    In a tight-circuit race it was a brilliant tactic because the rest of the field will dismiss an early charge thinking to catch up, but if she is allowed to reach the end of the pack she gets the full drafting benefit from everyone, and the confusion factor caused by the last lap bell for her teammate to "play along" then push forward to claim silver when others think it's over? Absolute brilliance.

On the back straight Omelchuk and Szigeti suddenly start up again, to finish _another_ lap! With an equally confused Vegi in tow, looks like. Maybe it was because they saw Chung ahead of them, still going. But Chung actually _was_ still racing, having previously fallen at the line when mistakenly stretching to 'finish'.

      It looked like they all were following a similar strategy of preserving energy and position for the last few laps which is usually the most competitive. The constant switching of positions kept them busy and forget someone went past them in the first few laps.
      When the bell rang some of them including the cameraman thought this was the last lap for everyone. But it was the last lap for yang. Others had 2 laps to go. Once the lap was over, they were relaxing a bit instead of continuing to speed up. Before they realized and caught up to the speed, the second Chinese athlete took the lead. Thus they secured both first and second position

      It's a battle of energy and utilizing energy correctly. If 2-3 skaters followed the Chinese skater and they clipped a skate, fell, and knocked themselves out of the race, then it would be a totally different outcome. Heck, the Chinese girl who did the rabbit strategy could have fallen and knocked herself out, and this would have gone down as the dumbest strategy ever. So just like any trick play in sports, they all look dumb on paper until someone pulls it off, and then they are marked down in the records books as amazing athletes

    • @zaqc5615
      @zaqc5615 9 месяцев назад +13

      No, the premise of the Rabbit Tactics is that the first-place player is very confident in her own physical fitness and ability. Otherwise, consuming too much energy will only cause her to be slowly surpassed in subsequent games. But in the adult category, this kind of ability to surpass one lap is too difficult. Forcing this tactic will only make you the last place.
      Some people may ask, since you have the strength to do this tactic, you should also have the strength to take first place. So what is the significance of this tactic? The answer is to help teammates get second place. When others mistakenly thought it was the last lap, only her teammate clearly understood the situation, so the teammate had the "advantage" to get second place.

    The rabbit tactic worked well because after she expelled all that energy lapping everyone, she stayed in the back to catch the wind draft and literally coasted to victory. Bravo.

    while all the other skaters were tunnel-visioned at the front (save for her teammate), she's observing them from the back, and the audience probably isn't even focused at the front but observing her at the rear 😭
    it's crazy how tunneled their vision is, it became a bane to them, they forgot that she may have just lapped them or maybe they just hoped she accidentally slid away. and we as the audience know what's going on coz we see the whole thing.

    Commentator is supposed to be crystal clear/ expert in the sport to be able to highlight/ explain tactics to regular people. When the commentator highlighted the first lap, he should have also “expected” the chaos and confusion at the end. Sadly, the comments for the final lap/ second last lap was underwhelming only focusing on the gold medalist and not the rest of the pack.

    • @seaniwu
      @seaniwu 8 месяцев назад

      Pulling this kind of tactics on senior levels is almost impossible because of the endurance that it requires. That’s why athletes don’t normally train to counter this kind of tactics in competitions. They are more focused on their own bodies and probably had tunnel visions because of that.

      It's easy to say it when we are just watching. But there is so much happening to them. They probably can only see the straight track in front of them since it's very fast so that they don't realize they got overlapped
