In the friendlies, like against Iceland, they played this way and everyone said wait until the tournament started. Then, in the group stage, they played the exact same way and everyone said, yes but they got through and just wait to see how they perform in the knock-off games. Well, here we are and I don't think I've seen much change from that game against Iceland. Maybe this team is really built for the counter-attack, not for those teams that would normally park the bus and defend deep. Maybe we'll see a difference when England will play those bigger, more dangerous opponents. Maybe

He must be coaching them to play like this, otherwise it's impossible to understand why he hasn't changed it. I'd drop Trippier play Walker at centre back, Saka at left back, Trent right back & either Gordon or Cole Palmer on the wing. Could we ever one time, just try & win a game by playing attacking football? I'm sick of going through hell praying for a moment of brilliance from an individual player. Could you imagine Klopp or Pep with that squad we'd be out of sight by half-time, all the players are there to blow opposing teams away yet we're waiting on miracles with 30 seconds to go, smh.

The Swiss, i think, will not be so forgiving...The difference between Iceland in 2016 and Slovakia yesterday was that Iceland remained an going threat to the English goal (keeping two up front)...Slovaks tried to run the clock down (the foolish timewasting that came back to haunt them)...

The team of four years ago was built for the counterattack, with Saka drifting up high on the right and Sterling/Rashford drifting high on the left, both ready to attack the wide spaces behind. Except when Walker opportunistically sprints up to support Saka, this team does not play like a counterattacking team. In fact, they prefer to progress the ball straight up the middle, regardless of how slow that is going to be. Unless their wingbacks have pushed high, they effectively avoid progressing the ball up the wings, because Foden and Saka are getting isolated very easily.

What is so frustrating is this team plays like a much worse version of their Euro2020 squad. It is a more defensive counterattacking team that does not know how to counterattack. It is a possession team that keeps trying to progress the ball through the crowded middle. It is a pseudo tiki taka/possession team that lets its wingers get isolated so they either pass the ball backwards or fling in a cross to a double covered forward.
The manager seems like he is satisfied with crossing the ball into a crowd, yet he leaves the best crosser in the world on the bench while behind a goal, and when Trent is actually on the pitch he is encouraged to play in the middle and not wide.
The Euro2020 was a good team with good players. Not above criticism, but there were enough things to like. This team looks like it has a better roster, yet I and everyone else and the players cannot figure out what Southgate is trying to do.

We have neither, he lost us a WC semi final because he doesn't know how to use subs to change a game. We lost the last Euro final because he didn't use his dubs to change the game. We will be knocked out of this tournament because he doesn't know how to change a game with subs. Am I the only person who gets unbelievably frustrated with John Stones? Not just in this tournament, but in previous tournaments also. He is so slow in transition and 98 % of the time you know he will then pass the ball sideways or backwards. I think in previous tournaments, maybe his slow and negative play has been masked because of Englands success. However, if I am the opposition manager, I know that every time John Stones gets the ball, he is very SLOWLY going decide whether to pass it backwards or sideways !!!! And often he does this on multiple occasions during some build ups. . I would love to see some Analysis on how many forward passes he's made in this tournament and previous tournaments and how successful those passes are when he does very occasionally pass the ball forward. My gut tells me , not to successful .
But if I am opposition manager, I look at England. I know that every time John Stones gets the ball that we have got time to man mark, their midfield and mark our attackers. And I think this is putting England on the back foot and doesn't allow us to play free-flowing football.

In fairness to Stones, Southgate seems to want both Stones and Rice to progress the ball straight up the middle. Well, that becomes awfully predictable very quickly, and the opposition just parks 4 players to crowd that area.

The reactions of the players suggest they are more concerned with being criticised than actually playing.

The game is played more quicker from Spain for instance movement both on the ball and off the ball
And i cant see England going any further .
The luck shall turn off guys from now , this once they meet the Swiss
As even the Swiss are playing better as a team than England are , and you may like Simon Jordan think they drew with Scotland but this was Scotland's better group game where they actually had a go at them , as when the Scotland team are turned on they are a good side , and the Scots would hve won v us when we played like such for sure
and how im happy we did not meet the Scots as they turn up v us and i watched their game v the Swiss also ..
And dont forget Scotland won v Spain in their qualifyers and yes the Scots we like to make fun off them but deep down we know they can play , as was them sadly i say as an Englishman who invented football and they are a good side when on fire just did not turn up in the tournament although we have not either lthough they Scots were in the tougher group .
I just dont think we shall win v the Swiss . Bellingham was terrible even though he scored a goal .

You have been obsessed with the idea that different players are played and they have been. Alexander-Arnold is off, as you demanded, Mainoo is playing as you demanded and Palmer has had more opportunity than any other sub, yet the results have not been that much better. In fact, the players you have ignored and Southgate chose without your mention have had more impact than the ones you go on about. Palmer has yet to give an assist or score and contributed to messing up what was going to be the goal of the tournament against Slovenia when Anthony Gordon produced the pass of the tournament to Mainoo, which was followed by an act of delightful skill and pass by Mainoo to Kane. Kane too followed this by a delight pass to Palmer who was out of position, asleep and too late to the ball which he followed by a pathetic shot that might as well have been a pass to the goalie and should have won us that game. If that was Saka playing there instead of Palmer, he would have been in the right position for the pass from Kane and would have been free to run clean on goal or had a free shot and scored. So once again your ideas have proved wrong there, but that the fact is, while the players you demand play have succeeded in nothing, most especially Palmer, to the point that I play a game where when Palmer has the ball I count 10 seconds knowing the ball will be in the hands of the opposition by the end of those ten seconds, other players who have had less time on the pitch have created assists or special unforgettable attacking contributions. Mainoo was never a priority in your discussions of who should play yet he has had a considerable positive impact in his contribution and looks the most consistently high performer in the final third for England with his play not only calm and of quality way beyond his years in tight spaces, but equal in level of control of the ball, passing, temperament, intelligence and quality of delivery you would find in a Man City team or any great Spanish or Italian team and he has achieved this level of ability and maturity at just 19 years of age. For England, he is the big and shocking surprise of this tournament at just how good he is and the world is watching it. I predict his price is going to surge at the end of this tournament with top teams after his signature around the world even if England go no further. Manchester United better watch out. Great stuff. Peace and love
