  • Steve Miller's FLY LIKE AN EAGLE is-all around-such a rich sounding (warm, buttery analog) recording, and to have the DRUMS ONLY is a gift from the heavens. The track features great GARY MALLABER behind the drums. A very sincere thanks to CHRIS (Cericd) for sending it to me. Again this is the actual drum take/comp used on the Steve Miller Fly Like An Eagle mix that you've always heard.
You can hear the human-ness ("defects") of this take so obviously-it's not nearly as noticeable when you hear the mixed track-but it shows the 99.9999 percent of perfect that you don't get with machines.
Please hit the SUBSCRIBE button to the right! Thank you very much!

I passed this video along to Gary. He thanks you for posting it. He also asked me to mention that the reason for the tempo inconsistencies is due to a mic falling off its stand. The immensely groovy finished track is a composite of two takes.

Tell him some random drummer on the internet said that this groove is unquestionably in the same league as the greatest grooves of all-time, from Stubblefield, Jabo, Purdie.

That song is so groovy shifty funky, and now hearing the drums just rolling away with so many little articulations it makes even more sense why. Such a deep groove and the hats just slap so hard. Also guy has a nice way of talking love the energy

I've always loved the ride parts on this song and just how low key funky the whole thing is. Also love your enthusiasm while listening to it. You're constantly wanting to hit the pause button and comment on something, but then you're like "wait, now listen to THIS awesome part" all the way up to the end. Thanks for sharing.

I wish you had talked more about what he is actually playing. That Purdie shuffle is very difficult to play. He absolutely nailed it. That groove makes the song. Malaber is a hit maker.

I was only peripherally aware of Mallaber until this, so I searched a bit. I had no idea he was the drummer on some of Van Morrison's seminal work. "Into the Mystic" is a completely different kind of groove, and he just plays beautifully! Mallaber is a musician's drummer.

Stubblefield meets Zigaboo meets Garibaldi meets Gadd!! This is absolutely fantastic. Thanks for sharing this, I never realized how New Orleansy this groove is...Mallaber freaks me out, Moon Dance, Two Tix to Paradise, Baby Hold on To Me, Springsteen albums. He is the soundtrack of our youth. I wonder if GM hung out in San Fran with Garibaldi during the Van years, the influence is def there. NICE HAIR, you crack me up!! Thanks!!!!

I met Gary, last Fall, when he was out with AJ Croce. I'm watching him and thinking, "I do that. Hmmm, I do a fill like that one, and another and another. I'm hearing ALL these riffs that sound so familiar.
Then, when talking with him, he gave me a very brief background.
The guy's done SO much work with so many people, Cher, Eddie Money... and on and on.
He's, probably, the most unsung session guy. Hal Blaine gets a ton of credit, in the industry. Gary would be a close second.
www.garymallaber.com Some of his links need work but, off the discography page, there's a link to a pdf of his credits.
Oh..., this September, our band gets to open for AJ Croce, for our local street dance. Gary will be using one of my kits. His choice of which one.
