Whats crazy is that Zelda OOT actually didn't support the memory pak, so when you rented it, you had to hope that A) you were getting the same exact cartridge, and B) some other kid out there hadn't erased your save.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron on N64, I rented that game before at Blockbuster Video. Then later, my mom did bought the game for me for my birthday😊. That was the greatest memories.

There's something about the chrome on that robot in Space Station Silicon Valley, Link's sword, the Rogue Squadron medals, metal cap Mario, and so many other games that just defined the N64 graphical style for me. I think super shiny chrome needs to make a modern gaming comeback.

I'm disappointed that nowadays,movies can be still be rented in a sense but I can't seem to rent video games anymore. Only play demos of certain selected video games

You gotta realize something about games back in 1999: that time period was the very threshold of the game industry's shift away from kid stuff and into the young-ish adult market. Consider that the PS1 now had an actual CD player, which really put pressure on upcoming consoles to attract attention from adults. Also consider that the arcades were drying up because we were sick of paying so much for short, single play sessions. The N64 was undeniably fun, but it carried that childish stigma with it for longer than it should have. There was one game that single-handedly broke that conception down and turned the console around by giving it a killer app. This game turned a toy that was for Mario games into a four-player competitive gaming machine that absolutely destroyed even the best arcade experiences to date. Even as late as 1999, _Goldeneye 007_ was STILL probably the toughest title to find at the rental store. The first time I saw _007_ in play was at a friend of friend's house in 1997, and everyone there was glued to it. We were all noobs except for the guy who lived there and his best buddy, who were hunting one another down like savages. The game left a mark like no other since; this was better than _Doom,_ more competitive than _Mortal Kombat,_ and the coolest thing on a screen since _Pulp Fiction._ (Even _Halo_ made a smaller splash when it arrived.) Not proud of this, but I went out and rented a copy of _007_ immediately. Still haven't returned it yet-even though it ended up costing me $170 in fines. Best game purchase ever.

glad to see some recognition for FZero X. People who like FZero always point to GX on the Gamecube But frankly I find X far more approachable. I played it a tonne on the Wii virtual console.
I was a sophomore or junior in high school when the N64 hit shelves and was more all-in playing the PS1 for my primary system, so it's impact wasn't as prevalent in my life as it may be for others. That said, I did one way or another, usually through a friend who had the N64, played the core titles like Mario 64, Zelda: OoT, Goldeneye 64, Bomberman 64, etc. and maybe others here and there. Now Ocarina of Time was a great game. However, and arguably so, nostalgia rules the day for me making Zelda: A Link to the Past as the BEST to capture all elements of a Zelda title in my humble opinion! :)

Space Station Silicon Valley is very unique and fun, but I agree it has some annoying elements in terms of control, besides having a bug that prevents 100% completion. Buck Bumble is a game that took me some time to appreciate, but in the end I was hooked enough to beat it. F-Zero X on the other hand, it was love at first sight, and I fully completed it with ALL racers. I am a big fan of the original on Super Nintendo, but this sequel is a huge improvement, and it's so fun to push the other cars off track
I'm sure people tried to keep their saves on the Ocarina of Time cartridges at rental stores. I did that with Final Fantasy III on the SNES. I would rent it every week and got as far as the opera house before some jerk rented it and saved over every save slot with a save at the first save point.
@@danbauer3669 I didn’t own ogre battle. But blast corps was one of my first games and I never found such a functionality. The only game with internal storage that could also save something to the memory card I can think of would be Mario Kart 64 where you where able to save ghost data from a course to bring it over to a friend.
@@G0bus Blast Corps has that function 100%. If you still own a copy you can figure it out. That game was always beat when you rented it and all these years later I now own it and found out that you can put 3 save files on a controller pak vs the one on the cart. Also, holding START when you power on is the way to erase the cart. That's true of, I think, all N64 games...
Weird/funny tmi, I will always remember Buck Bumble on N64 because me and my brothers were playing it, the soccer mini game to be exact, when my parents called us into the kitchen to tell us they were getting divorced. This must have been 1999 or so, an obscure N64 game is burned into my memory because of that 😂😂
Renting was a must for the N64, their game cartridges were so expensive to buy! T_T. This video takes me back and it's nice seeing these games in their original resolution, aspect ratio and frame rate as I remember them. Kudos!
@@charliesmash It's not a matter of opinion. N64 games cost more than Playstation and Saturn games. Most games cost a third more, some cost almost twice as much. They were notoriously "expensive".
Back in the days of Blockbuster I rented Majora's mask and my brother rented ocarina Time and he couldn't even get to the first dungeon, the Deku Tree. All because he didn't realize you have to buy the deck you shield from the store and he kept talking to the wrong guy blocking the way out of the forest rather than the guy blocking the way to the Great deku tree. Interestingly, when they actually started to sell their N64 games permanently, I managed to get a copy where one of the saved files already had the biggoron sword and after that gamepak was eventually lost and I try to get a hold of it in another re-release. The whole having to race to the next NPC fustrated me more than the Water Temple ever could When it came to renting Majora's mask the very least was able to make it to the South area in Majora's mask before my rental was up. I finally got my own copy of Majora's mask in 2005 from eBay, but once it became available on the virtual console in 2009, my reason for keeping an N64 was now gone

