While we don't need to completely shut down our lives or dress how we want to because there are bad players in the world, it's wise to decrease one's odds as much as possible by being smart and careful and remembering that we are responsible for ourselves. We can't necessarily eradicate the risk 100%, though we can always put our safety at the front of our minds. Same goes with drinking and all that stuff. No one deserves to be attacked or knows if and when they will be, but in this day and age I have to wonder about choices people make and all the things they did that increased their odds of being a target.

But if we have sudden uptick of it in a city this large (we can't guard everyone all at once), it's absolutely necessary to warn people about this trend so that they are aware.
The wording of it doesn't go far enough in every direction, but nothing about the warning is in the way of 'it's people's fault for having expensive things'. At worst, it's more of a 'can't have s$!# in this city' .

You can. Just activate lost mode on any of your linked apple devices. So basically the devices are paper weights at that point. Even if they try and resell them, no one else will be able to use them.
