For those of you who don't know, I will give you a brief history on the PT Cruiser. The PT Cruiser was designed by Bryan Nesbitt for Chrysler. At the time all car manufacturers were trying to come up with an interesting and fun design for the hatchback cars of the time. They were all essentially boring econo-boxes until the PT Cruiser made it's debut in 2001. Nesbitt came up with the ingenious concept of the retro design that worked well into the reasons for the econo-box cars. The market at that time needed an alternative to the sedans that offered very little utility. The hatchback econo-box cars provided a large hatchback door instead of the trunk. They had high roof lines that offered good headroom as well as more cargo area. Cars of the 30s and 40s in many cases those features as well as beautifully curved exteriors. The car was a huge success! Dealers could not get them in fast enough. Many buyers paid thousands over sticker to get one and were not disappointed. Fan clubs sprang up around the world. Consumer Reports Magazine named the PT Cruiser as their only recommended buy in it's class for several years running. The cars were very reliable, very comfortable and fun to drive. As a matter of fact, the PT Cruiser was such a success it gave birth to the Chevrolet HHR. That's right!!! Chevrolet hired Bryan Nesbitt to make a Chevrolet version of the PT Cruiser. All of you haters can say what you want, but if the PT Cruiser was the failure you all like to say then why would Chevrolet want to play the "Me Too" card? For those of you who say they are junk and unreliable, I challenge you to back that statement up. Pull up the cars in the PT Cruisers class from it's production years and see which one has the most cars left on the road today. As for mine, I now have 125k. It rides smoother and quieter than my daughter's much newer Honda CRV and has a much better service record. I will never sell this car!
I got mine new in 2008 and it has 168,000 regular wear and tear, but people also whom call them junk are usually the ones who don't bother to do regular maintenance on their cars either.
@@transamslut1985 People think the PT Cruiser are ugly, but there is nothing weird about the design. It's beautiful designed. But the Chevrolet HHR is ugly in my opinion.
I wanted a PT from the first time I saw one. Bought a new one on 2002 and still have it in July 2023 with 89,000 miles on it. Has always been garaged in Florida and the paint is still in great shape. I love the car for all the reasons you mentioned in this video. All the parts and options still work except the hatch automatic lock. I'm glad you are making the service videos. I've recently watched you replacing the front struts. The videos are very helpful. Keep up the good work and thanks.
That’s awesome that you still have the car and still feel the same about it all these years later. Thanks for leaving your feedback here, I really appreciate it.
I think they hate because they paid twice the price and got half the car a PT is. Hands down a PT can't be beat, for room, comfort, or reliability. The GT/HO can't be beat on the street,,and if it was who wants to brag about it?
True story when I was a kid I had a purple PT Cruiser hot wheels, I thought it was genuinely a cool car and I really did see the hot rod resemblance so I never grew up with a hatred for PT cruisers haha very unique video sir thanks for making it
Exhaust Sports Auto Thanks for watching! I actually love the purple PT’s (full size lol) but never seem to find a deal on one, my gold one has a rare tan/brown interior though so that has really won me over & goes perfect with the gold.
Thats awesome man love to see you finding what you like, its a nice affordable practical car great first car for a lot of people it doesn't really need to be hated that much honestly
@@CarswithNash - Both of mine are gold in color, one is a Woody. I really like the blue colors they used, but the gold has grown on me. I think the PT Cruise is a great vehicle. It's very versatile. With the back seat out, it has a lot of cargo space. I get around 21 miles per gallon around town with the air conditioning on. As far as horsepower, 150 hp out of a 2.4 L is pretty good. My Ford Ranger with a 2.5 L only has around 120. Keep the videos coming!
kirbo7106 I’ve always liked the purple the best but the gold has also grown on me, it’s a “warm” color & also really lights up nice on a sunny day. Yes I find the 150hp “ adequate” and they handle well, I find it fun to drive quickly, of course more power would make it even better. (I’m actually thinking about getting a GT this summer).
I ENDORSE WITH MY 2001 PT CRUISER, 288,000 MILES THAT WILL BE 19 YEARS OLD THIS NOVEMBER. IT'S RED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, AND STEEL CHROMED WHEELS. IT'S SHOW ROOM AND DRIVES EXACTLY AS THE DAY I BOUGHT IT NEW. ONLY CHRYSLER WOULD DO AWAY WITH THIS EXCELLENT VEHICLE. I'M NOT KIDDING!
Robert E. Tewksbury The vehicle came about during Daimler’s partnership with Chrysler and ended after they had parted ways, I think that factored. Personally I’m a big fan of the Daimler era of Chrysler vehicles (‘97-‘07), I’ve had nothing but good luck with them and find them easy to work on and enjoyable to drive. I love hearing stories like yours, thank you for your comment!
Thanks for your reply and sharing your enthusiasm for the PT Cruiser. I ordered my PT in July of 2000 and delivery was made in November 2000. I have all the original paper work listing Base Price and all information of everything that's included along with Total Price. This vehicle is the PT Cruiser Limited. Cool information is shown on the backside of this paper. Like: "This vehicle was built especially for BOB TEWKSBURY" shown is a rectangular lined box, opposite that in Large Print "Daimler Chrysler Motors Corporation" Further it lists PARTS CONTENT INFORMATION, MAJOR SOURCES OF FOREIGN PARTS CONTENT:NEXUCI:29% " FOR THIS VEHICLE FINAL ASSEMBLY POINT: TOLUCA, MEXICO. The Price information shows the Base Price $ 15,935 and Total Price 21,585. This paperwork is maintained in perfect condition and stored within a plastic sheet protector and kept in a hard cover three hole binder. That's how important this car was. It was the only new car I ever bought that I didn't need. This car has the sun roof, seats-Leather Trim w/Preferred Suede, Shift Knob-Leather wrapped, Opt Red Tinted Pearl Coat $200.00 included in Customer Preferred Package 280. Total $4,685.00. I noticed that the later PT's afterwards left some exterior appearances that may have been less appealing as the prices went down. I never understood how Chrysler would have left such an important portion of the market so void of a product that all the competition now seemed to be covering. My paperwork lists anything and everything built into this vehicle down to the windshield wipers.
