What nutrients or deficiencies cause twitching?

  • ChrisMorell asks on Twitter: "What vitamins/nutrients would you recommend for muscle twitching (eyes, legs)? Recurring issue since I was 20. Supplementing w/ magnesium g. ~350mg per day, plenty of D, K2, E & A. Did Genova ion panel last year but maybe time for another testing round?"
    and Kori Dunlap asks on RUclips: "I''m low on B2 according to my NutrEval results so I'm just taking double of a B complex. However when you mentioned eye twitching my Sons test came back low B6, so he is taking that from Thorne, but this is going in the 3rd week and now I'm noticing eye twitching. Please advise. Thank you so much for your valued information!!🙏"
    Disclaimer: This is educational in nature. I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice.
    Condensed answer (see video for details): Twitching could involve excitatory or inhibitory amino acids (especially glutamate, glycine, GABA, and maybe acetylcholine), electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, and calcium), acid-base balance (beta-alanine, carnosine, and bicarbonate can be relevant), B vitamins (especially especially thiamin, especially niacin, riboflavin, and pantothenic acid, but also biotin, folate, and B12), and anything that impacts energy metabolism (caffeine, exercise, exertion, stress, hyperthyroid, hypothyroid, diabetes, inborn errors of metabolism, etc).

    This is a great video I am suffering from, twitches all over my body...….muscle weakness and spasms and a bit of Tinnitus and also heart palpitations. This video has helped me understand this horrible condition more and I agree its very rare its something serious like MS or another neurological condition. Heavy metal poisoning can be a good test to have also. I am trying to find answers but some of these tests are very specialised but I am thankful I have private insurance and its been investigated I will update everyone when I find out the cause.

    If you're hypothyroid, then it's perhaps a double whammy because --- according to one viewpoint I have heard, if correct -- not only do you have the shortfall in energy demand-issue with thyroid itself, but you also have a hard time retaining magnesium. I remember Dr. Ray Peat saying that hypothyroid people lose or cannot retain magnesium as well as non-hypothyroid people.

    I just got my amino acid levels done for this exact issue. Glutamate is low end of normal and glutamine was smack in the middle. Test was first thing in the morning. Beta alanine was at the very bottom of normal. Would taking beta alanine for this issue effect already lowish glutamate negatively? Also suffer from strange surges of anxiety since I’ve started twitching for which I thought my glutamate would be through the roof.

    I have had fasiculations in pretty much every muscle in my body at some point in the last 12 weeks, usually it sticks in one place for several minutes, then goes away for awhile, I also have been getting a nerve buzzing feeling in my left leg reasonably often, the twitches seem to be only noticeable when i am at rest. my b6 is tripple the reference range, electrolytes all within reference range. im going to try some beta alanine like you, but im curios if you have any suggestions for pathways i should look into?

    Can drinking water cause twitching if you are deficient in something ? For example, if you drink less water = no twiching, more water incl. coffee (not necessarily excessive amounts) = twiching ? (eyelids, certain muscles like legs, glutes, sometimes hands). What to look for if you have already tried magnesium and potassium to no avail? And what if drinking water causes weird bloating / constipation / water retention on top of that ? (comment left before watching the video)

    • @tigertalks1567
      @tigertalks1567 3 года назад +5

      You could be washing electrolytes out when.you dronk alot of water. Buy some electrolyte water like Core and see if it still does.it. sounds like you may be losing magnesium.

    • @chrismasterjohn
      @chrismasterjohn  3 года назад +2

      Yes. Too much water could cause loss of almost everything discussed in this video.

    • @stevoblevo
      @stevoblevo 3 года назад

      man, if drinking water causes all of that, you need to get your minerals (electrolytes) in order.
      You restrict Sodium? don't. get a good salt.
      I would drink enough water to get to the edge of twitching and all you mentioned so the symptoms start popping up mildly and then go thru his checklist. It may be as simple as eating a real salt, getting that sodium along with other trace minerals.
      re-watch the video and pay attention to the chloride part. chloride alone might solve your problem. it's in salt, ;)

      @@stevoblevo what i can say is that i was over consuming sodium (salt) in combination of excessive water intake for a period of time. Eating more salt or drinking more water caused or exacerbated all the problems i have described in the first comment. At some point i also had weird heart beats (few months), which was possibly an arrhythmia caused by electrolyte imbalance. I had trouble sleeping properly as my own heart was waking me up. Now arrhythmia is gone, but muscle twitching, bloating, constipation and water retention is coming and going, the more salt or water i eat / drink, the worse the symptoms are. It looks like it might be in fact a severe potassium deficiency causing that...

      @@chrismasterjohn i forgot to mention that these symptoms are caused by both, drinking water and eating salt. If i drink more water or eat more salt, then the symptoms get worse and more severe / long lasting (few days). Eating more salt or drinking more water caused or exacerbated all the problems i have described in the first comment. Try drinking electrolyte water every day and get chlorophyll drops for magnesium. This tamed excruciating contractions for me. Also try compression knee highs that you can get at Walmart’s socks section.look in the mens. And if not there, look in the women’s dept. I use New Age-liquid chlorophyll digestive superfood drops from Amazon. I use3 droppers because it only fills up half way plus I take 100 mg of magnesium citrate powder in a pill. If you are hypothyroid you will have trouble keeping magnesium and that’s why you need magnesium. Sorry for your condition.hope you get better. Hope you see this.
