Henry is at his absolute best here. You can just tell this was one of the greatest moments of his life. The ruts are the perfect band for him to play with. It’s like he was waiting his whole life for this show.
In case you weren't aware I organised the whole gig, I called every person and asked them if they would play. I organised the venue and managed the night itself single handed. I got some professional camera men to film it and then spent 6 months getting the DVD together and organising the launch of that. I personally deal with sending those out too. I did all of this for nothing, simply to help get some money for Paul before he died and for charity too.
I attended, it was brilliant to see al the musicians who joined in and all the people who came to see the gig! Fantastic night Sarah, didn't get a chance to say thanks before now!
Paul was such an accomplished rock guitarist, it is a travesty that he is not recognised as one of the greatest. bless his soul, he was obviously 100% alive at this show, even though he was facing a time limit, he was an inspiration.
When you listen to Henry talk about this gig, the absolute awe in which he holds these guys is obvious. I think he did an amazing job of helping Paul get the night he deserved. Rollins can be a little unhinged at times, but my god does he love music. Massive respect to all concerned.
My listening works like a filter. I let in evaluate and then throw off. I don’t just listen around. So I found them through Henry Rollins too. I like it because they’re a punk band and weren’t ashamed if the playing was with talent also.
Not seen this before, the last 60 seconds was the nearest I've come to having a tear in my eye for 30 years. It's why we're different, why we're special, and why punk rock will never die.
I saw the Ruts just once in 1979 with Malcolm Owen. Quite a lot of younger Ruts fans I know are jealous of me for this reason. Seen Ruts DC/Foxy's Ruts quite a few times, but they never recovered from that loss. I remember when Owen died, and I was at a Damned gig at Birmingham Top Rank. They dedicated the set to him. Recently, the Ruts DC blew everyone off the stage at North East Calling, with their coverage of The Crack album in full. Plus ending with In A Rut. Rollins does a good job here though. Well done that man.
Foxy was the sh•te. Powerful punk chords like his life depended on it and he also used reggae effects like reverb and delay on his punk chords, the first. How noble of Henry Rollins to stand in for Malcolm Owen, and a worthy one, because he's the Ruts number one fan. A landmark moment in rock music.
I don't know as I have ever heard of this punk band before. Thanks to a Henry Rollins talking show I have discovered a band that is truly magnificent. It is a shame what happened to them.... what is the old quote... the brightest star burns the fastest?
Saw The Ruts back in the day. '79 I think. Eric's, Liverpool, Saturday afternoon under 18's matinee show. What can I say? They were so much better than I expected. My first gig. The best and loudest gig I ever attended. The support band couldn't play due to some kind of tech problem and maybe I benefited and The Ruts tried to make up the difference with their set. Got home with my hair set with spit. A real punk you might say. I always thought that The Ruts could have taken up the mantle of The Clash and they were certainly an antidote to the right wing neo Nazis that were ruining punk at the time.
Thing is even though you got into the ruts due to rollins you probably heard the other members work elsewhere the bass player had a second wind to his career when he joined Alabama 3 (sopranos theme), and the drummer is a well known producer who has produced many post punk, rock and pop acts.
Brilliant Henry, I unfortunately didn't manage to get there on the night, but I was lucky enough to get to know Paul Fox, through a good mate who was a good friend of his. Got to go and see him loads of times in various other bands and yeah, he was a fuckin fantastic guitarist by the way. Great to see this again, it's the bollocks.
I seem to end up watching this about once a week. The Ruts were well on form, Foxy's killer guitar, Rollins' intensity and integrity brought their sound bang up to date. R.I.P. Paul and Malcom.
This fills me with so much happiness. The ruts are one of my favourite bands, this was a great night in honour of Foxy, celebrating Malcolm and the rest of the boys, Henry got to live his dream. Wish I could have been there.
Come here from Henry talking about this gig. I was moved to tears by how much this meant to him, he was the same star struck kid he was at 20 around these guys and that's really endearing. Plus the beautiful outpouring of love and respect for Paul is so heartening to watch, few people get self actualising moments that potent
Too many compliments to list ....BRAVO HENRY ROLLINS ...YOU ARE A BRILLIANT PERFORMER... THINKER...AND SPEAKER. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN.😄
Whenever I need a little motivation I skip to the last 4-5 minutes, crank it to eleven, and just wait for that chorus to come in. The Ruts, Rollins, crowd participation...it is fucking amazing.
Henry Rollins is a brilliant choice as stand-in, he's really into the music and has huge stage presence. The whole band is great, but as a lot of people have said, Paul Fox - what a superb guitarist!
GodDAYUM. I've seen Henry front a lot of different shows in a lot of different states of being, but this has to be the most effervescent I've ever seen. He must have been transported to 100 times of his life all at once, while remembering where he was at that very moment and what it meant. Sometimes you can't quite see joy and power in the same place at the same time, but there is an infinite amount here. It turned out that I had definitely loved some Ruts music, but I had played it from a cassette with no label, so I never knew what the name of the band was. Henry went on about the "four gray-haired men", but I would have to say, they were operating outside of the pull of time on this one. Bands who have had ten times as many albums and ten times ten live performances couldn't look as geared in as these players. I'm never going to forget this now.
Rollins did a wonderful talk about his love of The Ruts, and how this whole project came together. The fact that as a young teen Rollins found "In a Rut" in a singles bin to singng the song with them on stage must have been so real.
I really love the passion Rollins put in his performance. After all, he sang for one of the key American punk bands but, still, he's very humble when he relates himself to bands like the Ruts, UK Subs, or the Damned (if you have not done it yet, check out his spoken word show about this night, it's on RUclips). The Ruts were a truly fantastic band. RiP Paul Fox, this was an amazing night for you and for us,
Absolutely fantastic!!! I know Henry felt a bit humbled by be the frontman for a band he so extremely appreciates. But Henry you nailed it hard and created so much energy to the audience. Everyone is happy and proud of your performance. Thanks for your work and thank you to whoever posted this masterpiece.
I'd never even heard of this band till a couple days ago. I listened to a couple tunes, and woke up today with Something That I Said playing in my head. That's good songwriting!
I was there incredible how foxy put on that performance being so critically ill. Some things live with you for ever this is one of them for me.Rip Malc and foxy.
I remember how exciting those Ruts records were when i was a kid late 70's and 1980. Massive respect to Henry for taking this on. It must have been daunting fronting your favorite band under these circumstances. And what a band! Absolutely amazing players. RIP Foxy!
And Thank you HENRY for turning us all on to The RUTS. A GREAT BAND EVEN WITHOUT YOU.... BUT EVEN BETTER WITH YOU.!✌So sweet YOU did that for PAUL FOX and the band. BRAVO HENRY ROLLINS
Nice sentiments, but some of us were Ruts fans when Henry was still in High School :-) . This was an incredible gig - so glad I was there and also grateful to Henry for enabling it to happen
Was getting a bit fed up travelling to gigs ,missing the last train home or having to leave early , thinking of giving it up , but i went to this , lots of great bands & realised what i'd be missing , a great night.
Paul Fox rocked it, you can see he's in pain, but he's playing for the joy of it. I'd never heard of The Ruts before Henry Rollins, but I'm really glad that I checked it out. Thanks Henry, RIP Paul Fox. This was something really special.
this is fantastic ... I loved Malcolm Owen and the Ruts and this brings it all back to life ... Ruffy and Segs are still out there plugging away and long may they go on
I will never forget that back then in the year 1980 at a club in Germany, when the song 'Babylon' s Burning was played at full volume, the German punks roared "Stalingrad is burning"
how degenerated can someone be to dislike this video?! this is awesome and sad at the same point. RIP Paul Fox !!!! such a piece of art with the legend uncle henry. thx fpr the upload