I have one and it’s literally the best car I have ever had it’s never broken down in the years we’ve had it it’s a cute little cherry red one and I love it
@@CarswithNash I have a 2004 w 122k. The cd self-destructed. I replaced it w a No-CD from Amazon only 35 dollars, later added a subwoofer for 80 more, I replaced the shocks, struts, ball joints at 50k, the brakes have been done twice, 2 of the 4 motor mounts, plugs twice, and as a PM I replaced the water pump and drive belt at 105k.
I bought a brand new PT Cruiser in 2002 is 2019 and I still have it today. Was thinking of selling it due to paint job fading out, AC not working, overheating and other minor issues, but the more I consider other cars for me to buy the more I realize, I really love my Cruiser and with channels like yours I’m learning how to fix things myself now. It makes me feel good to know that I can work on my own car. Please do a video on overheating. On the PT’s. Thank you.
1mmafrka It’s great to hear from owners like you, really fuels me to make more videos. I had been thinking about doing an overheating video, the issue is I’ve yet to experience any overheating issues with a PT personally, I could make a video going over the likely causes and how to diagnose... I will see what I can do, thanks for the suggestion.
I just got my first PT-C, a cream-colored 2006 with a red racing stripe. It’s really cute and in immaculate condition, with 107K miles and a standard stick shift. I’m so glad I found your channel, Matt, thank you so much for your expertise and your willingness to share it with us!
I just bought my first PT about a week ago and man I sure do love it! Especially because of the same percs you described! It has this funny thing of stalling while idling IF the AC is turned off. I love it! :D And I watched your videos on this car before deciding to buy, you have my gratitude! Thank you for your awsome videos and for standing up for the PT! It really is a swell car!
Kaizer Mordecai Thanks for the feedback and congrats on the new PT! Typically they stall out when the A/C is on due to the fan burning out on high speed... but you say it happens when the A/C is off... Sounds like an idle control issue of some sort. There’s a few things that control that, the idle air control motor which is on the back side of the upper intake is one, but the PCM signals for a higher idle speed to compensate for the engine power the A/C uses, that might be why it’s idling better with it on. Does it have a check engine light or anything? That is probably something you have to have diagnosed in person to effectively pinpoint the issue.
Cars & Coffee Kings I have to admit I was renting a car once & they asked if I wanted a Fusion or a Beetle... it was a very easy choice! I actually really enjoyed that Fusion!😂 But if you enjoy your car then that is all that matters.
Hey Matt, I just subscribed. I appreciate your helpful PT Cruiser videos and your enthusiasm for them. Having owned one for nearly two years, I can say that it repeatedly exceeds my expectations in reliability and dutiful service!
I just got a 2005 GT Convertible that is in mint condition, I'm so impressed by it..the most solid convertible I've owned, no rattles and shakes. Great engine and I really like the pre-2006 interior design. The later models were de-contented. Great seating position is awesome!
David Harris I’ve never been in one of the convertible ones but I notice they are well loved by those that do own one. The climate where I live is not the best for convertibles.
I love the old fashion look yet modernized. I also like the way it looks like an old Rolls-Royce unless it's black then yes I can understand it looking kind of like a hertz
REALLY was a "long nite at work"....... hahahaha 😳 Lucille is actually a 2005 silver Convertible & I ♥ Her !!!!!!!! All these years later & am blessed to have had so few issues. The Clutch gave way last year but was easily repaired by my mechanics. Have her booked in 2morrow for a GATES timing belt change, water pump & assoc. bits too just to avoid the worst. Living here in the Tropics of Far North Queensland finds a slick little roofless lass such as Lucille to be a FANTASTIC Gal to drive. The 3 days she was off the road getting the new clutch found me driving a solid roofed rental & DAMN i hated it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
I used to repair a lot of window switches. The only reason they go bad is from dirty contacts. A quick clean with 800 grit glued to a pencil eraser and some dielectric grease and they are good to go for another 150k
Camaro Rick Thanks for the tip! I have done things like that with other switches but have yet to encounter any sort of electrical issue on a PT aside from the multi function switch failing on the blue one, it was pretty easy to swap out.
We drove from Southeast Michigan to the Puget Sound region of Washington State in late December 2003. Our wee little front-wheel-drive 2003 PT with its all-weather tires made it all the way there through the snow, (with chains as needed! we were on I90 & went through 4th of July Pass 45 minutes before Idaho Transportation closed it) with no trouble. 10+ happy years with that PT before I let it go. Solid little beasts... they are.
My parents are still driving theirs, they have actually tried out a few other cars and they always end up selling them and going back to the PT’s! I actually used a 2005 turbo convertible for 2 years to plow snow on my acreage, with a 6 foot blade on it it would push through 2 feet of heavy snow believe it or not (videos on the channel if you look back). We also did a tug-of-war challenge with it between an all wheel drive SUV and guess which one won?!
Steve Lentz Exactly, let the haters hate, we’ve got three on the road daily currently within our family, really trouble free, my parents just completed a 9,000mile roadtrip in their ‘03 Dream Cruiser without a single issue.
I've had my 05 PT Cruiser for 3yrs now & I Love it‼️ It stands out in any crowd. I Love the design. If I would buy another car, it would be a PT Cruiser‼️😊 Thank you for giving it it's Props‼️👍👊
I am a PT Cruiser lover as is my wife. Ours, our second, is a 2008 model with 132 miles on it. I am starting to have electrical issues and so appreciated your video on the grounds clean up as well as the other things on the electrical system. PLEASE make more PT Cruiser videos!
Don’t worry I have plenty of PT Cruiser videos coming still, I just haven’t had to do as many repairs to them recently but we still have several in the family.
@@CarswithNash As an idea, what does each electrical connector connect up and what service can be done to that item that the connector serves? I have the service manuals but the graphics are terrible. Are the MAF and IAT combined? That sort of thing.
Thanks for the video Matt. I don't understand all the haters either. I own a 2006 that i bought new. My wife and I simply love this car! It drives great. It rides and handles very well. I have the 5 speed and have managed to get 35 MPG on the highway. Seeing how much I liked mine, my neighbor bought one. he sold it after it had over 100k. None of his teenage daughters wanted to drive it! Lol But, his car like mine gave him excellent service.
Mike Fruge I know they are very popular in my town and I’ve bumped into a few owners that also really love them. I think most the hate comes from people that have no actual experience with them.
