Dodge Durango SRT 392 Review / The Fast & Loud Family Hauler

  • There’s nothing quite like the sound of a big V8 engine. Better enjoy it while you still can as the auto industry shifts to electrification. But for the time being, you can still get a big, 3-row SUV with the thumping heart of a lion. So how does the Durango SRT 392 fare as a family hauler?
    What an engine this SUV has. It is a 6.4L naturally aspirated Hemi V8 that produces 475 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque (354 kW & 637 Nm). Although the Durango SRT tips the scales at 2,439 kg (5,378 lbs), the engine allows this heavy SUV to blast out of corners like a bullet. There’s power everywhere in the rpm range which is accompanied by the rumble of the V8 engine. This Durango even has launch control. When’s the last time you saw that in a 3-row SUV? Dodge claims a quick 4.7 second sprint to 60 mph from a stop. With this much power, it is very easy to go from legal to illegal speeds in a blink of an eye. Better yet, with this engine under the hood, the Durango SRT 392 can tow up to 8,700 lbs.
    Like many other Dodge products, the Durango SRT is paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. In Street mode, the transmission shifts are smooth and nearly imperceivable. Switch to Track mode and the shifts become much more ferocious but also faster. The steering wheel mounted shift buttons are quick to react in this mode.
    The 2022 Dodge Durango SRT 392 starts at $85,840 CAD ($71,890 USD) including destination. This particular demo vehicle had a few goodies added on and the price was $98,140 CAD ($84,390 USD). But to help things out a bit, Dodge is providing about $10,000 CAD in discounts at the time of filming this review. Pricing for the 2023 Dodge Durango SRT 392 has not been announced at the time of filming either.

    We had a Durango RT for several years and it was a great vehicle it just didn’t have the giddy up it needed to match its aggressive looks. We traded recently to a new SRT and boy that’s how they should be all built! Now performance matches it’s bold looks. Sad to see these going away.

    Solid review! I have a 22 SRT with family using third row every day. It works for my purposes. It's easy to switch drive modes to avoid 4cyl mode. Solid Dad SUV if you want a little excitement. Dodge quality is a step down from Euro makers, but price reflects that.

    I own a 2018 Durango SRT. This model was NHRA certified to do 0-60in 4.4 seconds and 12.9 in the quarter mile. I personally have GPS validated 0-60 times of 4.2 in stock form. Not sure why this data changed, perhaps it was “tweaked” to make the SRT Hellcat look more impressive?

    What happened with the brake lights at 2:05 ? Looks like they glitched out and made only 1 brake light come on and by the looks of it, the front lights acted up as well and then worked normally.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  11 месяцев назад +1

      wow, good catch on the brake lights! Normally, they may look like they're "glitching" because of the frame rate and rolling shutter of the camera. This is my 3rd or 4th night time video so I was a bit more conscious of this and tried to eliminate it. But the brake light thing you mention wouldn't be a cause of this so I'm not sure what happened there...

    • @sterlingd97
      @sterlingd97 11 месяцев назад

      @@MGReviewsBlog ya I thought at first maybe it was slowed down and the turn signal was just on but i watched a few times and it was at a normal speed and then both the passenger and third brake light activated at the same time. If you look closely to the front you can see the front lights by the ground it looks like they acted up a little bit to when it was doing that. Hopefully it’s not anything serious and just a 1 time thing but at least now you know and have it on video in case anything happens

    At this point, i won't be swayed yet by EVs. I will consider hybrids bit not yet EVs. Not until it is proven that it is cleaner (as battery disposal isnt cleaner in it self); infrastructure for charging is better; safety of battery. I do have the RT Durango and i know when everyone of you has an EV, id enjoy my semi classic v8😊

    Very nice SUV. Forcing literally everyone to go full EV will be a disaster on so many levels. At least with PHEV there is realistic range and capability without mining the earth to destruction and overloading power grids worldwide.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  Год назад +2

      Completely agree with you. PHEVs are the best of both worlds in my opinion. Sadly, politicians that write these laws which will ban gasoline engines are too short sighted. It's one thing to force manufacturers to produce only EVs, but if the infrastructure to support them or have enough materials to build the batteries isn't there, then what are going to drive in? Fred Flinstone's car?

      Unfortunately I don't have any equipment or a safe area to perform my own 0-100 km/h tests so i can only go off the times that Dodge provide in their press releases. There are different factors that can affect 0-100 km/h times. Ambient temperature, tire temperature, prepped or dirty tarmac, 0-60 mph vs 0-100 km/h, etc.

    EVs plugged into a fossil fuel generated electrical grid, isnt saving the environment whatsoever.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  Год назад +1

      It depends on where you live in the world. Here in Vancouver, the majority of electricity generated is from hydro. But you are 100% correct. Other parts of the world still rely on coal or natural gas. Plus producing an electric car isn't as environmentally friendly as producing a gasoline-only vehicle.
