Yeah, Franco's lower center-of-gravity definitely helped him in a lot of ways. Unfortunately, he was behind on points at the beginning of the refrigerator run, and he ran too fast to compensate, and that's when he suffered that terrible injury to his left leg.
It's interesting how many of these early World's Strongest Man competitors were either: 1) celebrities already, or 2) would become famous. Franco Columbu, Lou Ferrigno, and Olympian/pro wrestler Ken Patera were all at this event. These days, the World's Strongest Man competitors generally are not known outside of the sport and/or they do not transition into other lucrative areas when they retire from the sport, unlike the guys from the early days.
Not to knock on any of these guys but I think that's due to two things. No one really trained for strongman at this point, so the field was much wider and anyone who could be considered a strong man and had some profile to him was participating and two, pre-Kazmier, well known people measuring their strength against each other brought in the numbers big time at a time when the event needed supporters the most.
Possibly. You also have to consider that the 132-lb. Bruce Lee could hold a barbell loaded with 130 lbs. out in front of him for 20 seconds before dropping it. Pound-for-Pound, no one else has been able to hold that percentage of their body weight out in front of them for that long.
imagine being 5'6 and former 250 lbs, compressed down to 187 lbs bending that 5/8ths inch/2 foot long rebar like a piece of rubber. i'd give Lou Ferrigno a run for the money. while holdeing both ends of the rebar in one hand as i flex my type of pure strength
Ken Patera said he hated bleaching his hair. He had to do it for his pro wrestling character. After he was released from prison, he no longer had to have the blonde hair, and he went from playing a heel to a baby face.
I might be trippin, But it sounds looks like they had a voice actor(s) making grunting noises and did a voice over to make it look better for tv? Lol. Maybe not idk it jus seemed to sound the same way as some old westerns and movies I’ve watched lol
if the could use their head and jaw, could they use their ass? I bet even I at 150lb could bend that bar if I could use my ass lol. seriously. you can get the bar under your glutes and just shrug the shoulders and the bar will bend. it would be easier than bending it over your knee
Franco is a fuckn legend dude had numbers that just shit on people who out weighed him by so much
But weight is contributed to height. You can be a lot muscular but be short and significantly weigh less.
@@tikiortaka he was strong. At 84kg he deadlifted 340kg
@@rainkaido8607 I know.

Old is gold.💪🏻
Franco going hardcore with his teeth.
Good ol concurrent activation potentiation...gritting the teeth when doing something very strenuous...
Awesome to see names I've heard from current strongmen!
Franco is pound to pound strongest man in history

Lou such a tank of a man
Would love to see this event to make a comeback
No, it's a bit gimmicky
Ken Patera looked like he was giving birth standing up.
@@turinturambar8622 Its a real show of strength though. The bars could be shorter. But then hardly anyone could bend them.
1:33 the lighting makes it look like Lou is turning green, the man was really meant to be the hulk.
This
Your comment is one of the best I've read on RUclips, lol
Much respect for Ken Patera, an incredibly strong man.
His overhead behind the neck pressing is out of this world.
1:26 Lou Ferrigno looked like the Hulk in this!
Franco has unbelievable power for his size! he is competing with very big guys.
Love 💟 from india jharkhand jamshedpur jugsalai chaprahiya

Lou stepped off the sound strange and showed them boys what he had.
This is what can happen if you give it 110%.
The hulk bent metal... In other news water is wet.. haha 😂
For over 40 years it should be in the description.
1:03 He reminds me a Green monster who smahses everything.

Franco just 2 inches off the Hulk hes the real winner

Back when life-altering injury potential took a back seat to TV ratings.
Maaaan, some of these old events were out there!
I knew lou would own this

Always known as Columbo during his hey day. Then out of nowhere his name changes to Columbu. Mandela affect ?
Yo was that Lou
at least he didn't hurt his knee.
Back of the neck is scary
Lou won it he also won thr car dead lift
Terrible for neck vertebrae
So Lou is stronger than Franco .
Hulk wins
It's funny to realize that back then they were light years away from the current level today's competitors have.
They didn't train professionly for Strongmen yet. And the sport was in its infancy
Ouch my teeth neck and head damnnn
Четкая реклама бодибилдинга. И обман один в поле не воин
Nothing great about him, both him and Arnold where munching the Dianabol (steroid) like they where kids with M&Ms