I got my PT cruiser after my Dad sadly passed away ,i can say it is a lovely car, and i been a taxi and limousine for 22 years, and i driven all top german cars and also had a subaru legacy 3.0 sedan we call our PT for Lille Diva me and my GF thanks for a good video
People used to tell me that my Volvo 240 was ugly, but I liked the soft purplish-blue color and thought it looked stately and dignified. I think everyone should just get and drive what they like.
Robert Troxell You are exactly right, if you like it that is all that matters! There is a lot of love for the Volvo 240’s, I have a close friend with an ‘81 that has crazy high miles and remains reliable as his daily driver.
A friend of ours own several PT Cruisers one he used as a taxi cab well here recently he passed away and his wife asked if I would like to buy one I said yes and now we own his actual taxi cab it's a 2007 and I've been watching your channel here just recently and you came up with a whole bunch of stuff that I had no clue about and I want to thank you
Hi Matt. I just picked up a '10 PT for my family for $3500 USD with about 83k miles on it. I also just subscribed to your channel, because it looks like you have a wealth of information on maintaining these fun little vehicles. Thank you for all the time you have put into it, and howdy from way down South in Texas!
Thanks for subscribing and congratulations on the new car! I’ve been a little sidetracked lately but I do you still I have more PT videos planned so stay tuned.
I picked up a 2009 and i agree with how well built the interior is , i have not a single noise inside mine , probably one of the quietest cars ive owned .
We have an 03 base with the 5spd and we love it. Been in the family almost 20yrs. The cloth seats we found are more comfortable than the leather. Have a 165k and it still runs great on non ethanol premium fuel. The quality was good with these cars and the creative options and diverse hauling capabilities are great.
I do tend to agree with you about the cloth seats being more comfortable, although I have noticed that the limited models with leather use a firmer seat then the GT models with leather and I find the GT seats not too bad, they are a bit softer, more like the cloth ones. Thanks for your feedback!
I bought a 2007 with 144k, for 2,000 almost three years ago. Its been a great car and enjoy driving her. It is very well built. I know your video was posted a while back, but really enjoy it. They are great car!
Turbo chargers are plain waste of $ in my opinion. If you live in Germany and go on the Autobahn than a turbo charger is a nice bonus but down the road all turbo charged cars are prone to fail sooner than later. Fun to drive yes, smart to buy? Not for me. Good video as always man.
We have a couple turbos in the family now, we really drive our PTs aggressive so we enjoy them, they are actually a sturdy engine if you can find one that hasn’t been badly abused (hard to do…) The turbos themselves don’t last much more than 100,000 miles, so certainly there is an added cost to ownership. I managed to get a really good turbo convertible for only $1200, 2 years later I haven’t had to touch it yet.
@@CarswithNash you got it on a point where you say “not abused” most people have no understanding about how a turbo charger works. I love driving turbo charger vehicles but would never buy one used. You will never know until you have to replace it and it’s expensive.
Just recently discovered Matt's Garage and am really enjoying the videos. I bought a 2005 PT Dream Cruiser convertible new. Always enjoyed the car and always had people stop me to compliment it. At about 100k and 10 years after faithfully maintaining it, it started to get front end problems. Had everything replaced but the Chrysler dealer by me was never able to make it drive like new again so I traded it in. I which I knew someone like you back then Matt because I definitely loved it and still miss it. :(
I think these are great cars. Mine's a turbo that was fairly well kept, and its honestly faster than what I'd ever need for non-track driving. It was my all season vehicle both where I live now and in SK for almost 15 years, and the only money I've put into it had to do with regular maintenance and regularly wearing parts. Very comfortable, good handling for its shape, and a very practical/versatile vehicle. The unique design for me will never lose its luster, and really when I say that I drove it for 15 years, I mean this was my car, truck, van, and sports car without issue. I drive my Jeep in the winter now, so ideally I should be able to keep it even better. Also, you sound hella Canadian dude. Not surprised that you're from Alberta :)
Bought our 2006 Limited turbo new. Still going strong. Good around town and great on the highway. Comfortable trip car. I've owned over 85 cars, and the Cruiser is one of the best.
I don't give a rats ass what bad things people say about the PT. I own one that I bought new(02) and customized it and won trophies with it and just plain LOVE them
i have a 2006 pt cruiser and idk what the previous owners did, but it's always breaking :( maybe it's because i let it sit for too long (no car insurance/used to be afraid to drive/wasps in every little crevice) but i bought it from a family friend for $200 when i was 17 or 18, so i guess you can't beat that. we've put two or three batteries in it, and now another is burnt out, but the price for repairs isn't really that much compared to if i wouldve just bought it with no problems from a stranger. i love it even though it's broken
Sounds like you’re having a power drain issue and that’s why your batteries are going bad. A cheap workaround to that for such a cheap car is to buy one of those solar panel battery tenders off of Amazon, if your car has the optional cigarette lighter in the upper dash that one stays live even when the key is off so you can just plug the panel into that and leave it sitting on the dash when you’re not using the car and it will keep the battery topped up. Otherwise you can clip it right to the battery under the hood also. They are under $30 and work great.
Just bought a 2005 PT Turbor Convertable. Few minor's easy to repair, except the rocket panels need total replacement, so hoping this won't cost much. 244K on it and well maintained. All working well and only took me a few miles to say sold for $800. So I will sub, as I need to know more about these cars. I felt safe and the drive was very smooth, unlike many of these plastic cars today.
Curious George Glad to hear! Sorry I missed your comment earlier, thanks for the sub. Yes the rocker panels are a common area for rust and all Chrysler’s of this era.
On the GT Cruiser's keeping the bypass oil line changed out every 50K miles will keep the turbo from locking up. The oil line get clogged(coking) up and doesn't flow and will seize the turbo. My daily driver Blue GT is running high 13's and my Black GT cruiser is running high 12's at a mile high(Denver). They are simple to tune and work on and make a nice sleeper. Preventive maintenance on any car will make it better.
I don't get the hate. I've been having my PT cruiser 06 Touring never had any problemz. Only replaced battery, oil change ..n doesn't burn 🔥 much mileage. I love my PT...I only am considering a repaint codeing .. And a shampoo. Thanks for the video.
Don't be apologetic PT Cruisers are fabulous, I have one and my previous car was also a PT. When I drive it I have a big smile on my face, comfortable, reliable and fun if others don't get it more fool them.
