Nene's reaction to silverfish in Minecraft is surprisingly similar to my reaction to them in real life. That includes the part where I use dirt to block my entrances and prod them using a wooden sword.
I have never seen anyone have such issues with silverfish before other then by the end portal, Mojang musta made them a lot easier to come by in the caves and cliffs update.
Nene reaction is just epic. Well, Silverfish are really annoying, they don't give much exp and no drop, come in swarm if you hit one, totally nuisance.

The silverfish intimidation tactic worked out quite well, Nene could have taken them on but she couldn't keep her calm and turned tail instead.

The only way they never spawn out of blocks is if you use Silk Touch.

I always keep a lava bucket specifically for these little pests.
Flare shown the effective way to get rid of those with just Flint & Steel.
