With substantial selling forces in play, expecting more instability prior to a possible downfall is a tangible concern. Ultimately, it saved me money, and I earned the same degree that my classmates earned, spending all 4 years at the university.

To sit for the exams and earn those licenses, you must first earn a college degree. Look at being a personal trainer or real estate agent. All you need to do is take a test and pass it. Sure, you can make good money in those professions, so more power to those folks. But some fields require college, and some employers will not even consider you without college. In 2009, it broke my heart to refuse to cosign a school loan for my daughter. Someone in her high school had convinced her that she needed to go to the 2nd most expensive school in the state to get a questionable degree. I told her that there were other, cheaper ways to get the training she wanted, but I just couldn't justify that risk, especially right after the economy crashed, and I was facing a layoff. I later discovered that a small percentage of the students at that school actually graduate, so my daughter likely would not have been able to pay back the loan, and it would have bankrupted me.

The entire college loan system needs to be revamped. The college should be the one issuing the loan to the student with a capped interest rate (no 24% rate on student loans). Then the potential degree has a mortgage attached to it like a home. If the student fails to pay on the loan, the college forecloses on the degree and any job the student is at requiring is forced to terminate that student.
This one measure would fix so much clearly wrong with colleges. They will start enrolling students based on merit and not just fill all of their desks with easy paychecks. It will force the college to dump a ton of the useless degrees out there such as art history. It will force the colleges to actually invest in making sure the students can get a job in their field after graduation. And the taxpayer won’t be on the hook for trillions in student loan debt.

Difference between young people now and young people of Gen X / Boomers, etc. (I am Gen X)
After I discharged from the military, prior to college, I got married. We were looking for a home but needed a place to stay in the meantime. We stayed at my in-laws. They knew it was temporary, they knew we were responsible, etc. and as such did not ask for board. But I insisted we pay something because it was the right thing to do. Furthermore, I did dishes, I mowed the grass, anything I could do without being asked in order to express my gratitude because again I thought to do otherwise would be wrong!!
Not all but too many kids nowadays would not even consider such a thing. They would believe that their parents owed them because they rarely hear the word no and they've been given everything and asked to do little to nothing in return. Entitled brats is what I call them!

We supported our oldest through college because he was strongly into an engineering field. Graduated high school with very high grades in advanced STEM courses and an internship building actual space vehicles with an aerospace startup. Then after two semesters he switched his major from engineering to history. I was peeved and literally said, "so you're going to be a barrista?" After graduation, turns out he wasn't qualified to be a barrista. That position takes skills and training he doesn't have. There was actually a pretty tough knowledge exam to get hired for that position. Which he failed. A promising future went sideways but at least we paid 100% through a 529 Plan and don't owe anything. If we had a big debt for this result I'd be so much more miserable.

I'm 40 next year, I can tell you NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR EDUCATION!
NOBODY GIVES A DAMN ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL.
What matters at work is EXPERIENCE!
I found out that a few years after graduating.
When you're looking for a first job, school might help you a bit, but when you have 5-10 years of experience nobody cares about your school.
They look at you, look at your experience, how you behave, what you represent by yourself.
At work there's no place for school, there's place only for experience and performance. ; )
All the hype for college sucks! People say that if you won't go to college then you're some lesser kind of a human - but only the young and naive ones say that!
I went to college, I got pretty papers, but I can stick it right to my ass right now - I don't need it at all!
When I apply for jobs they ask me about my experience, what I did, how I did it. NOBODY CARES ABOUT MY EDUCATION!
These pretty papers are just a SYMBOL of LOST YEARS and MONEY for me right now.

Years ago when my single mother and I went to the local tech school to check out their program, I would have needed a "student loan" for the school. At the time I would have needed a loan for $7500. I wasn't working, and my mom made too much money to qualify for a "student loan". My parents couldn’t afford university for me,but I graduated from Teachers’ College nonetheless. debt-free. I just can’t imagine this American system, leaving people saddled, for decades in some cases, with huge debts.
I suppose many Americans would scream “ Socialism” at our system, not realizing America has socialism, too,in many ways: your police and fire departments, for example. Everyone’s taxes go together to pay for them for the common good. Medicare, Medicaid, road maintenance ( Even those who don’t drive pay for that.) schools ( Even the childless pay for them.). What do you think insurance is? Everyone pays for it, but only those who need to make claims get any monetary benefit from it. Think about all the socialism America has for the common good, before you attack that word without understanding it.🇺🇸

The worst part about the Parent Plus loans is the narrow restrictions placed on them vs other student loans. For instance, if you are having issues and want to change your payment plan to an Income Based plan, you have about 4-6 choices with normal loans. Parent Plus loans get 1.
When the government goes around trying to buy votes...I mean, forgive loans, Parent Plus is not included. That doesn't even get into the original problem described in the video of a person taking out a loan on someone else's behalf and potentially destroying their relationship/their own life/their own retirement on the basis of that student's performance and choices.

Maybe you can't save 100%, but between savings, work by the student, scholarships, etc.- that dream can come true and not be a nightmare. Another thought- kid takes a year or two to work and save while living at home with few expenses. It's not a race. Whether you get a bachelor degree at 22 or 24 (or 26) makes no difference in the long run.

Also, most people can handle a part time job through the year and 4 months in summer. I managed a full degree outside of USA by working the whole time as well as school.