I bought my pt new in 2005. It has served me well . It now has 177428 miles on it. It has been the most useful car I have owned. Yes it has had some problems but nothing I could not handle. The little engine and transmission have performed well. I bought it when I fell in love with the looks and retro concept. It is over 15 years old and runs like a top. So who cares who doesn’t like I do and it makes me happy. Ptbud.
The problem is that it was built by Chrysler. They had tons of quality control issues, and the PT was also affected by this. My father had a 2002 Stratus----before the car had 70K on it, the front tie rods wore out, as well as the rear upper strut mounts. One of the tie rods actually broke as he was pulling into the driveway
I have a 2005 5 speed base model. 52 k miles! I paid $4,500 2 years ago. I had to replace the timing belt kit / cooling system for a grand and then the oil pan. Jiffy lube over torked. I love my car! I live in Carson City Nevada and these cars are everywhere here..
Redrum.x a girl and her cars I hear you on that but then a drift car is not nearly as agile or suited for dropping my kid off at school in a snow storm... PT’s are great for small family’s & they can still be fun to zip around corners in. I have my 240SX I definitely want to drift once I get all the rust repaired. I also have a Lincoln Town Car with an engine swap & a LSD that I may horse around with a bit once done. I will be doing an autocross event with my PT on the 22nd, depending how that goes I may do more aggressive driving vids with it as well, we’ll just see what I can come up with. I’d honestly love to do more fun driving sorta videos & plan to in the future, it’s just currently most my cars are in project phase lol, I have 10 cars but only 3 are plated & insured currently. Thanks for watching & for your kind words!(-:
Good input for the PT Cruiser. There’s tons of them down here in Florida. Thanks for the sub. I subed to you also and rang the bell. Hopefully I’ll make some more videos of my Miata...Btw, that Neon sure makes a good plow...
classic287 Thank you for sub’ing, glad you like my content. Thanks for watching! P.S. if you haven’t already, check out “Novice Garage”, they have a budget boosted Miata & a lot of other cool content, just a bunch of young guys, but they’re good dudes.
....hey matt......like your work!.......I have had 3 ctruisers with mixed mechanical success.....but my 2005 convertible turbo took me 120,000 miles in 3 years on business.....it is comfortable, reliable, and economical.......perky little hot rod too!!
I noticed the hate, too - and my regular mechanic was one of those who thought it was a terrible car. I loved the styling - still do - and drove an '06 Touring 5-speed manual for 5 years. It was the most versatile vehicle I've ever had, though I always thought the gas mileage should be better than it was. That said, if you're not doing the work yourself (I don't), they're not always economical to repair. When the timing belt was due for replacement (do the water pump at the same time), it was going to be thousands of dollars. At that point, I traded it for something else. I should add that, before the PT Cruiser, I drove a '95 Neon (Plymouth!) for 15 years and nearly 250,000 miles - it will likely be the most reliable vehicle of my lifetime, even better than the PT Cruiser. For their time, both were excellent cars.
Ray Schoch Yeah finding the right mechanic is key. That should be under $1k to do the timing belt & pump, it’s really not that hard. I’ve owned a ‘00 Neon since 2011 and it has been the best car I’ve ever owned.
Matt's Garage pteazer isn’t too bad of a kit I was in between of the pteazer and xenon hahaha but I got the xenon 10020 - style 1 body kit I’d like to put some off road tires with black challenger like rims if not I’ll put the challenger rims my car used to be white now it’s all black I sought opportunity when I got in a wreck on Dec, 20 2018 I’d really love to see your work on these pt’s!!! 😁
I have an 2008 pt candy blue like the one on your right, had a cooling fan problem and it turned out to be the fan connector ( the pig tail connector) turns out it can't handle the current demands, just bypassed the connector 3 pin one ground one for low speed one for high, was a simple fix works great0 as far as cooling, had another problem, just sitting there no key in the ignition, the rear hatch lock would kick on by it's self from time to time, and noticed it would happen later in the day as it warmed up, turns out it was the rubber membrane in the rear hatch door, I guess with time the rubber shrinks and puts pressure on the rear hatch switch, took apart sooked the rubber in oil for a few to get it plyable again put it back in and bingo, fixed, If sombody has that problem do that plus you can always undo the two wire connector to stop it but you will have to use your key The connector is in the rear door, you have to remove the lock stud inside next to the locking mechanism on the inside, then just pull the plastic down starting at the bottom of the hatch, once you remove it you can see the key, switch hardware and the two pin connector, there are 3 I beleave 8 mm nuts that hold that in, then you can remove it and fix or replace the rubber membrane, or just undo the two wire connector going to the switch, hope this of some use and feal free to share, had be goi g fore awhile.👍
Eugene Erickson Thanks for all the info, I’m always happy to have little tips like that. That’s odd that your cooling fan plug did that, they actually updated that plug & small harness for the ‘06 redesign.
Nice review. I took the rear seats out of my 2001 Limited , showed it to my insurance man and he insured it as a Van which is way cheaper than a car here in Texas. "cool". On the matter of easy to work on you're right EXCEPT for the timing belt/waterpump job at every 75000 miles - undo everything, raise engine, lower engine, raise again etc ., and because of narrowed design ya gotta force even a skinny hand and wrist in there to do the job. Done it myself three times and due for another now at 230,000 miles. Car is dead junk if that belt goes out. Let 'em keep up the hate. It keeps prices low (like average $1200 down here).
I just bought a 2007 PTCrusier that has 107,000 miles. It looks great inside and out and was taken care of . The engine looks almost new and it runs great. I don't get the hate but, I see people looking at it when I drive by.
I love mine ...but I have an over heating problem keep putting money in 2005 with 155, 00.00 miles ...going to change water pump hope that fixes the problem already changed the fan motor and thermostat 🤣
I own a 2006 that I bought new. It has been a great car! If your are having over heating problems, check to make sure you do not have air trapped in the cooling system. There is a small bleed valve located just below thermostat. Search RUclips on how to bleed the cooling system.
Check the condition of your radiator, but first drain your cooling system and refill your coolant using the bleeder valve. Make sure that you use the proper long life coolant
Ain't no hate. The used market is being bombarded with PTs now as they did produce over 1.5million. I found a pristine 2 tone loaded 2010 Couture Edition with only 72000 miles for $6000 US. Anything over 12000 miles go for $3000 or less and may be kid of tired. Much better then the Chevy HHR Panel I looked for same price. Not built as well as PT but neat.
