    Franco was only 5'2 and well under 200 pounds(I know this because I spent a whole day with him in the early 80's)...he was extremely powerful. More powerful for his size than ANY Strongman today. He could bench press well over double bodyweight and deadlifts well over triple his weight. Brian Shaw(and all the others can't come close). Could you imagine Shaw deadlifting over 1250? Lightweight strongmen today deadlift more than triple their body weight. The strength standard for 175lb men is a 600lb deadlift. The bigger guys are routinely deadlifting over 1000lbs now. Not sure how much they can bench press as that's not an event they compete in. The bigger you are the harder it is to hit a triple bodyweight deadlift since the relationship between body weight and the amount you can lift is not linear.

      @tomlucasrccrawlers9108 2 года назад +10

      @@tomscerbo1588 I was 15 years old. I was 5'5 at the time. Franco was wearing "platform shoes" that gave him another 2 inches in hight. And I was still taller than him by a good inch. Problem is most guys believe everything Joe Weider wrote in all the books and magazines. And I get why Joe did that....he was trying to dismiss the long and stupid rumors that bodybuilding stunted your hight.
      But yes...Franco was barely over 5 foot tall. I also have plenty of photos of Franco standing next to Danny Padilla barefoot on the Olympia stage. They were the same hight.

    One of the best things you can do as a natural lifter is to study the philosophy of Old-School bodybuilders. Old-School bodybuilders were ingenious physique architects. They had a profound knowledge of the principles of proper nutrition, smart supplementation, exercise science and muscle adaptability. If you combine Old-School bodybuilding wisdom with modern, evidence-based science, it's the best, safest, most effective way in achieving a strong, sexy, healthy and aesthetic physique. Vintage Physique by George Kelly is a nice book on this. It includes 3 lean bulking protocols (diet + training + supplements) depending on your training level.

In one event, the strongmen were asked to carry a refrigerator strapped to their backs down a 30 or 40 yard track. Most competitors took small steps with that weight, but when Columbo's turn came, he began to run. Spectators could not believe what they were seeing. If you need 15 minutes to get ready, a whole body armor to wear, 3 people round you to make sure you dont collapse and you end up barely lifting it and then dropping it midway, then you cant lift it.

    this guy is a legend. an absolute legend. sadly a lot of ppl probably never heard of him compared to Arnold. Arnold is most widely known clearly, so it's hard to find Columbo but man, was Franco an absolute beast. He was also Arnold's best friend back in the 70's. Pound for pound, the strongest man in history. This guy literally deadlifts 4x his weight. That's mind boggling. That's like Eddie Hall dead lighting 1600lb! I men he benched 400lb for 5 reps. I honestly bet he could've done more. It's just insane, because he's so short and light compared to others, it just makes no sense but it's the truth. This guy is a machine. Almost like a myth too but we have witnesses. Franco Columbo, RIP.

    Benching more than twice your bodyweight for 5 reps is insane.

    The first deadlift Franco did @ 2:24 wagging his body from side to side looked dangerous, he could have screwed up his back, lucky..

      Replying a year later, I believe he was doing that as a joke -- notice how he smiled & sort of laughed afterwards. All of his other deadlifts (with much heavier weight) went straight up.

    Franco was very strong for his size.
    He lifted almost 4 times his weight in the squat, almost 3 times his weight in the bench press and 4 times and above his weight in the deadlift.
    Obviously heavier powerlifters lift more but stop at 2 times their weight in the bench press and 3 about 3 times their weight in the squat and deadlift.
    I am referring to sets made of a single repetition with increased loads from time to time, like in a competition. In the video Franco does some pyramids and stops at about 6 reps of bench press with 185 kg.
    Unfortunately, a stain in his career is the scandalous Olympia of 1981.
    The fact remains that his lifts were done without using supportive clothing as powerlifters do today, the Deadlifts were done with shoes, and the Bench Press without arching the back and without bringing the barbell too low under the pecs. AN INCREDIBLE ATHLETE.
    Joe Weider always told an extraordinary fact, Franco defended him and his wife, with some friends, from thugs outside a restaurant. Columbu knocked down several thugs before they could escape.
    He was also an extraordinary boxer.

    Barely an arc seen in the bench press! Not even hand gear and belt! I can timeliness what he could've done with today's technology and methods, would've become by far the greatest ever I must say, still is!