Paul Fox played this gig while dying from cancer. He didn't miss a note, and he was smiling every second. That's how powerful music is. Music killed his pain. For him and for everyone else who has ever played, thats the truth of being muso.
Most bands would be honoured that Henry Rollins stood in for their departed lead singer....But H is absolutely in awe of Foxy and the guys here!....Thanks for downloading this, rest in peace Foxy and Malcolm Owen....Much Respect from an Old Goth. PS-Is hard to believe how big the Ruts were and how quickly they were forgotten, by the Mainstream Rock Media....An absurd state of affairs....The Ruts Rule!
Henry tore it up! The ruts were my fav band since i was 15. I saw them 3 times and met them all at one show. Paul was my inspiration and still is. I even play a les paul too! A few months before paul passed, i actually was chatting with him via email. It's not often you get to chat like friends with your heroes. Thanks again for the music it means the world to me.
Almost unbearably sad to watch but at the same time incredibly powerful. From the start the Ruts were a band on the edge with more emotional power than any other punk bands, for me anyway. In a Rut possibly saved my life then and it still is the song that tells me to stop feeling sorry for myself and get on with it. I can only hope that I can be brave as Paul F when it is my turn.
I love Ruts! I love Rollins! Ruts n' Rollins! Love it! Added a sub to you for your 8 videos already uploaded. Theee best SdSx forever. Cheers! Hope you live long G.T. Cheers!
wish i had known about this. What a line up and even with Henry Rollins, the Ruts were on fire. Good to see Molara from Zion Train get a look in too as Ruts DC did a lot of work with Zion Train as well as their better known dub stuff with Mad Professor. Proper punk rock :)
HENRY FUCKIN ROLLINS!!! What a welcome addition to any stage. What a noble cause to dedicate his fierce energy to. Fox left this world with wings after this. Rollins couldn't have given him a better send off. (Fun fact: Rollins was in Syria within a couple of days of this show. Why? Because fuck it - that's why)
I never knew Henry was a manic Ruts fan. Fair play. I know music is his world but you know what i mean where you hold a special passion for a band. Respect.
Three things I never thought I'd while Henry was on stage doing music:1) Henry in a Shirt, 2) Henry not in Shorts, and 3) Henry doing music wearing shoes. Lol
Henry gets to do for real what I did in my bedroom when I was 14 . Luckiest man alive. As for that mesmerising guitar tone on SUS - nothing like it anywhere else.

