You need a shade to direct the light in one direction. We use a big piece of plywood nailed to a 2x4 with enough of the 2x4 sticking out from the top to hang a lantern on and bottom of the 2x4 stuck somewhere at the stern of the boat. It'll light everything up in front of you without blinding you making it easy to pick off fish