Leigh Rich Mine has 150k miles & is still going strong, no oil consumption or issues, it’s been 100% reliable & I only paid $650 for it (the gold one in this video). They are a popular car on my area being they perform well in the snow & cold. Yes I agree on the HHR, if I understand right they are based on the Cobalt which was far from reputable, the PT was designed from the ground up & it shows.
I have an '07 limited edition and I have had no problems if I had a problem it was my fault lol it will drive better in the snow than a pick up truck and it also does great drifting in the snow it's a solid little car and I have beat the crap out of it and it's still going I love this little car its so much fun and when I said I beat the crap out of it I really went hard on it and it's still running like a top.
HiTmAn ThE TrAsH pAnDa Yes we really enjoy them in the snow too. Last year I purposely put worn all seasons on the back of mine and grippy snow tires on the front so the back would be loose... what great fun that was!(-:
@@CarswithNash the cruiser was a good car I'm not arguing that, I was just never very big on the styling of them. But that's just me, everyone has their own taste in vehicles
Nothing wrong with them. Some cars just get an undeserved bad rap, usually just non-owners who know nothing about them. It leads to good prices on the used market. Same thing happened with used Chevy Volts. I have two of those, and am yet to have any problems.
Idk why people rag on these little cars so much. I've never had an issue with any of mine that I couldnt fix. Never had to take them to the dealer, and parts are plentiful and cheap. I've got an 02 with over 227 thousand U.S. miles and an 06 base with only 75 thousand on it. Also just picked up an 05 convertible from copart auction with the 180hp turbo, I'm gonna build it up and try to make a sleeper drag car out of it.
Lots of room real people, Can easy carry 2 X 4, does not look boring quick motor, I recall when the muscle Cobra has 88 hp, great headlights, prices now going up.
I've been driving my Moms 2006, the only thing I don't like is the MPG, I'm driving 70 miles round trip to work and can't get over 21 mpg..other then that its a good car.
I do hear stories of bad mpg but personally have not experienced it, the gold car in this video average 30+ mpg on the highway driving aggressively (75mph+). I later sold this car and replaced it with a 2005 convertible touring turbo, that one I drove beyond aggressively, literally wide open throttle from every stop and on my day to day mixed driving it was averaging about 18 MPG, better on a highway drive, that’s about the worst I’ve done in one but literally drove it like a race car. Sold that one to my mom and she is still enjoying it, the turbo cars are actually pretty darn tough! One thing that might help your mileage is a set of NGK V-power plugs, most people put champion coppers in these because that is the stock recommendation but trust me the NGK‘s are so much better and I have seen a slight improvement in mpg running the NGK. My mom also has a 2006, it’s a 5 speed none turbo.
Most people hate them because they are a Chrysler product which might be cheap for you to work on... but require more work than most cars ever need in a lifetime. Now combine that with their look and the average person that drives them...
Hottspitta jR That’s actually not true at all, I’ve owned a lot of cars and to date the best and most trouble free has been my 2000 Chrysler Neon I feature on this channel. PT’s are not far behind, that is why we have 4 in the family, I like cars I don’t have to constantly be working on. They look like a proper hot rod, I guess not everyone appreciates retro styling, but I do. Not sure what you mean by your last comment, I see a wide mix of people driving PT’s, they are often favoured by older people or people with mobility issues since they are very easy to get in and out of.
I hated these cars but them I had to buy a cheap car. bought a GT turbo and really had to admit a love the handling, room and pickup. Never driven one without the turbo so I can't comment on it. I like it so well I'm looking for another GT turbocharged PT. the only thing I don't like is there no room in the engine compartment for my big hands to fit. lol
Glenn Smith I still find the none turbo versions fun to drive, they aren’t gonna impress anyone at the drag strip, but they get the job done and actually sound really good. I have a GT Turbo project car now, but it’s a ways down my list of things to work on right now, planning on power upgrades when I get to it.
I have a pt cruiser I bought from the original owner she pre order hers and she was one the first ones to own one in Cali back then people where surprise when they saw that car for the first time they ask her what type of car it was and where did she get it
Gustavo Uribe Very cool! Yes I remember them coming out, I remember that ad where one came off a hot wheel’s track and the guy goes “this is my hot rod!” I loved them even back then, always thought they were cool.
We have one I wouldn’t say I hate it But it uses oil I think its the oil going up the pcv line Going to raise the line hoping that will help Not many here in Australia and not many know how to work on them Had the time belt done by a “PT Expert” it wasn’t cheap
Michael Harrison If it’s a turbo model it’s normal to blow some oil out the PCV hose, a catch can is a nice mod to prevent your air box from always getting oily. If it’s the none turbo 2.4 then they typically do use some oil, even from new most did, it typically won’t increase with time and isn’t actually any sort of issue, just keep it topped off and it’ll be fine. I will have a lot more PT repair videos coming up that you may find helpful to keeping yours tip top, so stay tuned.
Matt's Garage thanks heaps It’s an early one 2001 2.0 litre manual with 260,000 kms It’s always used oil since we’ve had it (4 plus years) Looking forward to more videos Cheers
Michael Harrison Oh yeah, we never got that engine option here in the PT, but they are closely related to the 2.4, should be the same difference, if the consumption is consistent I would not worry about it.
I think most people definitely hate just based on looks and that it's fun to ride the band wagon. As far as I can tell they are plenty reliable and decent transportation. Definitely not my favorite in terms of styling or power in the non turbo model, but I would drive one if I just needed a car. Decent amount of cargo room too. Didn't know they had good crash test ratings. Also what did you use for audio recording in this? Sounds pretty good.
P.S. Wow! Very impressive this was all one take. Also, do you watch Rust Belt Garage? He has one of the GT models I believe. Tell him I sent you if not! Good friend of mine.
802 Garage Yes it is in one take, I actually did a lot of my videos that way early on before I got skilled at editing, if I mess up I start from the top & it normally goes better as I go anyways, this one I got first try actually. I think the PT had a dual 5 star front rating & 2 or 3 star side, that was very good for the time & I’ve seen a lot of real life crashes in online groups, honestly I don’t recall any injuries & the pictures tell the story, the cabin area does well aways, the unique shape on the front is not just for looks either, the hood line follows the upper impact beam, thus they commonly deflect the impact if it is off center. The styling I can’t argue on as that is a personal choice, I’m blessed with a broad taste in cars that allows me to appreciate it. It is definitely underpowered, I enjoy fast cars & have owned a few but power alone doesn’t make a car for me & I have other cars for that purpose. Thanks for watching, your channel is awesome, really enjoying your content!
