Herbie Hancock 'DOLPHIN DANCE' in one take

- Herbie Hancock’s “Dolphin Dance” is one of the modern classic jazz standards, even though it was released way back in 1966 on his album ‘Maiden Voyage’.
The twists and turns of the melody and chords are such a beautiful challenge - this has always been one of my favorite tunes.
This song also commonly causes problems - because the harmony in the final 4 measures of the form is so ambiguous. What DOES Herbie actually play there?
As a bonus, if you watch all the way through you’ll see what the chords are in that spot. (I actually didn’t name them on purpose, because you could name them in many ways.. but it’s the chord voicings that are important).
As always, I record the vibraphone track FIRST, using a click - then I overdub the piano part after.
One take - no editing, no correcting.
The mallets I used are Joe Locke "Deep Tone" Mallets by Mike Balter: amzn.to/2C02yIr

So good!!
Thanks for energizing my afternoon. Your playing is so relaxed and fluid. Wondering why you used 2 mallets rather than 4 for this tune.
I wanted to use those Joe Locke mallets and I only have two of them ;)
Hi, Tim. Could you share the piano accompaniment sheet ? I would love to learn those voicings
I don’t have one.. I was playing it from memory...
@@TimCollinsVibes if you could so write a chord sheet or the voicings used, i would certainly be grateful!
@@mattamorim8944 There's nothing fancy about the chord voicings I play on piano - it's pretty much stock 9th chord stuff, sometimes with the melody note on top..
@Matt Henry It's otherwise very good to transcribe it yourself, Matt - just a tip! It's quite easy when you also are able to see everything ;)
