Yeah it was pretty intense to read it in 3 days. I wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I'd savoured it. I think it's better to read it the way that you did. The fact that I took days off of work in order to read it, made me feel pressured to commit hours a day to it 😂
It drives me crazy that every time I think of something bigger on the inside I think of a Tardis 🤣. I've taken off work for concerts, video game releases, etc. I see nothing wrong taking off work for an in depth read of a difficult book. I get tempted by House of Leaves every few years and I wonder if it'll ever intrigue me enough to commit to it.
First time by your channel, enjoyed it. As American Anglophile i always enjoy a good accent, full marks on yours! I just finished Deaths End so done w the trilogy. It's a long slog but wow what an imagination. Tons of interesting concpts covering several centuries of future human history. Have you ever tried any of M R James ghost stories?
Thanks Palmer! I was born and raised in London and then bounced around Europe for half a decade before moving right here in the USA. I live in Atlanta currently. I appreciate your kind words and I'm glad you liked the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy as much as I did. I haven't read any M R James but I'll have to keep an eye out for him next time I'm at the bookstore. My TBR list keeps growing and growing haha.
@PaperbackJourneys it'll be in my hands tommorow via Amazon 👻 also got "horns" I have self imposed a book buying ban on myself until I get a few read under my belt.
I tried to do a buddy read with "The Trial" by Franz Kafka....and I admit....I kind of stopped halfway....I'll try to pick it up later but it wasn't for me! I really agree with you on the "I get what they were trying to do but..." Im slowly building up my reading pace to read more so next book will be Shogun or the three body problem!! Love your videos!!!
Thanks mate. Yeah it's good. A lot of people say it gets better after the first book. I kinda did like the first one anyway but I agree with others that it improves in book 2.
I know you don’t want to be inundated with Stephen King at all times but watching your thoughts around the shining book/movie, the king/kubrick saga and the Stanley hotel I’m looking forward very much to your doctor sleep book/movie opinions. Just gave myself a mini panic attack organizing this small comment on the subject so have fun with that on a much larger scale 😂. ⚒
Haha! Yeah eventually I'd love to have reviewed every Stephen King book, but he writes so fast it's hard to keep up lol. Thanks for the comment mate. By the way, in my next few videos you might notice something new in the background that we both love. ⚒️
I listen to a lot of audiobooks because I do a lot of driving for work, and I've both read and listened to The Shining and Doctor Sleep before but decided to revisit them and I just just finished The Shining audiobook and have started Doctor Sleep. I highly recommend doing them back to back. You catch so many more references that way. Years ago, when I first listened to The Shining, I remember liking it but also saying I liked the movie better. And so many people having The Shining as a top 5 favorite King book. So I really tried to focus on it this time and I will say, after a second listen and reread through, it is a very good book, but if they original film had adapted it perfectly, it wouldn't have done so well. I think they made changes to make it a great film and capture the audience. If it would've been exactly like the book, I think most people would have found it slow and they would've been scratching their heads. Reading about animal shaped shrubbery moving and attacking someone in the snow works well. I think sitting and watching a bush attack someone on the big screen would've had most people laughing instead of being terrified. My own opinion but I do think they're both great in their different ways lol
I think you're exactly right. Especially with the special effects that were available back in those days. It really would have just looked like a bush was bouncing up and down on Jack Nicholson which would have been hilarious and bad. This comment made me laugh. Thanks mate 😂 By the way you're lucky you get to listen to lots of audiobooks. My cousin is a lorry (truck) driver and he listens to about 2 books a week. Very cool job in my opinion.
Oh yeah 3 body problem is really heavy Sci Fi but I enjoyed it. If you're just getting started out in the genre, I might recommend Dark Matter or Project Hail Mary (which is great) Thanks for commenting mate.
What fascinates me about Kafka is the bizarre and otherworldly things that he wrote about at the age that he lived in. No, it wasn't The Trial - The Castle was not finished when he died. Try reading Jorge Luis Borges - he is absolutely amazing!
Great video! I still need to read 20th Century Ghosts. In fact, there is still plenty of Joe Hill I still need to read. I want to read The Metamorphoses soon. Question is, Do you enjoy Lovecraft? That is cosmic horror at its best. I really want to give House Of Leaves a re-read in my autumn years. However, I don't think I have the time commitment. I need to check out The Dark Forest. I will check out your goodreads. Here is the the big question: Would you like to be a guest on my channel? You lucky bastard!!! I cannot even travel out of South Africa, never mind living my dream.! Well... you do have a great voice!
I've only ever read The Call of Cthulu which I didn't love. With that said a few people recommended other books of his in the comments section so I'll definitely try him out again. I know I was so lucky to get to go to The Stanley. It was a dream just to be around the inspiration of The Shining and to know that Stephen King had directed his own version for the screen right there. I'd love to be a guest on your channel mate. That's a very kind offer thank you. Let's set something up. (I just need to work out how to connect my DSLR to my laptop with my mic and stuff.)
Great vid as always. Sorry you didn’t enjoy The Trial more. Not enjoying any book after you’ve invested the time always feels like a waste. I read it many years ago but I enjoyed it a lot more. I actually preferred it to Metamorphosis. I remember I read it around the same time as I read Crime and Punishment and they weirdly complimented each other even though they were totally different. The Shining miniseries is worth a look to see what a faithful adaptation looks like, but it’s vastly inferior to the Kubrick version. If you want to see a really bizarre take on The Shining, the documentary Room 237 is all about people’s really weird interpretations of Kubrick’s film. Like how it’s actually about how Kubrick faked the moon landings, or the displacement of native Americans. It’s exactly as odd as it sounds.
Hey Evan! Thanks for commenting mate. I'll have to check it out and add it to my ever growing TBR list haha. That's one of the great things about having a booktube channel. It's that I get so many great recommendations.
SK is my fave author but in this case I liked the movie better than the book The Shining. And the miniseries with two episodes wasn't that good. The only good thing about it was Steven Weber.
Yeah I love the movie of the shining and I agree with you. It's kind of crazy that, given the popularity of The Shining, that Stephen King decided to make another screen version of it. I feel like he made it just for himself. Thanks for the comment.
Regarding keeping up with comments; that's the burden of celebrity. Once you reach a certain number of subscribers within the thousands, you cannot keep up with the comments. I call it the burden of celebrity as in an actor or singer being unable to interact with all their fans even if they wanted to. I consider myself very lucky if somebody with 10K + subscribers actually answers my comments or leaves a comment in one of my videos. It would be like a celebrity autograph.
Hey mate! Yeah I mean I'm still a relatively small RUclipsr but because I've made about 70 or 80 videos now, some is those older videos still get daily comments so it just adds up haha. Thanks for the comment! Happy reading.
ALL SPOTIFY CODES HAVE BEEN CLAIMED. I hope everyone that got one enjoys the Audiobook.
Reading House of Leaves is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard a person do! 😂 it took me just over 2 months ‼️
Yeah it was pretty intense to read it in 3 days. I wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I'd savoured it. I think it's better to read it the way that you did. The fact that I took days off of work in order to read it, made me feel pressured to commit hours a day to it 😂

Thanks for the add on Goodreads mate.
I just bought This Thing Between US. Can't wait to read it!
Oh yeah. If you enjoy Cosmic horror, then I'm sure you'll like it. I think the writing style is really immersive.

Brava for reading House of Leaves! I got introduced to the book through a favorite song of mine. 😊
Oh cool. Which song?
@@PaperbackJourneys “Haunted” by Poe. I believe the author is her brother!

He sneaks into everyone's TBR eventually haha.