802 Garage Oh & as yet all my videos are done with Iphone’s, this one was done with my 7 plus, no mic’s, just the Iphone mic & my dad is legally deaf so I’ve learned to speak up lol! The Iphone actually does great on this kind of video but I have noticed it lacks a little for high action like when we do an off road video it isn’t as good as I want so I hope to get some Gopro’s for that sorta stuff as the channel grows. I’m pretty low tech currently as I somewhat detest computers!
Thanks for all the explanation. Makes sense on the "tank armor" deflecting design of the PT, hahaha. I think you'll like RBG too. Lots of cheap DIY work, though his vids can be a bit long. Great dude. May be coming to hang out with me this summer. Nice sound quality for a phone! My Pixel 2 XL does pretty well, but I get a bit more noise from that range. I've done my share of public speaking, too.
I like the PT Cruiser because I am a baby boomer and it reminds me of the fifties, when car styles were very different from today. I occasionnally travel to Cuba and what I like about Havana is seeing so many of those old cars on the road. Today's cars seem to be copies of the Lexus crossover, they really all look the same and that is why the PT stands out. Also, I think some of the hate about the PT from the US stems from the fact that the PT was build in Mexico. There is also the fact, maybe that people associate the PT with the 07-08 recession. Maybe, in the end, the PT was the victim of its own success. Too many sold, they flooded the market. The opposite effect of the cabbage-patch kid.
I sure agree with you, rows of SUV's everywhere that all look so similar I have to read the badges to figure out who made them. A lot of cars have been and are still made in Mexico and other countries and they are made from components that come from all over the world... All cars are somewhat global cars at this point, at least within the mainstream. I actually worked in a Ford parts department for awhile and all the individual packages had the country of origin, it was almost never USA or Canada, lots from Brazil, Mexico, China etc. Personally I don't see the big issue with that, it is simply a matter that certain countries specialize more in manufacturing of these sorta components, they can do it cheaper and better, which keeps the costs of the cars reasonable even in an age when cars have so many gadgets in them. When you compare the number of parts in a Model A to the number of parts in a 2020 base model Ford you can start to see the root of the problem.
The big reason ppl hate the PT Cruiser is because they are so much harder to work on then other cars with the 2.4L. On my 2.4L you dont have to pull a plastic intake off to change the plugs. You dont have to remove axle and jack up motor to change the alternator. On mine the alternator is in the front not buried under the car. That is just two examples of how the whole car is put together. That is why they are so cheap used. Because we all know all the money is in labor not parts. The expense of repairing these cars makes ppl sell them for 600 bucks. One head gasket blown is far more costly then blue book value of the car. Thats why ppl are giving them away. One transmission replacement would cost the same as 3 used pt cruisers. It is a disposable car. Like a bic lighter. No offense meant to you, if you love the car then by all means keep them alive.
People hate it when it breaks down when they neglect the car....and I do mean that how it's written there oh my dad's pt has around 265k if I remember that right
Renato Lavilles Most American cars have very low resale value, it means you can find some affordable cars is all. That is part of why they become “unreliable”, because they are such a cheap car people don’t want to invest a lot in maintenance, they are most often neglected, as are a lot of cheap used cars.
LOl. I could get a lot more done if my sister's cat would stay off my keyboard. Any way on my 2008 PT Cruiser, I have replaced the oxegynating sensor { I know that's spelled wrong.} three times. And just yesterday, steam was coming from the right side of the engine, yet the car was not overheating. I'm wondering if the brakes got hot. Like I said the body of my car is great. It's 11 years old and just now starting to show rust. It's the engine that I have issues with. Please give me some insight on this car's engine issues before I push it off a cliff somewhere!
Elizabeth Wilson If your brakes were smoking like that you’d smell it and also the wheel would be very hot. The right side of the engine has a drain channel from top to bottom (behind the timing cover, you can’t see it) on the right side of the engine (I assume you mean the car’s right side, as in passenger?) This makes it a little tougher to pinpoint a leak as everything drains out at the same point. The best thing for that is to have a mechanic pressure test your cooling system, basically a little pump they put on your rad cap and pressure up the system and look around for leaks. How long since the timing belt & water pump were changed? The water pumps will commonly start to leak around the shaft seal when they get worn out, there’s a good chance that’s your issue. Sounds like the kitty is lonely, give him a scratch behind the ear lol!
@@CarswithNash Thanks for the advice on the car. Her cat comes to my house to get away from her screaming grandkids. He comes here to get some peace. Again, thank you.
Mike Fruge Well said Mike, thanks!
I got mine new in 2008 and it has 168,000 regular wear and tear, but people also whom call them junk are usually the ones who don't bother to do regular maintenance on their cars either.
Heather Underwood Yes that’s exactly it, maintenance is key.
@@transamslut1985 People think the PT Cruiser are ugly, but there is nothing weird about the design. It's beautiful designed. But the Chevrolet HHR is ugly in my opinion.
@@CarswithNash -Absolutely Heather....if you dont take care of it, it will become ' junk'...
I love the pt cruiser! I dont undersrand the hate too
agree with you
I think they hate because they paid twice the price and got half the car a PT is.
I think I had the same Hot Wheels!
Couldn’t agree more i just bought one for my wife, a touring model with only 80kmiles for 1200$
LoCalRICe Nice score!
I love these PT Cruisers...
Thanks for stopping by.(-:
I have one and it’s literally the best car I have ever had it’s never broken down in the years we’ve had it it’s a cute little cherry red one and I love it
Jay Mullins Glad to hear, we’ve got 4 in the family & they are all good to us, it’s all about proper care & maintenance.
@@CarswithNash I have a 2004 w 122k. The cd self-destructed. I replaced it w a No-CD from Amazon only 35 dollars, later added a subwoofer for 80 more, I replaced the shocks, struts, ball joints at 50k, the brakes have been done twice, 2 of the 4 motor mounts, plugs twice, and as a PM I replaced the water pump and drive belt at 105k.
most of the hate come from ppl with no cars lol
@Camaro SS Whys that
For real
Enjoy your new PT! Thanks for the feedback.
