      I agree with you - I can only recommend getting a cheap 3D printer... you can do that now for the price of a couple of engines!

      @@chunkylover5371 typically the models I want are the more sought after models that are extremely expensive second hand (Bachman 1P) or you can’t find them at all. Even then most second hand I find is old toolings from 20+ years ago

      To me it seems clear that we all need to learn TinkerCAD/Sketchup/etc and just start releasing things on thingiverse or at relatively inexpensive prices for print. The quality won't be the same but we should all aspire to be like Sam - produce our own stuff, and we will only have to fork out for wheels and motors.

      @@chunkylover5371 Yeah thats a good one. I have stashed up enough N scale stuff to make a decent size layout for a few hundred. Just need to stay patient and let the not so good deals pass. I got a few junk items, but most, expecially the Minitrix locos, are amazing.

    I’m finding the constant pressure of ‘missing out’ to spend £200 pre-ordering an unseen loco really frustrating. It’s a business model that suits the manufacturers, but definitely not us. Whatever happened to our trusted retailers having stock you can touch and take your time to enjoy buying? I love my hobby, but I can’t be alone in being someone who now buys a fraction of what they used to.

    • @MrJoeyWheeler
      @MrJoeyWheeler 2 года назад +6

      It's a very strange business strategy that I cannot fathom. There'd be fewer money issues if they produced cheap, sold at a reasonable price, and sold many. It might make less short-term but the goodwill and cared for customer base pays dividends.

    • @lukeslocomotives
      @lukeslocomotives 2 года назад +3

      @clipperrail I am actually buying more now than i was before. 8 locos in 2018, 5 in 2019, 11 in 2020 and 17 last year. The reason I buy more locos now is because I now buy buy secondhand more and new less, all because of the ludocris prices on newer models. And I totally agree - This hobby is based around what suits the manafactures, not us.

    • @modelenginerding6996

      We've been spoiled with cheap manufacturing, materials, energy, and a healthy workforce. Investors aren't going to invest in a production run without knowing there'll be money coming in return. If it's American made, I'm willing to pay (others too ;) ). This is going to get a lot worse this year and for a long time, particularly if conflict breaks out.

    • @thebritfarmer

      Remember when people used to save up for something and when they had the item was still available to buy? Now it seems that we want it yesterday, can't save up and then miss out or end up with huge amounts of consumer debt.

    • @daniel_watkin
      @daniel_watkin 2 года назад

      Agreed. I desperately wanted a Bachmann double Fairlie but could absolutely not justify the almost £300 asking price for a product that was not even released yet. Fast forward a few months and now the price is going up even further. It's like you pre-order or get punished. Okay it's "only" going to be 8 percent, but on such an expensive item that's not negligible.

  • @Abdu11L4hi

    Wow, it's sad knowing that the bigger modelling companies are increasing their prices, at least Bachmann is being a bit more reasonable than Hornby, but it's just sad. It's sure unfortunate - but prices are having to go up - that's just the way the world is. We just have to hope that the companies that matter won't take advantage of this... and most of them (even Bachmann!) seem to be doing the right thing!

      Hornby plc were barely profitable in 2021 and made a significant loss in 2020. I'd suggest right now it's a survival issue for them. There has been loads of consolidation in the market in the last 20 years if you look beyond the UK (Fleischmann, Lima, Jouef, rivarossi and probably many more suggesting the established companies have been finding it tough. The tooling costs alone are enormous, I was shocked when I saw how much they spend on that. The bigger your range the higher the costs are per unit and Hornby have a massive range. Customers want more range that drives business cost through needing more designers, more tooling, smaller volumes for each production run which increases production unit cost etc. The demand for more detail also massively drives cost up. Labour cost of adding fitted parts almost certainly increases production cost massively. Bigger range also means more stock and stock is terrible at hindering your ability to invest more due to the tied up cash. Maybe some of the competition have fewer things to worry about like other brands (airfix, scalextric, Jouef, Lima), smaller ranges etc. I dont know enough about it but I doubt the model railway hobby is a growth segment of the hobby/toy market so everyone is likely fighting for a share of a shrinking pie that usually means going upmarket and increased prices due to ever decreasing volumes. Hopefully they survive the next few years.

    I feel myself graviting towards the likes of Accurascale and Rapido more and more because of the way they operate and take on customer feedback etc. You might have missed it but at the end of the Dapol coach article (just a single line) they are also producing toplight corridor versions with an announcement later this year

    Certainly not defending the scale of Hornby's price increases - but I suppose Bachmann can afford to keep the price rise more modest as their models have been extortionately priced for some time now. I will be sending my modest funds to the likes of Dapol, Oxford Rail and Accurascale for the foreseeable future.

    • @SamsTrains

    The new Hornby Sentinel " Stanton 57 " was operated by Stanton Ironworks near Ilkeston in Derbyshire, not the NCB. I've no idea where Hornby got that idea from. I actually drove the loco from the furnace plant, were it had bought in another load of molten iron, 200 yards down the track and then told the crew that the loco was missing. When I told them I'd shifted it I had to disappear rather rapidly.

    I have already brought the most amazing thing this year and it isn't a model either. I noticed a fellow volunteer brought in a very interesting book which has engineer drawings of locomotives, carriages, wagons, buildings and other railway related items. Might be ideal for future 3D printing inspiration.

