Wow! What an incredible mistake you are making! The word is motif! Not motive! Motif!!! It is a musical motif! Motive is a word that first refers to a reason for acting. Such as my motive for playing jazz is self-fulfillment. It is not the word motive! It is motif! You should be able to get this fucking right by now!

Both the terms motive and motif can be used in music.
Wikipedia defines motive in music: "The motive is the smallest structural unit possessing thematic identity". If you type motive in the Google search you get this: "Motive, in music, a leading phrase or figure that is reproduced and varied through the course of a composition or movement." Motif is often associated with art, so to me, motive is a bit clearer for use in music. Thanks for chiming in, guys!

Thanks for the comment, Eric. Of course I knew that before I made this video, ...why do not more people know this? I prefer to use motive, because motif is used w/ art, so to me it's clearer. Please post a comment below the first comment (pinned) that called me out for what they thought was a major mistake. Appreciated!

I've been playing this tune for a while but never quite understood its structure until you walked us through it. Thanks so much for your incredibly coherent and interesting song analysis. I'd love it if you could also walk us through an improvised chorus or two, explaining your approach as you go along. I struggle quite a bit with soloing, and so a Part 2 (soloing) would help a lot. In any event, I love your tutorials, the best I've found on RUclips.

    Hey Kent,
Love your pedalling at 5:00.. you always pick the right moments. Don’t know how to put this.. I’m just some engineering student trying to my way in this crazy plain of existence. Every time I feel overwhelmed or defeated I put on one of your videos. You’re honestly one of my favourite motivators, mentors and personalities. Your videos always put me back on my path of faith and self- assurance.
I also introduced your videos to my friends a few years back, they love you too (and when it comes to music talk; Jazz, you’re ALWAYS brought up in conversation). I’m just one person.. but I don’t think you truly realise the impact you’ve had on so many!
Hope this didn’t feed into your (alter)ego!
Keep killing it on the jazz ranch!
    Much love, Kent!!

Much appreciation for your super way of teaching. Personally, I like your 18-20 minute lessons. Just discussing 3 motives and 4 key changes is plenty. And yes, "Life is a Wonderful Journey" . Hey Kent,
    Really dug this.
I've always liked this tune - kinda sounds like a movie or TV show theme to me . . . not sure Herbie would take that as a compliment . . . hope so, tho!
You're improv was great. The frequent motive development over the changes was really appreciated - always a hallmark of a great improvise to me.
Takes some TIME to develop and hone that ability.
Lastly . . . think l heard some Chick influence in there. How could that not be the case?
Maybe a circuitous line from Bill Evans, thru Chick and Herbie, right to you . . .

Either is good, I prefer to use the word motive in music because motif is so often identified with art.