I just bought my first PT about a week ago and man I sure do love it! Especially because of the same percs you described! It has this funny thing of stalling while idling IF the AC is turned off. I love it! :D
And I watched your videos on this car before deciding to buy, you have my gratitude!
@@CarswithNash can you not do the key dance to figure it out?
As a man who drives a beetle, I can tell you that most men can't handle the looks of any car that isn't a box or yacht.
Cars & Coffee Kings true lol
Cars & Coffee Kings I have to admit I was renting a car once & they asked if I wanted a Fusion or a Beetle... it was a very easy choice! I actually really enjoyed that Fusion!😂 But if you enjoy your car then that is all that matters.
Hey Matt, I just subscribed. I appreciate your helpful PT Cruiser videos and your enthusiasm for them. Having owned one for nearly two years, I can say that it repeatedly exceeds my expectations in reliability and dutiful service!
Derryl Ballard Awesome! I appreciate the feedback & your subscription. Plenty more PT content on the way.(-:
Bella Italia Hmm... My current PT is a black on black ‘03 GT...😂
I have just bought myself a 2.0L Auto PT Cruiser! (I live in the UK). My youngest daughter has decided to call it Ruby as it is a Red one!
That’s awesome, congratulations!👍
I love it and it doesnt deserve the hate
I've owned my 1992 PT convertible for around 4 years now & it aint missed a beat. Love It!!
Dazza G I’m assuming it actually a 2002, that’s awesome, great to hear.
Opp's ... lol Dont mind me, Long nite at work, it's a 2006 ..
REALLY was a "long nite at work"....... hahahaha 😳
Lucille is actually a 2005 silver Convertible & I ♥ Her !!!!!!!!
My window dnt wrk , was like that wen I got the car. How wud I take the panel apart to fix myself ? , I dnt have the money to take to sumone
We own two and we love them...I get flack all the time..but got them cheap, paid cash for them, no car payments and they are reliable as ever.
Steve Lentz Exactly, let the haters hate, we’ve got three on the road daily currently within our family, really trouble free, my parents just completed a 9,000mile roadtrip in their ‘03 Dream Cruiser without a single issue.
We bought a PT cruiser 2003 and my wife and i both are in LOVE with our car!!

@@CarswithNash Thank You!!!

PT Cruisers FTW! Good video my friend!

I got my PT cruiser after my Dad sadly passed away ,i can say it is a lovely car, and i been a taxi and limousine for 22 years, and i driven all top german cars and also had a subaru legacy 3.0 sedan

A friend of ours own several PT Cruisers one he used as a taxi cab well here recently he passed away and his wife asked if I would like to buy one I said yes and now we own his actual taxi cab it's a 2007 and I've been watching your channel here just recently and you came up with a whole bunch of stuff that I had no clue about and I want to thank you
Sorry to hear about your friend. Glad to hear you are enjoying your PT and my channel. Thanks, I really appreciate getting feedback like this.

That is a shame, it sounds like they just didn’t get it aligned properly for you again. Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoy the videos.
TrueNomadSkies Thanks man! I’ve got an ‘03 GT now that will be a bit of a project on the channel, stay tuned!(-:
Bought our 2006 Limited turbo new. Still going strong. Good around town and great on the highway. Comfortable trip car. I've owned over 85 cars, and the Cruiser is one of the best.
John and Mary Lou Wilde That’s great to hear, thanks for commenting. Yeah I’ve had around 75 cars myself and the PT certainly ranks up there.
I don't give a rats ass what bad things people say about the PT. I own one that I bought new(02) and customized it and won trophies with it and just plain LOVE them
So great to hear, thanks for your feedback!(-:
I bought a 2007 PT. Cruiser convertible, has 80800 miles and is in mint condition, I love it!
Great to hear, congrats!
im glad theyre hated because theyre cheaper for me! lol i'm planning on getting one soon. Perfect little hauler
thank you for not bashing love pt cruisers allways wanted one
Michael Sisk They are good cars in my experience, I certainly enjoy owning them.
i have a 2006 pt cruiser and idk what the previous owners did, but it's always breaking :( maybe it's because i let it sit for too long (no car insurance/used to be afraid to drive/wasps in every little crevice) but i bought it from a family friend for $200 when i was 17 or 18, so i guess you can't beat that. we've put two or three batteries in it, and now another is burnt out, but the price for repairs isn't really that much compared to if i wouldve just bought it with no problems from a stranger. i love it even though it's broken
I have a black 2004 PT cruiser Platinum edition turbo and I LOVE IT
Great to hear!(-:
Just bought a 2005 PT Turbor Convertable. Few minor's easy to repair, except the rocket panels need total replacement, so hoping this won't cost much. 244K on it and well maintained. All working well and only took me a few miles to say sold for $800. So I will sub, as I need to know more about these cars. I felt safe and the drive was very smooth, unlike many of these plastic cars today.
Curious George Glad to hear! Sorry I missed your comment earlier, thanks for the sub. Yes the rocker panels are a common area for rust and all Chrysler’s of this era.
@@CarswithNash I got them done for a good deal :(
On the GT Cruiser's keeping the bypass oil line changed out every 50K miles will keep the turbo from locking up.
Great advice, I’ve heard of this issue before.
I own three . . . one is a custom-built Panel! Love the PT! My first one that I still drive every day has 178k and still runs strong.
Great to hear, thanks for the feedback.
I don't get the hate. I've been having my PT cruiser 06 Touring never had any problemz. Only replaced battery, oil change ..n doesn't burn 🔥 much mileage. I love my PT...I only am considering a repaint codeing .. And a shampoo. Thanks for the video.
T. T. So great to hear from other PT owners that are loving their cars! Thanks for watching!
I just bought an 08 PT Cruiser, size and price was perfect for me.
Deborah Plower Great to hear, enjoy!(-:
cool insights on the pt cruiser. Thanks for sharing.
Blue Tube Thanks for watching!(-:
Great to hear! They are popular car in my area too because they are so good in the snowy weather.
PERSONALLY it’s low power and fwd.. I prefer to drift lol and more power ♥️ Love your channel & learning more though! 😍😍
You must not be driving it right because I've drove mine and burnt rubber with it really beating on it and it still will burn tires...🤣🤣😎😎 no hate!