LOL so you have so much respect for the person that put this gig together and put so much time and effort for no money to help Paul Fox , well for your information mate it was SARAH PINK
On 16 July 2007, the band reformed for the first time in 27 years, and played a benefit gig for Fox, following his diagnosis as having lung cancer. Henry Rollins stood in for Owen. They were supported by Tom Robinson, The Damned, Misty in Roots, UK Subs, Splodge (Splodgenessabounds), John Otway; and the Peafish House Band which featured Lee Harris, (The Blockheads), Tony Barber (Buzzcocks) and Rowland Rivron, plus Edward Tudor-Pole and T. V. Smith.[citation needed] Fox died on 21 October of the same year, at the age of 56.
I saw them several times back in the day, they were bloody great, RIP Malcolm and Paul, Henry did a stand up job, thanks to every one who made this happen.
Thank's for uploading this great vid :) its Terrible what happened to Paul Fox and its great he managed to be on such great form for this performance, you can tell by looking at him how bad he is but he still put on a smile and battled through what have been complete agony to give the fans one great final performance. RIP Paul Fox
Truly amazing. I have never heard " in a rut " played so well or with such raw ferocity it did make the hair on my neck stand on edge, the mark of a great tune and performance.
Brings back memories of listening to the Ruts when I was a teeny in the 70s/80s. Staring At The Rudeboys was one of my favourites. Paul Fox bears an uncanny resemblance to Jigsaw in the Saw movies in this show, but then he was terminally ill with cancer as well. Thanks for uploading. Very much appreciated.
that was a maze zing! if rollins had told this story in his"provoked" album i my never have heard of these guys, so thank you to him, but who are 6 soulless pricks that hit the dislike button?

it was a brilliant night,Sarah. I flew in from Barcelona for the gig. It was magnificent

Thanks to Henry Rollins for introducing me to 'The Ruts'.
Really?

I'm impressed that you didn't know them through Babylon's Burning, that track got a lot of play.

Fair play to Henry hats off !☘️☘️
fuck the band are tight and fair play to rollins for being so humble

One thing you can count on with Henry --- gives it 100 percent. Thanks for being my spirit animal through some rough patches.
Paul Fox and Malcolm Owen Requiescat pacem. Much meaning and passion in their songs. Thanks for the upload. G.B.
Pure class.
I'm still very happy, this is my favourite band and they are doing justice to their classic songs x
So 'everyone involved in putting this gig together' is basically me.....
Oh wow, you’re Promoter Lady! You must be stoked, what a show. Thank for putting in.
Thank's for uploading this great vid :) its Terrible what happened to Paul Fox and its great he managed to be on such great form for this performance, you can tell by looking at him how bad he is but he still put on a smile and battled through what have been complete agony to give the fans one great final performance. RIP Paul Fox
Hat's off to Henry.
I had not heard these songs in a long time - brings back fond memories!
What an awesome night that was, I had the pleasure of being there....
Hard watch in some ways.
Sad to think this was Foxy's last ever gig.
What a fucking great guitarist he was RIP.
Love The Ruts and Ruts DC.
Man what a killer combo here.
that was a maze zing! if rollins had told this story in his"provoked" album i my never have heard of these guys, so thank you to him, but who are 6 soulless pricks that hit the dislike button?
The punk band i love the most in the 80's.....i admire the guitarist with this incredible sound and the way he plays guitars is unique!!!!...
This is absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for uploading!
i was born and grew up in the 70s and i cant believe i never herd of The Ruts i feel so ashamed of myself :(
Paul Fox plays brilliantly here, whether in spite of, or because of. Respect. RIP.
Same here: the sound quality is all over the place. 'The Damned' were awesome this night.
What a send-off for a legend. Foxy played like a beast.
Fair play to Henry Rollins he gets it !
