  • If you can't tell from the title of this video, Eric is pumped by the results of this two year project - his first successful attempt at making an exposed root Kishu Juniper!
It's more difficult, or at least it takes longer, to make an exposed root bonsai from Kishu Juniper than from Japanese Black Pine or Trident Maples. Eric began this tree as a whip in a 3" container. He planted it into an apparatus made of Anderson bands, attached to a large basket. After two years sitting on the ground, there are plenty of roots growing out of the bottom of the basket.
1:21 The Anderson bands were used as an apparatus for keeping the roots protected, but now, Eric cuts them off to see what's going on inside.
1:48 With the top half of the bands cut off, you can clearly see the old and weak roots, and the few which have taken off and run down the sides of the apparatus, and through the coarse pumice Eric used. He cleans up the small dead roots so he can see the transition between the trunk and the strong roots. (Eric references this video on propagating Junipers from cuttings: • Bonsaify | Juniper Cut... )
2:31 All the roots are cleared away, and you can see the two main roots. Eric will apply wire to shape a smoother transition from the original trunk to the roots, and remove the remaining Anderson bands.
4:04 The delightful results unveiled! Eric explains how and why he uses 2 pieces of large 3mm aluminum wire to control the roots, provide movement and twist.
5:27 Deciding what to do with the trunk; and wiring work.
7:18 Eric is happy with the movement he's created; he applies guy-wires to ensure stability for the tree.
8:30 Find our why Eric will add sphagnum moss at the base!

Interesting, I googled this because I’m repotting my my 20 year Japanese Jupiter soon, and I’d like to add and expose 1 more inch of roots from beneath the soil, should work fine!

Bonsai is a waiting game if you wait the roots will grow

Hi Eric, Very nice presentation on what looks like a challenging tree to grow as exposed root. While looking I kept seeing the abrupt transition from the base of the trunk to the beginning of the roots. I don’t think any branches will ever bud off the roots but small branches could be grafted on the roots to serve as sacrifice branches to thicken them. Probably with time that transition will take care of itself. Plants are pretty capable of becoming aesthetic on their own. I suppose bonsai incorporates a great deal of manipulation to imitate what happens naturally in aesthetic ideals.

It's a good point, and I agree. But, I think the nature of junipers - veining and deadwood, will allow me to clean that up after a few more years of growth. Will have to wait and see. I don't think grafting foliage onto the roots would be productive, although I do understand why you suggest it.

Cool idea and execution. I wonder with hindsight if wiring the tree before removing the plastic would have allowed you to work on the tree without moving the tree so much in the air

Good point, but as Anders said - bonsai is a waiting game. Since I waited two years, the roots are solid enough that I'm not too worried about it!

Would wrapping the exposed roots like that a pine to add movement work as well? I was just talking to some club members about doing this yesterday.

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  2 года назад

Yes, and the roots tend to be flexible up to a point. The real issue is getting roots that are large enough with a juniper since the root growth is not as quick nor robust as with pines.

Not much to report - the tree is just growing out at the moment, but no dieback or anything. I did do a bit more bending to the roots a couple months ago.

Some situations in life trauma and pain can lead to a far better situation than what caused it to begin with, like a man suddenly becoming interested in marriage where he would have never considered it previously.. But pain and trauma have a threshold a point of not return ,unfortunately people who lack emotional intelligence are not very good as assessing when they have crossed the bloody line, because they see your trauma and pain as merely a means to their end......FACT
