNDER MORE LIKE 190 WATTS FULL POWER
