Whitney Houston exists in the same breath as Barbra Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross etc. These are icons and trailblazers. From 1985 to about 2000, the stage was Whitney's and she owned it. No one else came close. She doesn't get enough credit, in my opinion, for her vocal clarity across her range and her breath control. That took years of training from Cissy. Whitney's soulfulness also didn't get enough praise. She had so much soul on stage.

Donna had amazing breath control that's for sure but for sheer power and tone and vibrato and lets not even go to her head voice, Donna pales compared to Whitney. Whitney is the very best! Even Mariah was intimidated when they sang the duet in 1996, and acknowledged "The Voice" saying she didn't feel in the same league as some of the greats. Whitney's voice was so versatile. Anything she sang she put her signature stamp on it to long be remembered the way she sang it.

To clarify something here...Whitney is what *Americans* think of when they think about singing. Europeans have a different thought process when it comes to singing and song.
Rhythm and blues was NOT born in Europe; it's strictly afro-American. Belting (not singing) is also Afro-American!
Whitney had the uncanny capacity to accommodate high notes into her chest register and able to belt them with ease. Most singers struggle with that and suffer vocal strain as a result. Whitney was very much a soulful singer; though scantly matched and sustained the angelic vocal registers coming out of classical European singers. That's where the two cultures differ in vocal style and technique, if not clash altogether.

It was called "Whitney Houston - The voice of our generation" or something like that and it was a 14 minute long video that broadcast the specific things she could achieve in the voice.

Yes very true, due to record company demands her first two recorded albums were very lacklustre, still brilliant but not powerful except the Bodyguard soundtrack.Her live performances were where she really cut loose.

Over the years as I fell in love with more and more of her songs it would remind me of this video whenever she reached those “blockbuster high” notes.