The 5 sp cruisers are just plain fun to drive, every car has problems after some miles, but these cars can be loaded with options!!!
Michael Ashcraft Agreed!(-:
....hey matt......like your work!.......I have had 3 ctruisers with mixed mechanical success.....but my 2005 convertible turbo took me 120,000 miles in 3 years on business.....it is comfortable, reliable, and economical.......perky little hot rod too!!
I have a 01 pt cruiser with custom front and rear bumpers side skirts etc I love the car even more
Danny Andersen Great to hear, is that the Pteazer bumpers? I’m doing one up for my mom with custom paint and a Pteazer smoothie front bumper kit.
Nice, yes I remember looking at the Xenon kit myself.
I have an 2008 pt candy blue like the one on your right, had a cooling fan problem and it turned out to be the fan connector ( the pig tail connector) turns out it can't handle the current demands, just bypassed the connector 3 pin one ground one for low speed one for high, was a simple fix works great0 as far as cooling, had another problem, just sitting there no key in the ignition, the rear hatch lock would kick on by it's self from time to time, and noticed it would happen later in the day as it warmed up, turns out it was the rubber membrane in the rear hatch door, I guess with time the rubber shrinks and puts pressure on the rear hatch switch, took apart sooked the rubber in oil for a few to get it plyable again put it back in and bingo, fixed, If sombody has that problem do that plus you can always undo the two wire connector to stop it but you will have to use your key
The connector is in the rear door, you have to remove the lock stud inside next to the locking mechanism on the inside, then just pull the plastic down starting at the bottom of the hatch, once you remove it you can see the key, switch hardware and the two pin connector, there are 3 I beleave 8 mm nuts that hold that in, then you can remove it and fix or replace the rubber membrane, or just undo the two wire connector going to the switch, hope this of some use and feal free to share, had be goi g fore awhile.👍
Eugene Erickson Thanks for all the info, I’m always happy to have little tips like that. That’s odd that your cooling fan plug did that, they actually updated that plug & small harness for the ‘06 redesign.
@@CarswithNash well my connector was fried and I was out In the middle of nowhere, keep on cruising
I had one for 2 years great car,,,,love it.
martin lote I just bought another on Sunday, a turbo convertible, we’ve got 6 in the family now.
I own three of them through the years and they were the best cars I've ever owned I really miss it I wish I could buy one today
I have a rare 2004 str4 pt cruiser with less then 100k miles turbo 2.4L and i love it ...
Cali Mike Yup, I’m driving an ‘05 turbo convertible currently and I’m really enjoying it.
If it'll get me from point a to b, hell, I'll buy a PT
nissan2829 In my experience they will do that and then some! (the bonus is all the haters have made them very affordable!)
I have two of those, and am yet to have any problems.
rationalguy Agreed! I hear nothing but good about Volt’s, I didn’t realize they were affordable, certainly they are cheap to run.
Roach Larry That’s great! Thanks for the feedback, that’s the same sorta experience as I have with them. You’ll enjoy that turbo for sure!(-:
Lots of room real people, Can easy carry 2 X 4, does not look boring quick motor, I recall when the muscle Cobra has 88 hp, great headlights, prices now going up.
Thank you for the video. I’m looking to buy a second car and the pt cruiser will be it!
Kandake’s Korner Happy to hear!(-:
My mom also has a 2006, it’s a 5 speed none turbo.
i love my 2004 PT just got a new Pioneer Android radio put in 😎😎
Too old to hear the hate. There are so many out there now. Good deals 2019 can be found. Lots of parts.
Leigh Rich Very true, I agree!
I have had a PT Cruiser for years and it has been reliable to me. In its defence, it's a good car - style and all!
Me to my wife has a 2009 PT Cruiser good running car long as you maintain them
Most people hate them because they are a Chrysler product which might be cheap for you to work on... but require more work than most cars ever need in a lifetime.
Not sure what you mean by your last comment, I see a wide mix of people driving PT’s, they are often favoured by older people or people with mobility issues since they are very easy to get in and out of.
i love them i have one and i love it..
D Fish56 Great to hear, thanks for commenting.
I had a 2010 HHR, with 222,000 miles, I liked it and it was a good car
I have a pt cruiser I bought from the original owner she pre order hers and she was one the first ones to own one in Cali back then people where surprise when they saw that car for the first time they ask her what type of car it was and where did she get it
Gustavo Uribe Very cool! Yes I remember them coming out, I remember that ad where one came off a hot wheel’s track and the guy goes “this is my hot rod!” I loved them even back then, always thought they were cool.
We have one
I wouldn’t say I hate it
But it uses oil I think its the oil going up the pcv line
Going to raise the line hoping that will help
Not many here in Australia and not many know how to work on them
Had the time belt done by a “PT Expert” it wasn’t cheap
Michael Harrison If it’s a turbo model it’s normal to blow some oil out the PCV hose, a catch can is a nice mod to prevent your air box from always getting oily. If it’s the none turbo 2.4 then they typically do use some oil, even from new most did, it typically won’t increase with time and isn’t actually any sort of issue, just keep it topped off and it’ll be fine. I will have a lot more PT repair videos coming up that you may find helpful to keeping yours tip top, so stay tuned.
Matt's Garage thanks heaps
It’s an early one 2001 2.0 litre manual with 260,000 kms
It’s always used oil since we’ve had it (4 plus years)
Looking forward to more videos
Cheers
802 Garage I just sub’ed to “Rust Belt Garage”, thanks, I will check out his content.
Would it be hard to change a 2004 GT Turbo with a manual transmission to an automatic?
Like your video and I love the design of the PT. Wish I had one. But daddy won't buy me one. He said at 64 years old it's time I buy my own car.
LOL! The good news is they are pretty affordable.👌
People hate it when it breaks down when they neglect the car....and I do mean that how it's written there oh my dad's pt has around 265k if I remember that right
Sounds accurate!
I think there alright there different styleing makes people hate
M&R Tuning Their styling is what I really love about them, but then I like to stand out in a crowd.(-;
Awesome Video man!
Spachs Garage Thank you & thanks for the sub! Been meaning to check out your recent uploads, just been busy the last couple days.
So much better than a rust bucket Chevy Truck...with kiddy LED's on them
Stan M That’s a random comparison... However I do agree!
My first car here in US a 2005 PT CRUISER nice car but very low resale value