    Great news this month Sam, I very much agree with what you're saying about the price increase in models. I feel the big firms rely heavily on China for manufacturing and now with the additional costs of shipping I do wonder if they would have done better keeping manufacturing in this country!!. Its such a shame because I can't see how I can now justify paying these huge prices for new models. They have priced me out of the new market. I'm a older modeller who is in the analogue models and igot back into the hobby to enjoy a shared relationship with my grandchildren. But its all getting just to expensive. Also the way hornby is treating their trusted retailers is dreadful. Anyway thanks for what you do to highlight these difficult times. Enjoy following your adventures. Eddy xx

    I'd noticed the "error" when searching (just out of curiosity as to see how well things are going) for the Titfield Thunderbolt and Lady With A Lamp on the Hornby site.
    The thing is with commercial tie ups, it's not just the financial side of things. The company who the property belongs want to be sure that the product that bears their brand is of a certain quality. They don't want something that looks or runs like a bag of nails bearing their brand or name, as people could associate the poor quality with them and not necessarily the manufacturer. After all, as a manufacturer, what you produce represents the rights holders brand.
    Maybe they'll release it as the inspired by Simon Kohler range and call it
    The Boltfield Thundertit.

    I think the problem that Hornby might be facing is one of identity, it has the potential economies of scale but that is is disipated by gravitating toward both higher fidelity and a plethora of short run products where the fixed costs of the business crush profitability, it's like Nellie the Elephant trying to be the Sugarplum Fairy, there is room for both mass market and high fidelity products but modellers too can't expect ever increasing"content" without that impacting on price.

    Hi Sam great round up as always, very interesting with Hornby. I must be so out of date, I remember saving up to by vans like 'fine fish' 'prime pork' from my local toy shop, they were £1.50 no way could I have imagined £30+ for a van. Dapol coaches look very nice, blue ones especially but £50 ????

    Hornby scurrying away into the corner and trying to hide the fact that they've jacked up the prices, offended the LGBTQ+ community, and tried to hide a slight copyright infringement by saying "inspired by" great video sam, I can't believe hornby have stooped this low, and I like the DBSO coaches, even though the prices are massive, I can't wait to see one of those at an exhibition. Its good that Bachmann are keeping their prices down. I may get an Oxford N7 and maybe a Oxford GWR mystery box seeing as I've purchased an Severn Valley Railway exclusive accurascale GWR Manor.

    I've pre-ordered the Bachmann Class 47 47712 BR ScotRail 'Lady Dina Spencer' with Sound as it is in current day tooling or running @£288 but that's where the price lunacy ends for me for sound loco's, I refuse to pay more than £290 and will stick to that no matter how much I want it.
    Just on Accurascale, personally I've spent £7k on them since they entered the UK market on current day models and less than £1k on Hornby & Bachmann combined, funny enough Dapol come in at 2nd @£5k because they know how to churn out current day models at realistic prices.

    I pre-ordered the Rapido DCC sound fitted FP9A way back in December 2020. Pre-order price £249.00. It was released in October 2021.
    Guess what the price in the shops is today? £249.00. A shocking ZERO% price increase! You read that right. The price hasn't increased by a single penny.
    That must be because they're shipped from China via Canada instead of being shipped directly from China to the UK.
    I see the Dapol coaches have kinematic couplings too.

  • @musketthedog
    @musketthedog 2 года назад

    Interesting to see Bachmann addressing the price increases directly. I don't know about material costs specifically (we've been expecting an increase of around 25% on all the raw materials my industry purchases) but shipping at the moment is an absolute killer. It used to cost £3000 - £5000 to get a container from the far east to Europe. In the last year or so, that's been averaging around £18,000 per container, peaking at £25,000. None of the model railway companies are huge in business terms. It will be interesting to see how long they can shoulder some more of that burden.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  2 года назад

      Quite refreshing to have them actually addressed actually! Yes container prices have certainly increased - but if you do the maths and work out the probable shipping cost increase *per loco* , it's not very much at all!

    I recently took sole ownership of mine and my Dad's huge OO collection after his death; I've always wanted to return to the hobby and wondered if now might be the time. After seeing the absolutely ridiculous prices Hornby are trying to charge, I've decided that there's no chance of this happening. They have killed any interest I might have had in buying new items. I would have been willing to spend £1,000 - £2,000 per year but I just can't bring myself to spend a single penny with them when you see what you'd get for your money.

    One thing I don't understand. Heljan's ETHELs are the same price as their 25/3s because the motors and gears aren't expensive. Yet Hornby's dummy HST power car / surrogate DVT is £85, not half the £363 you'd pay rrp of a pair of power cars.

    You need to set up a community search in the local area to try and find your missing pet lion Sam lol. Those deltics are really tempting although I've already got two hornby ones and I like a bit of variety, but I suppose 3 can't hurt. Plus I think they're £130 on rails of Sheffield or at least they were so it can't be too bad. Really stepping up these smaller manufacturers perhaps the big guys should take a leaf out of their book.

    Hornby LBSC 100-s have ever been causing short circuits? I recently got my hand on one, I had to replicate it motor's missing brush arm, anyway it runs nice except from the motor taking 400 milAmps (and the loko runs way too fast for it kin) and some positons the wheels cause the train short out somehow (I don't know how).