in 1998 i bought a rented Sega Saturn with hardcase from Blockbusters for $50 even have the print sheet of how many times it was rented out (2 times only). I got an N64 on dec 25th 99, and have never played a mario or zelda game on it lol
You didn't play Mario or Zelda? I thought the N64 came with Mario. I could be wrong as I got mine in the early summer of '97 when I was like 10, and thought it was bundled, might not of been. I guess they could of also just discontinued the bundle.
1999 was waaay over the end of the life of the N64. All these wacky games like the bee game, or the dog chip games are so obscure. I remember renting the N64 back in the day and playing mortal kombat 4. Graphics looked insanely cool for the time.
That's what I used to have my wife's notification as because she's small (like 4 foot 11) and any time she tried to get someones attention way back then she would always be like "Hey! Hey!"
We're still in "those days." games are still pretty decent, the real issue is adulting. We didn't mind wasting our parents money if a game wasn't super great in the end, and if we wasted our own, most of us didn't have bills. I think a lot of it is just when you're a kid everything is new and awesome and we have a lot of time to waste on a game, even if it sucked a bit. As adults, that time is very limited, so we feel ripped off if the game isn't a masterpiece of excellence.
I still don't know why we can't rent games digitally off of Microsoft, Sony, and Steam. It would be no different than renting a movie. You pay an ammount for a temporary license, enjoy. If you like it, you re-rent it or buy it.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is my all time favorite Legend of Zelda video game. I have only rented from blockbuster only once (in 2000,paperboy 64) after I move to PA it want out of business not long after it was open(2006-2007) I mostly rent video game at a mom and pop store(only Sega genesis game)up until 1997 when they sell off all Sege Genesis games and rent games for 5th generation (best of my memory Sega Saturn )when I was living in Bellmore, NY.
I owned 3 out of the 5. I got rouge squadron for my birthday that year and I LOST MY MIND being a rebel pilot. My brother owned Zelda and f-zero on the 64 so I used to borrow all the time to take to my room when he wasn’t using it
Erin out of all of the games mentioned the one game I remember the most is the legend of Zelda ocarina of time. I remember playing the game with my late father as a teenager. I distinctly remember going to his house after getting the game for Christmas in 1998. we played the game constantly until we beat it and got every item. As for the other games on the list, I didn’t really rent those because I stuck to what I enjoyed which were wrestling games, action, games, fighting games, and stuff like that. I also remember super Mario 64 because that was the packing game for the Nintendo 64. this brings back a lot of great memories. You did a great job as always. Keep up the amazing work. 1:30
Blockbuster game pass, you could choose a game and a movie for a monthly subscription fee. You could keep the games for as long as you wanted and exchanged them for another one when you were done, I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
I don't think I've rented any of these games. I actually never heard of the likes of "Space Station Silicon Valley" and "Buck Bumble", but they do look interesting.
I remember being the first to rent Yoshis Story on N64 from a local video game store. He made she to ask me how it was when I returned with it. Miss going to rent video games. It was such a BIG deal to pick one. You could be stuck with a dull game for a week! Ha

There's a glitch in Space Station Silicon Valley where you couldn't collect all the items. So you could never fully 💯 the game.

1:52 Zelda wouldn’t allow you to transfer the save file to a memorycard. In fact I know no game with internal savestates to allow that.

I used to rent Brawl Brothers, Mario Party, Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Snap, Resident Evil 2, Superman 64 which I only rented once.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is my all time favorite Legend of Zelda video game.
I have only rented from blockbuster only once (in 2000,paperboy 64) after I move to PA it want out of business not long after it was open(2006-2007)
I mostly rent video game at a mom and pop store(only Sega genesis game)up until 1997 when they sell off all Sege Genesis games and rent games for 5th generation (best of my memory Sega Saturn )when I was living in Bellmore, NY.

I owned 3 out of the 5. I got rouge squadron for my birthday that year and I LOST MY MIND being a rebel pilot. My brother owned Zelda and f-zero on the 64 so I used to borrow all the time to take to my room when he wasn’t using it

Erin out of all of the games mentioned the one game I remember the most is the legend of Zelda ocarina of time. I remember playing the game with my late father as a teenager. I distinctly remember going to his house after getting the game for Christmas in 1998. we played the game constantly until we beat it and got every item. As for the other games on the list, I didn’t really rent those because I stuck to what I enjoyed which were wrestling games, action, games, fighting games, and stuff like that. I also remember super Mario 64 because that was the packing game for the Nintendo 64. this brings back a lot of great memories. You did a great job as always. Keep up the amazing work. 1:30
Blockbuster game pass, you could choose a game and a movie for a monthly subscription fee. You could keep the games for as long as you wanted and exchanged them for another one when you were done, I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
I don't think I've rented any of these games. I actually never heard of the likes of "Space Station Silicon Valley" and "Buck Bumble", but they do look interesting.

I myself was a Playstation kid back then. I did love me some Zelda on the N64.
I remember being the first to rent Yoshis Story on N64 from a local video game store. He made she to ask me how it was when I returned with it. Miss going to rent video games. It was such a BIG deal to pick one. You could be stuck with a dull game for a week! Ha
