      Sneaky strong and super athletic. Super driven, but prefers to do while being motivated by talking light (some of the hardest workers I ever met always had kind of a happy casual seeming outlook like he does. Keep in mind that the sport has changed in the past couple years. Strongmen now need to be more athletic and well-rounded to do well in the events they focus more on nowadays like the carry for max distance. The events in strongman nowadays favor the smaller and more athletic. Former champions like Brian Shaw and Big Z trained their bodies to carry insanely heavy weight (even for strongmen) shorter distances or doing much heavier static lifts. Examples for this include the super yolk, max deadlift, or heavier truck pulls. Since they’ve been moving away from some of those events and are now focusing on events that require more cardio and endurance. Strongmen from the previous generation like Brian Shaw now have to make big changes to their workouts and diets to help their bodies adapt to this while younger “smaller” strongmen like Martins Licis and Mateusz Kieliszkowski are in their own element. I think Martins is an amazing athlete and great guy overall, but if this were 10 or even 5 years ago, he would be out of his depth. There’s a reason why past WSM champions were so massive at the height of their careers. It’s just what the sport demanded of them, and whether we like it or not, the sport has changed. Now guys like Martins are setting the standard for what it takes to win WSM.

    of course mass has disadvantages but as u said "the base" and the ability to lean more weight into something is a huge advantage as well. so it really is a matter of the choses diciplins.

  • @AZ6023

    I know Martins said fat in the beginning but throughout the video he is talking about weight. Throughout the video he says "smaller" "lighter" and "heavier" "bigger" instead of "fatter" or "leaner" and I'm referencing this because when he won WSM in 2019 he weighed 355, which was he stated was pretty much his heaviest. As he said, you don't need to be the biggest, but you also can't be the smallest; that's why he went from 270 to the 330 he is right now. Hope to see more greatness from Martins!

    I think I a competition like WSM , generally you need to be able to compete in the moving and static events. Mariusz was a prime example of this and it’s why he has 5 titles.
    Arnold’s is more about static strength , so that’s where the “fatties” come in to their own

    Good topic... especially for those who might be getting started in Strongman. Folks see the best and figure they have no chance if they aren't giants like Shaw, Thor, Tom Stoltman, etc. Not only huge but athletic.
    My question would be, did pro strongmen like Martins make gaining size a specific part of their regimen or just let it come naturally with their weight training and strength? You hear and see videos from the giants saying how eating is a job in and of itself and how tedious it can be. Is it possible to compete at the entry level without that aspect?

    Martins is the new generation. WSM has changed slowly to become as much focused on cardio and movement as static strength. Martins is the absolute best at balancing both. He is not the strongest static but he is top 5 at least. As far as movement and cardio, no one can touch him. As a result, he scores more points over the duration of the competition. Look at the Arnold, not as much space for big relays or movement, no big timed distance events, so guys like Thor run away with those, but Martins proves he is statically strong so he finished 3rd overall. Now go to WSM where there are medleys, pulls, long yokes... no one can compete with his cardio and endurance.

    For the people saying 120 kgs is massive.. no it's not. I'm 110 kgs and I used to be 130kgs. Hafthor and Brian compete (or did) at around 200 and over kgs. Now that is massive.
    Yes Martins is a huge guy at the moment but compared to some of the strong men he is way more athletic, and was way smaller.

  • @djdoomy
    @djdoomy 4 года назад +1

    I guess Martin doesn’t realize that for the regular folks, all the strongmen are massive, doesn’t matter if they are 130kg or 180kg. For him maybe it matters but that’s not the general perception

    • @djdoomy
      @djdoomy 4 года назад

      Are the bigger you are the smaller the differences become. If you weigh 70kgs then 120kgs is a big difference but mostly because 120 is almost double than your initial weight. But if you already weigh in at 130 kgs and then you get to 180 kgs the difference won’t look so big.

    Fat does not affect strength. Carbs is energy, Protein is the building block of muscle, and fat is energy stored for later when you run out of carbs. It's cheaper to eat the foods with higher fat, but don't associate being fat with being strong. They do NOT go hand in hand.
